Introducing the 'Mariners Extra' newsletter, plus five bold predictions ... (The Seattle Times)

Pull up your socks, roll up your pants and don't forget the eyeblack: The greatest day of the year has arrived. That's right — it's the debut of The Seattle ...

But by July, it will be clear that the Mariners will need a DH upgrade — and they’ll have to go out and trade for a proven bat. But if the M’s do make a trade-deadline move and add some pop to the lineup, it’s not out of the question that they could catch the Astros in the division — and maybe even topple their biggest rival when they inevitably meet up in the American League Championship Series. But the Mariners do like to have flexibility with the DH spot, and their plan, for now, is to rotate players there, depending on matchups with opposing pitchers. As much as anything, though, Raleigh was the talk of M’s camp, and if he can repeat his final four months of the 2022 season, hitting in the middle of the lineup, he’ll join the conversation as the best catcher in baseball. The guess here is he’ll wind up with something like a 2.85 ERA, 225 strikeouts in 205 innings and 6.0 WAR — numbers that will put him right in the thick of AL Cy Young consideration. Houston, coming off another World Series championship, are again the clear favorites in the division. We saw how dominant he can be in Toronto during the wild-card series, and it’s tantalizing to think about what that could look like over 32 starts in a full season on a playoff contender. Luis Castillo is a bona fide ace, Robbie Ray looks closer to his 2021 Cy Young peak, Logan Gilbert and George Kirby are two of the most talented young pitchers in the game, and Marco Gonzales appeared as motivated as anyone on the roster this spring. Ryan and I both started here at The Times in 2013. The hottest Mariners takes for the 2023 season from Seattle Sports (710 ESPN Seattle)

How good will the Mariners be, and who will be leading them along the way? We've collected our hottest M's takes from the Seattle Sports pit.

[starting to throw that split](https://sports.mynorthwest.com/1745167/drayer-mariners-logan-gilbert-showcases-new-splitter-spring-debut/), and that pitch is filthy. He’s got the approach, he’s got the swing. All dynasties eventually end, and if this is the year for that to happen in Houston, the Mariners are in a great position. And then he can live off that fastball middle of the strike zone because those pitches play off each other so well.” “He’s doesn’t need to be an All-Star, he just needs to be what we need him to be: solid defensively, and just get on base. I understand this belief, and I agree that the Mariners need to establish themselves not just as competition for the Astros but capable of overtaking them. can ball out and connect the dots with all this other talent out there and hold it down defensively at that shortstop spot, (hit well with) no more shifting going on, I’m telling you, J.P. The fatal flaw of the Astros is that they’re not as deep as you may think, and it’s already putting them behind the 8-ball. Raleigh was in a similar boat as he had 27 homers in just 119 games last year, and most of that came after a slow start to the season. And that means Seattle needs to topple Houston to get there. As for Hernández, the new guy in Seattle’s lineup, the two-time Silver Slugger hit 32 home runs in 2021 and 25 in 2022. The M’s look like they got better this offseason, too, making upgrades at some key positions while at the same time several up and coming players are in line to take another step in 2023.

Series preview: Guardians at Mariners (Let's Go Tribe)

Can the Guardians hit left-handed pitching? We're gonna find out real quick.

It’s a frisbee-like pitch with virtually no drop but a lot of arm-side run. As for those lefties, the Guardians will first face Robbie Ray, the man with a slider as tight as his pants. Both give up a lot of fly balls, and both throw a wide array of pitches, with Gilbert bringing a four-seamer, slider, curveball, changeup, sinker, and a newly developed splitter into the equation. Saturday’s contest between Logan Gilbert and Aaron Civale is a battle of two pitchers that share some similarities. He was freed from that Kentucky prison midway through last season and recorded 77 strikeouts in 65.1 innings with the Mariners. The Guards open their 2023 campaign on the road in not-so-sunny Seattle facing a pair of lefties that the Mariners hope can help carry them into the postseason for consecutive seasons.

Crowd makes 'huge difference' as Mariners shed scoreless ... (The Seattle Times)

Déjà vu all over again. And then, Ty France ended the tension and the scoring drought in the most emphatic way possible.

It was a night just begging for a clutch hit to support the absolute brilliant pitching of Luis Castillo. Once all the pregame pomp and circumstance had ended — capped by a star-studded first-pitch ceremony of legend overload — the goose eggs started racking up again. Certainly, the pitching was exemplary — just four hits allowed, two of them coming with two outs in the ninth. The crowd, that had been trying to will the Mariners to a run all night, enjoyed a cathartic release of emotion after being gifted with three of them at once. And then, in the eighth inning, with visions of another extra-inning showdown dancing in the heads of the sellout throng of 45,268, Ty France ended the tension and the scoring drought in the most emphatic way possible. Of course, Seattle’s 2022 season had ended ever so frustratingly on just such a scenario, when the M’s and Astros went into the 18th inning riding a 0-0 score in the American League Division Series.

James Karinchak takes the loss as the Guardians' offense is held scoreless against Seattle.

