Buckley: Red Sox have low expectations. They can still play to a ... (The Athletic)

The Red Sox will be more interesting, score more runs, maybe even win more games, if they do their homework.

[Royals](https://theathletic.com/mlb/team/royals/) at-bat, trailing 2-1, [Eric Hosmer](https://theathletic.com/mlb/player/eric-hosmer-7CdkBRGliazHOBWA/) on third, one out, [Salvador Perez](https://theathletic.com/mlb/player/salvador-perez-qDzwBA7ygWyTtwoJ/) hit a slow roller to the left side. Plus, it serves a useful purpose: If we can pick a team to win the pennant that winds up in last place — the ’87 Indians were 61-101 — then there’s nothing we experts can’t get wrong. It’s just that it was a cool cover, and I’ve held onto it over the years. The resources are in place for the Red Sox to play these types of chess games. The ball was gobbled up by [Mets](https://theathletic.com/mlb/team/mets/) third baseman David Wright, who looked Hosmer back and threw on to first baseman Lucas Duda for the out. [Giants](https://theathletic.com/mlb/team/sf-giants/)-Mets series in advance of an upcoming Giants-Royals series. If so, the message out of the box should have been clear: Bust out of the box on anything hit to center. It doesn’t help that fans are still upset that the biggest off-season move was management’s decision to show the very likable [Xander Bogaerts](https://theathletic.com/mlb/player/xander-bogaerts-MYvz32TQwG5rdNNH/) to the door. To be able to do that is to gain an edge, and sometimes it’s the edge that wins a game. But first, allow me to make the case that the Red Sox might actually be enjoyable this season, if — and try to envision my usage of “if” as being crafted from 30-foot letters carved from marble — they commit themselves to playing a brand of baseball that I freely admit has largely gone out of style. And the 2010-11 Bruins. And the 2007-08 Celtics.

The loss of Eovaldi is a big hit to the rotation given his reliability over the last few seasons. He possesses an elite arsenal and should be a fun watch for fans this season, though expect a rough outing every now and then as he adjusts to facing Major League batters. Having more reliable arms in the pen should be a major asset for this team, especially given their question marks in the starting rotation. The bullpen was a major cause of concern for Boston last season and the team appears to have upgraded the unit in the offseason. The Red Sox will use Yoshida’s pop from the left side of the plate after raking in the bottom-third of MLB in total homers last season. Boston’s ownership was able to redeem themselves just a bit when they locked young third baseman Rafael Devers to a long-term contract, signaling to fans that the team was not about to let another homegrown star depart during the offseason.

Orioles-Red Sox series preview: A season of high hopes begins (Camden Chat)

Ready or not, here we go. The 2023 Orioles season begins this afternoon in Boston. And for the first time in a long time, the O's begin a season with the ...

Houck, a Sox first-round pick in 2017, opened last year in Boston’s rotation but lasted just three starts until they shifted him to the bullpen, where he served as the closer for a while before undergoing season-ending back surgery. Even as his strikeout rate has dipped in his three seasons in the majors, down to 6.2 K/9 last year, he has improved at keeping runners off base, posting a career-best 1.253 WHIP in 2022. Gibson, after a largely unsuccessful stint in the National League for the last year and a half, returns to the AL, where he was an All-Star for the Rangers in 2021. Kluber’s sojourn through the AL East continues; he’s played for three different clubs in this division in the last three years, following the Rays last year and the Yankees in 2021. He spent the first half of the season battling back from a right rib stress fracture, finally returned to the majors in July...and then got hit by a comebacker in his second start, breaking his hand, and the next month broke his wrist while riding a bike, ending his season after just 5.2 innings. And for the first time in a long time, the O’s begin a season with the realistic expectation of being relevant in the postseason race. They roughed up Kluber for a 5.64 ERA last year, and he beat them only once in his six tries. In 2020, the Birds won two out of three despite a blowout loss in the opener, and in 2021 the O’s pulled off a shocking sweep that was, unfortunately, not at all indicative of how the rest of the season would go. In 2020, the Birds were supposed to host Opening Day on March 26, only for the pandemic to come along and ruin everything (the O’s ultimately began a truncated 60-game season in Boston four months later). Gibson’s 81 ERA+ last year was the third-worst of any of this year’s Opening Day starters, and Kluber’s 84 was fourth-worst. The Red Sox are a familiar opening opponent, as this is the third time in the past four years the Birds have begun the season at Fenway Park. This is the first time in four years that the O’s are actually starting the season on the day they were originally scheduled to.

