Light the Beam: how the historically awful Kings became the NBA's ... (The Guardian)

Sacramento last made the playoffs nearly 20 years ago. But a talented coach and an impressive blend of talent has transformed their fortunes.

Would it still be a shock if the Kings win the championship this year? The Sabonis-Fox pairing is scintillating, but basketball is a team sport, and the Kings have proved they possess a sneaky good supporting cast too. The front office took a lot of flak for passing on Purdue’s Jaden Ivey in favor of Iowa’s Keegan Murray in last year’s draft, and while the long-term results have yet to be borne out, Murray has been anything but a bust. Capitalizing on this, and in one of the greatest strokes of marketing genius in recent sports history, the Kings began sending out an enormous purple beam of light from the top of their arena after every win, and the Light the Beam campaign was born. As a result, Vegas currently has Brown as the But this was one of the even rarer occurrences when the momentous trade not only worked out for the Kings, but seemed to be a win-win for both sides. And the Kings faced a fair amount of pushback when they sent their stellar young point guard Tyrese Haliburton to the Indiana Pacers for big man Domantas Sabonis. Brown, who has been in the NBA coaching ranks since the 1990s, earned many of his offensive stripes on Steve Kerr’s staff in the Bay with the Golden State Warriors (a team who are no stranger to record-setting offensive prowess themselves). [Fox has said](https://www.nbcsports.com/bayarea/kings/domantas-sabonis-deaaron-fox-share-selfless-bond-kings-big-man-explains) that Sabonis is the best screen setter he’s ever played with. Yes, even better than the “we’ve never seen anything like this before” offense of the Kyrie Irving, James Harden and Kevin Durant Nets (118.3). Those franchises who lead a sisyphean existence, one in which they are always the butt of the joke. While pundits generally approved of their off-season moves this past summer, few would have predicted Sacramento would be third in the Western Conference at the end of March.

The Sixteen-Year-Long Nightmare for Sacramento Kings Fans Is Over (BroBible)

The Sacramento Kings are returning to the playoffs, as the team will make its first appearance after a sixteen-season long drought.

In other words, the team won the lottery a remarkable four out of seven times they were in it. Compare that to the Cleveland Cavaliers, who won the lottery four times in an 11-year span from 2003-2014, despite making the playoffs five times in that span. The last Kings team to make the playoffs was in 2005-2006, where they lost in the first round. They clinched their spot with a 120-80 win over the Portland Trail Blazers. The franchise has made mistake after mistake in the last sixteen years, and had missed the playoffs in all of those seasons. They never won the lottery a single time, and only picked in the top 3 once.

The Grizzlies had won seven in a row and 12 straight at home. The Knicks overcame the loss of Julius Randle to a sprained left ankle to win their second straight and remained firmly in fifth place in the Eastern Conference. Holiday had 18 points in the third quarter, when the Bucks scored a season-high 46 points to build a 12-point lead. Ja Morant led the Grizzlies with 36 points and nine assists. But San Antonio (19-57) lost its fifth straight in its worst season since 1997, the year it drafted Tim Duncan with the No. James also had seven rebounds and four assists in 31 minutes in his second game back after he was sidelined for a month because of a torn tendon in his right foot. Embiid hit a 3-pointer to tie it at 103 and followed with a 16-footer the next time down for what ended up the winning basket. Fighting for playoff positioning in the Western Conference, Los Angeles (38-38) kicked off a five-game trip with its fourth win in five games overall. Westbrook made five 3-pointers without a miss and had 10 assists. Fox finished with 18 points in the victory, which also gave the Kings a home-court advantage. Antetokounmpo added 17 rebounds and 12 assists to help the Bucks improve to 55-21. Rookie Andrew Nembhard had 15 points and 15 rebounds.

With the Sacramento Kings clinching their first playoff berth since 2006, the Jets now have the longest active playoff drought in sports.

If they miss the playoffs — Buffalo is five points out of a playoff spot as of March 30 — they will extend their postseason drought to 12 seasons as well, having not made the playoffs since the 2010-2011 season. Now, with the likes of De’Aaron Fox and Domantis Sabonis, the Kings will return to the postseason after 16 years away. The Jets are now No.

Sacramento Kings' playoff clinch gives NY Jets dubious record (Jets X-Factor)

The New York Jets now own one of the most dubious marks in modern American sports but at least there's potential company.

The NHL’s Buffalo Sabres are trapped in an 11-season drought of their own and that streak could continue if the current playoff picture holds. Even if the Rodgers deal somehow completely collapses, the Jets have enough young, promising talent to remain optimistic. Thus ends the longest active playoff drought among the so-called “big four” professional North American sports leagues, almost five months to the day they inherited it from MLB’s Seattle Mariners (20).

But he has also allowed the players to have their say in the soul of the team. In January, when the team was in Oklahoma City, Brown called to his hotel room his leadership group: Fox, Sabonis, Barnes, and Mitchell. Kobe (Bryant) used to tell me all the time: ‘You have to be connected.’ And in order to be connected, the soul of the group had to be right.’’ One is in the training room on the second floor of the team’s training center. Sacramento Kings Clinch First Playoff Berth Since 2006 (Casino.Org News)

Sacramento Kings clinched a postseason berth and return to the NBA playoffs for the first time since 2006 and end a 16-season drought.

The Royals relocated to Cincinnati in 1957 before the team was rebranded as the Kings when they moved again in 1972. The Kings were the 1951 NBA champions when they were located in upstate New York and known as the Rochester Royals. Between 1999 and 2006, the Kings were a mainstay in the postseason with eight-straight playoff appearances. The Kings are +2000 odds to win the Western Conference and advance to the NBA Finals. Their exit in 2006 marked the end of the franchise’s most successful run since they moved from Kansas City to Sacramento in 1985. When the regular season began, the Kings were a long shot to win the Pacific Division at +40000 odds. They finished in last place in the Pacific Division seven times since the 2001-02 season. They went from worst to first this season after finishing in last place in back-to-back seasons as the proverbial doormat in the Pacific Division. Both oddsmakers and bettors are under the assumption the defending champions will knock out the inexperienced Kings in their first postseason series in 16 years. The Sacramento Kings ended the longest playoff drought in American sports when they clinched a berth to the 2023 NBA playoffs. They’re only two games behind the second-place Grizzlies and still have a chance to snag the #2 seed in the playoffs. At the least, the Kings will have the #3 seed, which is a remarkable feat considering where they were one year ago.