He stole second and went to third on La Stella’s ground out to first. Like Castillo, he stayed in the game. He started the third by sending a 96-mph liner back to the mound. Bieber found himself the target of a batted ball in the fourth. It appeared Bieber intentionally tried to make a kick save on the grounder. A wild pitch got past Zunino to move Suarez to third with one out. He followed by throwing a pitch to the backstop before Crawford walked on a disputed 3-2 pitch that manager Terry Francona argued was a foul ball. The ball buzzed through Castillo’s braids and skidded to shortstop. In two starts he limited them to one run in 12 innings with 14 strikeouts. He allowed one hit and struck out six in 76 pitches. It’s cold, but it was noisy, and the atmosphere really got more live in that inning.” He was charged with a pitch clock violation that added a ball to Crawford’s count.

Matt Brash started the Mariners season with a memorable moment, sending an All-Star hitting flying on an impressive strikeout.

The 24-year-old Brash worked around a single and struck out two in a scoreless inning of work in Game 1 of the Mariners’ four-game series with Cleveland, reaching 99 mph with his fastball along the way. I don’t even know really how to explain it but (how) he can grip the ball, I think it’s why he spins it’s so darn well and just applies force to the ball forever.” I actually think it’s, like, absurd how good the stuff of that pitch is.” Ramírez is a four-time All-Star and four-time Silver Slugger winner, and in 2022 he slashed .280/.355/.514 with 29 home runs and an MLB-leading 44 doubles. Ty France drove in the only runs in the game, smashing a deep fly ball over the wall in right field for a three-run homer.

Before the game, Servais made it clear that he wouldn’t push Castillo to 100 pitches. The Mariners staff was on the field immediately to see if Castillo was hurt. “He has a routine, a very lengthy routine, and he’s had to try to make adjustments with the things he does, things like the ball flipping and everything else. “It was 50-50, 50% head and 50% hair,” he said through interpreter Freddy Llanos. It was France’s third hit in a game where the Mariners had seven total. It made a huge difference in the ballgame today.” “We’ve seen Karinchak a lot in the past,” Servais said. So if that one didn’t go out, I wasn’t really sure the one that actually did go out was going to.” And that as a 70 out of 100, he is a bronze-level player.

Fann: 6 takeaways from Mariners' thrilling opening day win over ... (710 ESPN Seattle)

The Mariners got an opening day win over Cleveland in a matchup of two top AL teams. Joe Fann has six things that stood out from the game.

The Mariners endured a brief scare in the third inning when Castillo was hit by a line drive back up the middle that he shared half hit his head and half hit his hair. Mariners fans jumped into action and immediately started counting down the seconds on the clock prior to every ensuing pitch. He ultimately allowed the three-run homer to France after walking J.P Crawford and hitting Kolten Wong. Karinchak threw a fastball to the backstop shortly thereafter and never regained control of the inning. He struck out just three batters while having to get out of a trio of jams. I can guarantee you Guardians fans didn’t have that same level of concern during La Stella’s pair of at-bats with runners in scoring position. La Stella hasn’t posted a wRC+ of more than 100 since 2020, and he’s only had one season with double-digit home runs. The Mariners opened up their 2023 campaign with a thrilling 3-0 win over the Cleveland Guardians on Thursday night in front of a packed T-Mobile Park. It was an encouraging start to the season for Seattle’s top X-factor. Mariners fans already knew Castillo was a bonafide ace based on his pair of starts during the postseason last October. Maybe he ends up being a revelation and surprising everyone. Last night felt very different despite not scoring until the eighth inning.

'Filthiest' pitch in MLB belongs to Mariners reliever Matt Brash (The Seattle Times)

Rob Friedman listed that slider from Matt Brash as the “filthiest” pitch in MLB on opening day Thursday.

He made the club last season as the No. “It started perfectly middle and was just last second (that it broke out of the zone). but he didn’t even think that was the best slider he threw in the seventh inning Thursday. … That’s where I was trying to throw it to Ramirez.” As a rookie last season, Brash had an average spin rate of 2,885 rpm, which ranked him No. Ramirez spun 180 degrees and fell onto his rear on top of the plate and then flat onto his back into the right-handed batter’s box.

Past and present: Ichiro and J-Rod's relationship (MLB.com)

Their most recent powwow came on Opening Night when Ichiro presented J-Rod with his 2022 AL Rookie of the Year Award, the honor that Ichiro won 21 years prior.

I'm going to keep doing the right thing. I'm going to keep trying to improve every day. “The preparation, the things that he does, everything about Julio is the same. I'm going to keep being me. “And it's true. "You see a guy and you can just tell that they're going to be different,” Ichiro said. And so I think that's what makes that difference.” In the final week of Spring Training, Rodríguez was on the cover of Sports Illustrated, Gentleman’s Quarterly and The Players’ Tribune, underscoring his prominence -- but also how regularly he’s being pulled in many directions. But it shouldn't affect that player and I think Julio, it doesn't affect him. “I think the eyes that are on Julio, the criticisms or the judgments that come his way, I feel like he’s harder on himself. In recent months, that commentary has shifted some to guidance in handling himself away from it.
