'Fighting for More': NL Champ Phillies Drop Opening Day Hype Video (NBC 10 Philadelphia)

'This season, we're fightin' for more,' Phillies catcher Garret Stubbs says while narrating the Phillies 2023 season hype video released on social media.

"And this season we're fighting for more." "We good?" "OK fine, a few more." The team is chasing a World Series ring. It makes sense since he acted as DJ during the postseason run fueled by that song. A voice is then heard saying: "Yup, we want to see it all again, too."

Phillies season preview: 3 questions facing 2022 NL champs (CBS News)

Baseball is finally back, and here are three big questions facing the Philadelphia Phillies.

The Milwaukee Brewers can't be discounted either and there could always be a surprise. The Phils snuck into the postseason in 2022 and rode a wave to the World Series as the third wild-card team. But they did and it would be difficult to swallow, say, a first-round loss this year. Philadelphia will be competing with the likes of the Atlanta Braves, New York Mets, Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres and St. The Astros lost the 2021 World Series before winning it all against the Phils last season. The Texas Rangers did it. We know the story. The Houston Astros did it. If Castellanos bounces back, the Phillies should be able to mask Hoskins' absence easier. He also worked on his approach and the spring sample was encouraging in that regard. The same thing happened in Cincinnati. That's a consequence of losing Hoskins, who was the Phillies' best right-handed power bat.

Wheeler is as good a pitcher as there is in the sport. Middleton has made the Phillies competitive and for all their potential and questions, they will be impossible to ignore. There is the other. A pennant is a pennant and they won one. The bullpen is improved. There is not a No. With Harper and Rhys Hoskins injured, there is not a power-hitting DH or pinch-hitter. — the Phillies continue to show complete confidence in Bryson Stott, with some in the organization muttering references to Chase Utley. Thomson’s mangling of the bullpen in the World Series was horrific, specifically his decision to pull a rested Zack Wheeler after 73 pitches in the elimination game while throwing a shutout. Begin with the manager, on a skimpy two-year contract – one year to manage, the next to be bought out if necessary. And they did address some problems in the offseason. But it does buy a team at least one sellout (non-fireworks-night division) and assurance that it won’t be booed until the first time it strands runners and second and third.

Phillies counting on helping Gregory Soto like they did José ... (The Philadelphia Inquirer)

The new duo topped 100 mph more than any other lefties last season. Improving Soto's control will be a key for the Phillies bullpen.

It became a legitimate out pitch for him, and a key to his success down the stretch. [He and Alvarado] are two different looks, but if both of them are throwing strikes, it’s a good thing.” Alvarado has continued to prove that his command woes are a thing of the past. But if he does, the two lefties will be a lethal combination. So, call it maybe a little rebalance of his portfolio and pitch usage. I think he’s going to be a key piece for us.” Nevertheless, the Phillies are optimistic that they can help Soto take a similar trajectory as Alvarado. “He’s a warrior,” Alvarado said of Soto. After walking 18 batters in 26⅔ innings in the first half of 2022, he walked just six in 24⅓ in the second half. “It’ll be like a 1-2 punch,” Alvarado said. Alvarado struggled to locate his pitches for most of his career, but after a brief stint in triple-A Lehigh Valley last season, he returned to the Phillies as a new pitcher. As it turns out, Alvarado was also a fan of his.

Jake Cave has had a terrific spring, but considering he has a .614 OPS over the last three years, the Phillies will most likely have a hard time making up for Harper’s bat in his absence. Despite the slow finish, the Phillies caught fire in the Postseason.

Rafael Marchan (right hand) was placed on the 60-day IL to make room on the 40-man for Rule 5 pick Noah Song. Brandon Marsh is locked in as the starter in CF and will play the majority of the time. Vasquez, who also came over from the Giants this offseason, may have had his case aided by the Phillies' need to use Strahm in the rotation early in the season. Pache is out of minor-league options so he'll be added to the roster when he arrives. Seager and first baseman Nathaniel Lowe should be be big beneficiaries of the elimination of the shift. Pache is expected to join the Phillies before Saturday’s game against the Rangers. “Right now, the big key is that we know he’s an outstanding defensive outfielder, so, for us, he’s a real good complement to what we have with our ballclub.” Pache also figures to start in center field against tough left-handed pitching. Pache came to the majors in 2020 as a touted prospect. Dombrowski said he didn’t consult Long before pulling off the trade for Pache, but Long has already dived into video of Pache’s at-bats. “But if anybody has a club that can hopefully help him in being receptive to things, it’s us with Kevin Long because he’s an outstanding hitting coach.”