[Yu Chang](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/changyu01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&utm_source=www.mlbtraderumors.com&utm_campaign=2023-03-30_br) is slotted in as the backup infielder for now, but Mondesí could push him for playing time if healthy. Now that Opening Day has rolled around, it seems they still don’t expect him to return in the next two months, as he will now be ineligible to return prior to late May. A strong and healthy finish here in 2023 could make him an intriguing option in free agency this winter. The problem is that those 358 games have been scattered over seven different seasons due to various injuries. [Chris Cotillo of MassLive](https://twitter.com/ChrisCotillo/status/1641440097122779136). Mondesí, 27, came over from the Royals in an offseason trade. [Julian McWilliams of the Boston Globe](https://twitter.com/byJulianMack/status/1640838405884878849) had reported a few days ago that this was likely to be the way things played out. Outfielder [Raimel Tapia](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/t/tapiara01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&utm_source=www.mlbtraderumors.com&utm_campaign=2023-03-30_br) has had his contract selected, as was [reported](https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2023/03/red-sox-to-select-raimel-tapia-option-jarren-duran.html) earlier this week. The talented infielder has stolen 133 bases in 358 games while also earning strong grades for his glovework. The Red Sox seemed to know that Mondesí was still on the mend from that surgery when they acquired him, as chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom said in January that Mondesí “still has a ways to go” in his rehab. In a corresponding move, infielder [Adalberto Mondesí](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/mondera02.shtml?utm_medium=linker&utm_source=www.mlbtraderumors.com&utm_campaign=2023-03-30_br) has been placed on the 60-day injured list.

If the team as a whole, like it did in 2018, manages to stay healthy...” “The team is super strong up the middle, and the starting pitching looks solid. By then they will have broken down rehabbing senior citizen pitching, and be squashed by the good teams they play in August and September. “This 2023 team will also struggle, such that a .500 season is about as good as it will get. “Without late season major additions, I see 80-85 wins, and they sneak into the playoffs if things break their way. I have two predictions for the 2023 season: 78- 84 record, and Bloom finally being asked to leave at the end of this season.” I predict a very mediocre team and bad to watch, many blown saves, and loses due to lack of hitting. Starting pitching is questionable over the long term, catchers are very average, and defense looks to be below average (especially with little speed in the outfield and average arms). And while excitement is brewing, [Red Sox](https://www.bostonglobe.com/2023/03/29/sports/red-sox-have-road-map-this-year-no-one-knows-where-it-will-lead/?p1=Article_Inline_Text_Link) fans are split on how well they think the team will do this season. The Boston Red Sox have a lot to prove in 2023 after a disappointing 2022 season that left them at the bottom of the American League East.

The 2023 team has a lot of postseason experience on its roster, but it has to translate into wins in order to get to October. A [lackluster offseason](https://nesn.com/2022/11/red-sox-offseason-to-do-list-boston-blueprint-2023-success/) left fans angry, which was on full display during Red Sox Winter Weekend earlier this year. “I think everyone has a chip on their shoulder in that clubhouse who was here last year. Red Sox vowed to cut down on walks. Then they tied an Opening ... (The Athletic)

Free passes plagued Red Sox pitching last season. They thought they had fixed the problem, but the initial returns were discouraging.

The free passes allowed the Orioles to mount a comfortable lead and even at that, the Red Sox offensive made a comeback pulling within a run in the ninth. Home plate umpire Lance Barksdale abided by the rules, though, and docked Martin a ball for not starting the at-bat on time. It’s one of those things where the command was a little bit off and there was no room for error in that situation. “Just one of those days,” he said, noting he didn’t feel rushed by the pitch clock. Even in the midst of a rough season on the mound otherwise, he never issued more than one walk per outing. So, it’s a tough situation, but one that we obviously believe he can come in and close the door on. It didn’t get much better and by the time Kluber walked off the mound with one out in the fourth inning, he’d issued four walks. “Throughout the course of games, there’s gonna be times where your feel comes and goes,” he added. The Red Sox had entered the inning tied 1-1 but exited the fourth down 4-1. “I’d rather them beat me by earning it and me not just handing free passes,” he said. “We’ve got to do a better job locking them down. “Too many walks, a lot of traffic, we’ve got to be better at that,” manager Alex Cora said.

