Blue Beetle, starring George Lopez, Susan Sarandon, and Cobra Kai's Xolo Maridueña as the hero, is ready for its summer debut in the DC Films Universe.
In the form of a blue, metal scarab, the device bonds with Jamie, introducing itself as Khaji Da and bestowing him Iron Man-style powers. The second was Ted Kord, a genius inventor and self-made industrialist who styled himself as a wise-cracking superhero out of love for the Justice League and their good deeds. The new trailer covers much of Jaime’s movie origin story — a strange encounter with a piece of alien technology, a close knit family group, and a threatening presence of corporate power.

The Blue Beetle trailer looks fun. The trailer for the Blue Beetle movie has apparently dropped sooner than DC had anticipated. She seems to believe the Scarab belongs to her (perhaps a nod to Victoria’s comics relationship to Ted Kord, a previous Blue Beetle) and will do anything to get it back.

Is Blue Beetle part of the old DCEU, the new DCU, or neither? The Ted Kord Blue Beetle joins the Justice League, paving the way for his iconic partnership with Booster Gold and playing a key role in the DCU up until his death in 2005’s Countdown to Infinite Crisis. Fury of the Gods](/articles/shazam-fury-of-the-gods-director-dcu-overhaul), there's nothing stopping Gunn from working Blue Beetle into his new DCU if that's what Gunn wants. But only now is Blue Beetle appearing in a live-action film. The latter revamped the Blue Beetle mythos by more closely tying Jaime to his predecessor, Ted Kord, and revealing the scarab to be magical in origin rather than extraterrestrial. It’s also worth pointing out that Blue Beetle is the main inspiration for Watchmen’s Nite Owl. In emergencies, Jaime can even activate “infiltrator mode,” which allows the scarab to take control of the suit and dispatch enemies with brutal efficiency. Again, Jaime’s own inexperience is the greatest hindrance to his powers, and early on he struggles to bond with the scarab and realize his true potential. Though DC eventually canceled the Blue Beetle series in 2009, Jaime continued to play a role in books like Teen Titans and Justice League: Generation Lost. While the Blue Beetle character dates all the way back to 1939, Jaime Reyes himself didn’t come along until 2006. Jaime quickly embraces his new role as a teen superhero, with his story continuing in the pages of the monthly Blue Beetle comic. Whether alone or fighting alongside groups like the Teen Titans, Blue Beetle is a powerful force for good, even if his scarab initially has darker motives.

Jaime Reyes is here to bring a new hero to the DC Universe, but his new movie trailer also has some interesting connections to Blue Beetle's comics past.
The trailer ends with a brief look at what appears to be the inside of Jaime’s eventual base of operations—seemingly taken over from somewhere inside Kord Industries, given that we see the costumes of the two prior Blue Beetles in the background for a moment. Early on in Jamie’s story, and seemingly in the movie as well, the Scarab often manifests the suit of its own volition, and it takes Jaime a while to actually control his newfound abilities. Given the shadow Kord Industries casts over this whole trailer, it’s no surprise that we’re seeing a lot of Ted’s time as the Blue Beetle even if Ted himself is not the star of the show in this movie. Inside the Big Belly Burger box is in fact not a Big Belly Burger—but the alien scarab that bonds with Jaime’s spine, transforming him into the Blue Beetle. Jaime is given a mysterious package to safeguard with his life in an innocuous hamburger box—which in and of itself is a DC Comics reference. While in most of its history Ted has directly led Kord Industries himself, most recently in the comics, and in the Blue Beetle movie, it’s managed by his sister, Victoria.