And if he can help Pache turn things around offensively, it wouldn’t take much for the 24-year-old to still have a solid big league career given how talented he is as a defender. “So in Pache’s case, we just think he is a really, really good defensive center fielder,” Dombrowski said. “Now, Kevin has had a chance to look at his video afterwards — yesterday we gave him a heads up. The Phillies put up a big fifth inning and ride 7 innings of 1-run Nola ball to a 6-3 victory. Dominguez gets the call in the 9th. Hall was a key cog in the Phillies playoff run late last summer until Bryce Harper returned and he was demoted. Manager Rob Thomson would not commit to a full time closer or set bullpen roles in the spring. Nonetheless, it'll be in play for the 2023 season, and Thursday afternoon. Anything can happen on any given day, but don't expect the Rangers to rough Nola up. Look for Long Ball Hall to go deep on Opening Day. 2023 marks the sixth straight Opening Day start for Nola, the longest tenured Phillie. If the Phillies see peak DeGrom, the bats could be quiet early indeed. When healthy, the 35-year-old is probably the most dominant pitcher on the planet. When they hit Globe Life Field to play the Rangers on Thursday, they'll be a lot more than two wins from a championship. Opening Day 2023: Phillies take on Rangers in season opener (WHYY)

The Opening Day roster includes 13 pitchers, two catchers, six infielders and five outfielders.

Hoskins is scheduled for surgery in nearby Fort Worth on the same day of the season opener. 2, and he was 5-4 with a 3.08 ERA in 11 regular-season games before winning a wild-card game for the Mets. The Phillies will look different from when deGrom faced them in New York’s opener two years ago. “It’s the first plant-based restaurant to take residency at a Philadelphia sports venue,” says Jared Kane, director of development, at Greens and Grains. The Rangers pitching staff put up a 4.22 ERA collectively last season while averaging 8.3 strikeouts and 3.6 walks per nine innings. DeGrom is 9-1 with a 2.18 ERA and 136 strikeouts over 120 innings in 20 career starts against the Phillies. It comes days after president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski said discussions about a contract extension had broken off, and the pitcher indicated those could wait until after the season. In three opening-day starts for the Mets, deGrom tossed 17 scoreless innings with 25 strikeouts. He had a career-low 1.08 ERA over 92 innings in 2021 before missing the final three months with right forearm tightness and a sprained elbow, then was shut down late in spring training last year because of a stress reaction in his right scapula. Four players remain from the Philadelphia starting lineup that deGrom faced in his 2021 opener, but only catcher J.T. The Opening Day roster includes 13 pitchers, two catchers, six infielders and five outfielders.

Phillies' Rhys Hoskins undergoes ACL surgery, recovery expected ... (The Philadelphia Inquirer)

Manager Rob Thomson says surgery went “extremely well," which is good news for the Phillies veteran who suffered an ACL tear as spring training wrapped up.

Outfielder Christian Pache, who was acquired by the Phillies in a trade with the A’s on Wednesday night, will arrive in Texas on Thursday night. After a historic spring training, in which he hit .462/.500/.827 with a 1.327 OPS, Jake Cave earned a spot in the opening day lineup on Thursday. As players started filtering into the visiting clubhouse before Thursday’s game, it was hard to miss Hoskins’ jersey hanging in his locker. Hoskins plans to be around the team as much as possible. “It’ll obviously be tough for him to not be out there, but he’s a leader in this locker room. While the Phillies arrived at GlobeLife Field ahead of their opening day game against the Rangers, Hoskins underwent left ACL reconstruction surgery in Fort Worth with Dr.

Phillies honor injured Rhys Hoskins with perfect locker room touch (NBC Sports)

The Phillies are keeping Rhys Hoskins' presence around the 2023 team alive in a very awesome way. By Adam Hermann.

It's tough timing for Hoskins to suffer a season-ending injury, and it could potentially spell the end of his time with the Phillies. The vibes from the 2022 Philadelphia Phillies squad were sky-high, a tight-knit team whose players constantly picked each other up. Long-time Phillies slugger Rhys Hoskins tore his ACL late in Spring Training, an absolutely brutal break for the 30-year-old first baseman entering a crucial year of his career.

Phillies option Dalton Guthrie to Triple A with Cristian Pache arriving (NBC Sports)

With Cristian Pache reporting in time for Game 2, the Phillies made a roster move after their opening-day loss to the Rangers. By Corey Seidman.

He'll play every day at Triple A and will likely be the next outfielder up in the event of an injury. In Pache, the Phillies see a player with upside who can help right away with his above-average defense and right-handed bat. He was the Braves' top prospect and one of the top prospects in all of baseball as recently as spring training 2021 but he hasn't hit.

