At its farthest distance from Earth, Artemis II is expected to reach a point more than 230,000 miles (370,000 km) away. He will be the first Black astronaut ever to be sent on a lunar mission. Hansen, an astronaut from the Canadian Space Agency, is a spaceflight rookie. Further crewed missions would follow about once a year. This is humanity's crew," NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said on stage. She will be joined by Victor Glover, 46, a U.S.

NASA announces crew for Artemis 2 mission (SpaceNews)

NASA announced April 3 the three Americans and one Canadian who will be on the crew of the Artemis 2 mission in late 2024.

“He talked about how important this is for all of humanity,” Glover said of that call. Artemis 2 is a precursor to Artemis 3, which will attempt the first crewed landing on the Moon since Apollo 17. Glover said that he doesn’t mind that, by going on Artemis 2, he will miss out on an opportunity to walk on the moon on Artemis 3. “The chance to fly on this is amazing,” he said. Jim Free, NASA associate administrator for exploration systems development, said NASA is still going through the lessons learned from the Artemis 1 mission, but felt confident enough in the outcome of that mission to name the Artemis 2 crew and have them start training. The acceptance of risk on Artemis 2 will be different from Artemis 1 because of the presence of that four-person crew. The three “driving principles” for Artemis 2, he said, is crew safety and survival, vehicle survival and mission success. Once the tests are complete, the Orion will fire its main engine to place the spacecraft on a free return trajectory around the moon. Artemis 2 is currently scheduled to launch no earlier than November 2024 on the second flight of the Space Launch System. The spacecraft will also perform a proximity operations or “prox ops” demonstration by maneuvering in the vicinity of the SLS’s Interim Cryogenic Propulsion Stage. “The mission to the moon will launch four pioneers, but it will carry more than astronauts,” NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said at the event, just before introducing the crew. Glover flew on the Crew-1 commercial crew mission to the ISS in late 2020 for a six-month mission.

[Artemis 3](https://www.nasa.gov/feature/artemis-iii), which will aim to land astronauts on the moon for the first time since 1972, likely won’t launch before 2026, according to CNN. The astronauts will make sure Orion’s systems function as they are supposed to with people aboard in deep space. As with Artemis 1 in November, the Orion spacecraft will launch from NASA’s Space Launch System rocket—but this time, it’ll be carrying humans. This is in part because Artemis 2 needs to test new technology that has never been used during spaceflight, according to They represent exactly what an astronaut corps should be: a mix of highly capable and accomplished individuals with the skills and determination to take on any trial as a team.” Hansen will be a rookie space traveler. The space agency deemed that mission a success and is still working to review all the data collected. The Artemis III mission is expected to take off later this decade. “And accidentally two of us were very late to that meeting.” It will also mark the first time humans have touched down on the moon since the Apollo program ended in 1972. When he was selected for the NASA astronaut corps in 2013, he was working in the US Senate as a legislative fellow. Hansen, 47, is a fighter pilot who was selected by the Canadian Space Agency for astronaut training in 2009. If all goes to plan, Artemis II will take off around November 2024. “It’s so much more than the four names that have been announced,” Glover said during the Monday announcement at NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston. A native of Baltimore, Maryland, he’s completed one prior spaceflight, a 165-day trip to the International Space Station that had launched aboard a Russian Soyuz rocket in 2014. Most recently, Wiseman served as chief of the astronaut office before stepping down in November 2022, making him eligible for a flight assignment.
