Swim faster! The deep-sea 'doomsday' oarfish has surfaced off San Diego, stoking excitement and a bit of fear. Is it an omen?

In a rare and spine-tingling discovery, a massive oarfish, known as the 'doomsday fish,' was found floating on the ocean surface off the coast of San Diego. Resembling a sea serpent from legends, this deep-sea denizen has been observed in California waters just 20 times since 1901, making its appearances both thrilling and ominous for locals and scientists alike.

Oarfish, which can grow to more than 30 feet long, dwell in the deep ocean and rarely come close to the surface. Given their rarity and imposing presence, they have been mistaken for mythical sea monsters throughout history. The latest sighting was documented by a group of science kayakers and snorkelers from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego, who were patrolling La Jolla Cove.

Ben Frable, a fish expert from the institution, noted that spotting an oarfish is akin to finding a needle in a haystack, adding an element of excitement to the otherwise routine activities of marine observation. What adds even more to the oarfish's mystique is its reputation as a harbinger of doom, often associated with impending natural disasters, such as earthquakes.

Indeed, perhaps adding fuel to the folklore, this oarfish was found just two days before an earthquake struck the region. Although scientists dismiss any actual connection between the appearance of the oarfish and natural calamities, the timing certainly makes for an eerie coincidence.

Apart from their unsettling reputation, oarfish are astonishing creatures. Their bodies are long and ribbon-like, covered in silvery scales, and they possess a striking red dorsal fin that runs the entire length of their bodies. These unique features contribute to their enigmatic and fearsome appearance.

Interestingly, the oarfish's elusive nature has given rise to many myths and legends. Sailors in ancient times believed that seeing an oarfish was a sign of misfortune on the horizon. Despite the advances in marine biology, the creatureโ€™s deep-sea lifestyle means much about it remains a mystery to scientists even today.