Phillies finalize opening-day roster: Dalton Guthrie makes team ... (The Philadelphia Inquirer)

The roster has 13 pitchers and 13 position players, including Guthrie, whose spot appeared tenuous with the trade for Cristian Pache.

In perhaps the only bit of drama, the Phillies added right-hander Noah Song to the 40-man roster and placed him on the 15-day injured list with a low back strain. Bryce Harper was placed on the 10-day injured list, as expected, while he continues his recovery from Tommy John elbow surgery. The Phillies submitted their 26-man roster by MLB’s noon ET deadline.

Rangers rally after deGrom struggles to beat Phillies 11-7 (Spectrum News)

The Rangers beat Nola and the National League champion Philadelphia Phillies 11-7 on Thursday.

The game also marked the Rangers debut of Bruce Bochy, the three-time World Series champion who was back in the dugout after a three-year retirement for his 26th opener as a manager. Alec Bohm hit a two-run homer in the second inning on a 99 mph fastball from deGrom. Nola, the 29-year-old right-hander making his sixth and maybe final opening-day start for the Phillies, also allowed five runs on four hits in 3 2/3 innings — he didn't allow a hit the first three. “The first inning took its toll on him, because it was a long inning, 21, 22 pitches,” Phillies manager Rob Thomson said. “I'm just glad I don't have to face (deGrom) anymore,” said Grossman, adding that the pitcher will pick up the team plenty this season.

Aaron Nola, Gregory Soto struggle in Phillies' loss to Rangers (NBC Sports)

It was the first high-stress inning with a pitch timer that actually mattered for the Phillies, and it didn't go well.

Soto, for what it's worth, has an 8.20 ERA in the first six innings of games and a 3.23 ERA in the seventh inning or later for his career. It was the first time in his career he was unable to hold onto a five-run lead. Nola got Brad Miller to ground out and that was the end of his day. "They hung on a little bit longer, they could get to 'em a little bit better. Nola spent the rest of it out of the stretch and could never quite get comfortable. Aaron Nola cruised through the first three innings Thursday in Texas and went into the bottom of the fourth with a 5-0 lead.

2023 is the first year that teams are allowed to have sponsorship patches, and the Arizona Diamondbacks, Boston Red Sox, Cincinnati Reds, Houston Astros, Los Angeles Angels and San Diego Padres have already taken advantage of an additional revenue source. So left-handed pitchers and hitters — José Alvarado and Kyle Schwarber, for example — would have the patch on their right sleeve, because that’s what faces the camera more frequently. He cut the lead down to three and left himself a triple away from the cycle – on a day when the Phillies came up with three of them. But still, 3-for-4 with a homer, a double, and three runs batted in to begin the year? "But it looks like he's fresh now, swinging the bat good." In the fifth, with two outs but the Phillies still in striking distance with two on, Bohm was in the hole 0-2, yet fouled his way into a seven-pitch at-bat against Rangers reliever Brock Burke that he turned into an RBI single up the middle. In the fourth, after seeing three pitches from deGrom again, he drove the third to right for a one-out double of his own, later scoring on a Brandon Marsh two-bagger to put the Phillies up 5-0 and sitting pretty. After Rangers starter Jacob deGrom tore right through five of the Phillies' first six batters – Nick Castellanos worked his way on with a one-out double to right in the second – Bohm stepped up to the plate and took the first two pitches outside the zone for a 2-0 count.

Realmuto had three hits including a double and triple while Cave, though he had nothing to show for it, put two great swings on the ball. While no one specifically put blame on the newly implemented pitch clock, it is likely the timer played a role in Nola, Soto, and Brogdon’s incapability to settle down with momentum swinging the Rangers way. With two outs in the fourth, Rob Thomson pulled the plug on Nola’s outing and went to newcomer Gregory Soto to finish the inning. [Gregory Soto](https://theathletic.com/mlb/player/gregory-soto-4MOEFKokIfAVuJ0S/), who had not entered a game before the seventh inning in the past two seasons, replaced Nola. “Yeah, a little bit,” Nola said. “It’s just something to get used to.” “He’s process-oriented.” There was time for that in prior seasons, and often it manifested in Nola throwing over to first base multiple times during an at-bat to slow down everything else. Because momentum is going to be huge now with how fast things happen and the pitcher not being able to get a breath in.” This is a brave new world for the Phillies — a team that must learn to navigate life with expectations in a sport that has undergone radical change.

Thomson alternated righties and lefties in the top eight lineup spots, which had something to do with it. "Just the at-bats in general were really impressive, some two-strike hitting, hitting the ball the other way. He wouldn't be the first highly touted player to hit his stride in his age-27 season. Bohm had a big spring with four doubles and four homers after showing up with significantly more muscle. "Kept the pressure on and put good at-bats together.
