Teri was accused at times of exploiting her own daughter, although Brooke found it hard to blame Teri. ” Brooke said of Teri at the The Suddenly Susan star even staged an intervention at age 13 for Teri, but the stint of sobriety was short-lived, per the outlet. I thought she was God, I thought she could change the weather. “It’s so innate when you’re an only child of a single mother,” Brooke told And by virtue of protecting her, I was justifying everything, and that solidified that bond between us.” Born August 1, 1933 in New Jersey, Teri Schmon would marry Francis Shields in 1964 and divorce only a few months later, when Brooke was only five months old. “The love was so intense,” she continued. In A New Documentary, Brooke Shields Reckons With A Lifetime Of ... (British Vogue)

This is a story about all women.” We understand the argument she is making – about society’s penchant for both objectifying young girls and condemning their sexualization – but I ask Shields if there’s a feeling of her personal narrative being hijacked to fit a wider cultural one, both in this film and in the uproar that surrounded the original Pretty Baby. Shields began modelling at 11 months old, appearing in a Francesco Scavullo-shot Dove soap ad, and until now, neither she nor her manager-mother, Teri, had looked back. Across from us, oil portraits of Shields’s daughters as little girls by the artist Will Cotton frame the marble fireplace. Shields is dressed casually, in wide-leg track pants and a cropped white sweatshirt. “Okay, no, that’s weird, Mom,” she says, her hands up in protest. Rowan asks her mother if she appears naked in the film.

How Brooke Shields' Documentary Became More Than Her 'I Was ... (Jezebel)

Director Lana Wilson talks to Jezebel about carefully capturing the icon and incorporating her feedback in Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields on Hulu.

She had one suggestion of an addition that actually she had said in the original interview, which was: “I was so trusting.” And I thought that was great and really important to add, because I also think it’s something that a lot of people connect to. That had to all feel completely comfortable to her, and it had to be something to which she was like, “Yes, this completely reflects my experience. I’m more comfortable,” and everyone was like, “Great!” I thought it was perfect. And I really tried to think about it as an experience I’m giving someone and they have to be okay at the end of it, as well as thinking of what I want and need to make this documentary. So I often don’t get to the harder stuff until the afternoon and then kind of bring it back to something that is more of an ending or more, “Well, what is the takeaway here?” I do try to do everything carefully. This is my experience and truth, and this is how it was for me.” I think that’s really rare. She’s really processed a lot of this stuff and was ready to talk. There’s the context of 1970s Hollywood cinema, and then there’s Brooke’s personal experience, and then there’s what we think looking at it now. Is it perpetuating that or is it critiquing it or is it ambiguous? JEZEBEL: I found the Pretty Baby section of your doc particularly fascinating, because you manage to contextualize the film in terms of both the Wild West nature of ‘70s cinema and the considerable controversy it riled up when it was released. She also went into the experience of interviewing Shields and her own vision for the film. Meanwhile, as she says in the doc, “The irony was, I wasn’t in touch with any of my own sexuality.”

'Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields' Review: Hulu's Timely Documentary (Hollywood Reporter)

Hulu's two-part documentary 'Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields' looks at Shields' career from '80s stardom to finding her voice and her agency.

The best scene in the documentary, by a wide margin, is a dinner in which Shields and her daughters try to make sense of what was progressive and what was regressive about her early career; it’s funny, relaxed and still welcomely analytical. It isn’t just that Shields is protective of her image and her mother’s image (she’s less so, later, when talking about her mother’s alcoholism); she simply isn’t interested in being scathing or dishy or in playing the role of advocate. The entertainment/cultural side of things is well-covered by the likes of Buzzfeed scribe Scaachi Koul and podcaster/film historian Karina Longworth. As Wilson, Shields and the doc’s talking heads quickly acknowledge, it wasn’t like pockets of society weren’t disturbed and maybe even grossed out by the idea of Shields as a pre-teen prostitute or the centerpiece of a series of sexually suggestive Calvin Klein ads. Shields presents herself here as a woman who has made it through to the other side, which will doubtlessly be reassuring for some viewers. The personal side of Shields’ life is well-documented by an assortment of friends and contemporaries, including Laura Linney, Ali Wentworth and Drew Barrymore. The two-part documentary — 136 minutes in total, but surely better suited to have been edited into a 120-minute feature — uses Shields’ alternately unsettling and inspiring journey as a vehicle to critique one of Hollywood’s ickier undercurrents and ask questions about whether or not anything has changed in the past 40+ years. Shields, though, was delivered into the monoculture as The Most Beautiful Girl in the World, an Ivory Soap Baby who became a commercial sensation; then, in a way that presumably couldn’t exactly be reproduced today, she became a movie star in a series of vehicles dedicated, with wildly varying levels of artistry and prurience, to showcasing her sexuality, even if Pretty Baby, The Blue Lagoon and Endless Love were all made before she turned 18. Pretty Baby has issues with structure and focus, as well as a featured subject who isn’t always angry about the same things its storyteller is worked up about. Then, of course, Shields grew up and became a high-profile celebrity virgin, a sitcom star, went to public war with Tom Cruise and much more. The patriarchy is in for a shock! In the case of The Power, that agency arrives not in the form of legislation or a Supreme Court verdict, but as an evolutionary ability to generate and wield electricity.

I really want to find the right (one) because “Suddenly Susan” to me was such a revelation and it was the happiest time for me. And I want to feel that whole thing again because it was a very healthy, pure place for me to be. Before COVID I was healthy and I was working out a lot and I felt good. SHIELDS: I was worried about the #MeToo stuff just because I didn’t want it to be reduced to just a headline. SHIELDS: I decided at an early age that if I was going to speak about anything, it was going to be about things that I believe that could help other people. You have to own how hard it is just to get to this age, and with your wits about you, and good people in your life and how much more there is. And I just hoped that out of two hours and however many minutes, the one brief story — I mean, I knew it’s going to be clickbait — but I was worried that I would get let down again by the press. You know, you really do learn to compartmentalize. Now, I don’t ever feel like I’m on the defensive because I’ve learned that I’m not at anybody else’s mercy. I’ve maintained a career and kept challenging myself, and I don’t think I ever felt confident enough to say it out loud. SHIELDS: I made myself small for so long, either to be relatable or to not be threatening or humbled, you know? Don’t be a snob.
