At least nine possible tornadoes were spotted across Iowa Friday as storms with hail and heavy winds battered the eastern portion of the state.

Here's a list of the possible sightings: Johnson County Emergency Management Coordinator Dave Wilson said there may have been up to three tornadoes that hit the county.

Warnings for tornadoes and severe thunderstorms persisted across southeast Iowa through the rest of the afternoon and the evening Friday. According to the Iowa Department of Transportation, portions of highways 92 and 78 are closed due to debris on the roadway. Large damaging tornadoes were confirmed on the ground near Sigourney, West Chester, and Kinross, with multi vortex tornadoes seen near Keota and Wellman.

Officials said they believe the maximum estimated winds for the tornado were 170 mph, with a maximum width of around 600 yards. That scale goes from EF-0 at its weakest to EF-5 at its strongest. The National Weather Service in the Quad Cities gave the tornado that tracked from Wapello County into parts of Johnson County a preliminary rating of EF-4 on the Enhanced Fujita scale.

Cleanup continues near Wellman after tornado touches down (KCRG)

At least three homes were severely damaged just west of town, no serious injuries have been reported.

Utility crews also worked during the day Saturday to restore power and replace power lines damaged during the tornado. The damage forced several local roads to close while crews worked to clear debris. The tornado caused damage to several buildings in the Wellman-area late Friday afternoon during a severe weather outbreak that produced at least one tornado that moved through Washington County.