[Kaleb Ort](http://www.espn.com/mlb/player/_/id/42639/kaleb-ort) and Tapia earned Boston’s final two roster spots to open the season. [Christian Arroyo](http://www.espn.com/mlb/player/_/id/33185/christian-arroyo) stayed in the game after taking an inadvertent cleat to the side of his head in the second inning. [Justin Turner](http://www.espn.com/mlb/player/_/id/29607/justin-turner) then reached on an infield single to third when Urias’ throw was wide, scoring Tapia. Red Sox overreactions: Poor pitching spoils Opening Day vs. Orioles (NBC Sports Boston)

The Boston Red Sox made things interesting with a late rally, but it wasn't enough to overcome their pitching woes as they fell to the Baltimore Orioles on ...

It'll be up to the pitching staff to hold up its end of the bargain. That was only a preview as Thursday was further proof he's going to light the league on fire in his first full campaign. He started his sophomore season with a homer off Kluber, then went on to finish 5-for-5 with four RBI. He finished 12th in the voting last year despite playing in only 113 games. The first pitch Kelly threw was wild and allowed a run to score. 1 draft pick, could become the first catcher since Buster Posey in 2012 to win MVP. He made up for it by inducing a double play but went on to walk two batters and allow two RBI singles. [Rafael Devers](https://www.nbcsports.com/boston/red-sox/rafael-devers?b) had two hits to begin what should be another All-Star season for the slugger. Despite a rough Opening Day, fans shouldn't panic about the pitching staff just yet. Altogether, Red Sox pitching allowed 10 earned runs on 10 hits and nine walks. Veteran right-hander Corey Kluber got the Opening Day start and struggled, allowing five earned runs in only 3 1/3 innings. He wrapped up his lackluster outing with an Adam Frazier double, a Jorge Mateo single, and a Cedric Mullins walk before being replaced by reliever Zack Kelly.

“He felt a little bit off as far as command, but stuff-wise very similar to what we saw in his last outing against the Twins.” Cora suggested Paxton is about a week or two behind Brayan Bello in his progression, putting him in position to possibly return by late April. He also committed an error in the eighth, throwing well wide of Devers at third trying to nail the lead runner. Arroyo was shaken up but remained in the game. He went 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles, two runs scored, and a quick game-tying RBI groundout. Jorge Mateo botched the throw to first and Yoshida advanced to second on the error.

Red Sox: Christian Arroyo stayed in the game after taking an inadvertent cleat to the side of his head in the second inning. The Orioles took advantage of MLB's bigger bases — going from 15- to 18-inch squares — that are being used for the first time this season. Baltimore led 10-4 before Bryan Baker allowed three runs in the eighth to give the Red Sox some hope. Masataka Yoshida grounded to shortstop Jorge Mateo, who stepped on second for the force but threw wildly to first, allowing Verdugo to score. Boston Red Sox outfielder Masataka Yoshida got his first taste of Opening Day in Major League Baseball Thursday at Fenway Park.

The Red Sox turned a lot of heads when they signed Yoshida to a five-year, $90 million contract last December. It took him almost no time to engrain himself into Boston sports lore. The 29-year-old rookie from Japan went 2-for-4 at the plate, scoring a run and driving in one as well.

New left fielder Masataka Yoshida looked like the real deal, going 2 for 4 with an RBI and easily turning around a 95 mph fastball over the inside corner. I can't really crush them today, because the ratio of negatives to positives basically mirrored the 10-9 final vs. Masataka Yoshida just won the World Baseball Classic! It all felt forced, befitting an endeavor that has lost its luster at roughly the same speed the Red Sox have shed homegrown All-Stars.

"If coming set and still having eight or nine, 10 seconds on the clock, maybe that's going to be better, because then we can hold the ball and then we control the clock. Some of their jumps were so large, the runners were three-quarters of the way to second before Brasier even threw. "It's something we're going to have go back and look at the video on and just collectively have a better effort of holding the ball or mixing up timing and things like that," said catcher Reese McGuire. That didn't leave enough time to vary tempo without potentially incurring a violation. A key factor in Baltimore's 10-9 Opening Day victory on Thursday was its ability to run at will.

Red Sox take batting practice to a futuristic level with 'robot pitcher ... (The Boston Globe)

The Trajekt Arc system re-creates the arsenal of a selected major league pitcher and delivers the ball in precisely his manner.

It can be used for pitch design (for instance, getting a read on what a pitch with a specific velocity and spin might look like if the seams were reoriented), catcher development, and umpire training. MLB currently permits the use of Trajekt before and after games — but not during them. Whereas the system comes with generic pitcher projections, the Sox have adjusted theirs to project the image of specific pitchers. According to an industry source, the machines are leased to teams for a five-figure monthly fee. “I think that aspect of it is great for your eyes.” With the Dodgers, Turner had used virtual-reality systems that approximated the flight of specific pitchers’ repertoires. For most of two weeks after getting hit in the face by a pitch March 6, Turner couldn’t hit outdoors or face live pitching. There is also a patented ball-orientation controller that positions the seams to precisely configure the movement of a ball — critical, for instance, for firing a two-seam as opposed to four-seam fastball. The Trajekt screen rolls on a set of metal tracks so that its center lands at the pitcher’s horizontal release point, up to 3½ feet from the middle of the rubber. Red Sox players can select from a list of available pitchers, whether it be a teammate like Tanner Houck or an opponent like Cole. The video projection system works in tandem with a programmable three-wheeled pitching machine to fire pitches that replicate the arsenals of real major leaguers more closely than any known training tool in baseball history. In a batting cage at Fenway South in Fort Myers, Fla., Red Sox hitters now have the option to do just that whenever they’d like.

"It means a lot," Kelly said. The mental part of it, the execution part of it, the pitching part, it means a lot." "Obviously, everybody knows I throw a lot of changeups, and it wasn't there today," Kelly said. "It didn't feel good coming out of the hand, the execution wasn't there, and in that situation, you don't have time to try to figure it out. Kelly is a changeup artist, and on a 38-degree afternoon, he had no feel for the pitch. In the back corner of the room, young right-hander Zack Kelly sat dejectedly at his locker.

The bullpen was lousy and the lineup has a lot of soft spots. The Red Sox pitchers did not do that nearly often enough in their 3-hour, 10-minute game. The Red Sox listed the attendance Thursday as a sell-out of 36,049. Triple-A Worcester will feature several of the organization's top pitching prospects, while rising star Ceddanne Rafaela is assigned to Double-A Portland.

Another middle infielder, Brainer Bonaci, will start the year in extended spring training after visa issues delayed his arrival in spring training. As expected, top prospect Marcelo Mayer will open the year in High-A Greenville, the same level at which he finished 2022. Two other relatively unheralded pitchers who had standout springs will also open in Double-A Portland. Yorke spent the final month of 2021 and all of 2022 in High-A Greenville (SC), where he excelled in ‘21 but struggled in ‘22. Jarren Duran will primarily play center field, but he’ll also see time in left. Triple-A Worcester will feature several of the organization’s top pitching prospects, including a rotation with righthander Bryan Mata and lefties Brandon Walter and Chris Murphy.

Red Sox Hope Alex Verdugo Delivers Breakout Campaign in 2023 (Just Baseball)

If the Boston Red Sox are going to contend this season, it is going to be reliant on Alex Verdugo playing his absolute best in right field.

The right fielder went on to go 2-for-5 and scored two runs in what was ultimately a 10-9 loss against the Orioles. On Opening Day, Verdugo led off the Red Sox season with a triple. If Verdugo improves defensively and can hit to a similar clip, the Red Sox will feel great about him being their right fielder long-term. In return for Betts, the Red Sox acquired right fielder Alex Verdugo, infield prospect Jeter Downs and catching prospect Connor Wong. Although fans had high hopes for Downs in the future, he was never the star piece of this trade. Opening Day 2023 will mark the fourth season since the Red Sox traded their homegrown, superstar right fielder, Mookie Betts, to the Dodgers.

Opening Day did little to quiet concerns about Red Sox (pressherald.com)

Commentary: Boston opened with an ugly loss to the Orioles, and it certainly looks like it is going to be a long summer.

The bullpen was lousy and the lineup has a lot of soft spots. The Red Sox listed the attendance as a sell-out of 36,049. Baseball is experiencing a mini resurgence on the strength of a terrific World Baseball Classic, emerging stars, and well-received rule changes. The Red Sox rallied late to make the score more respectable in a 10-9 loss. But the game did very little to change any minds about the predicted long summer in Boston. Unlike in years when the team’s offseason moves stirred excitement, this team has to prove it’s worth getting behind.
