[Brian McTaggart](mailto:[email protected]) has covered the Astros since 2004, and for MLB.com since 2009. We’ve done well by constructing the team the way we have and doing some extensions from time to time, when it makes sense. Under new general manager Dana Brown, the Astros have explored extensions with 2022 All-Stars Framber Valdez and Kyle Tucker, but those talks have been tabled. In terms of free agents, the three-year, $58.5 million deal to [José Abreu](https://www.mlb.com/player/jose-abreu-547989) last offseason is the largest under Crane. “We’ve been back and forth,” Crane said. I think we try to keep who we think we can keep and continue to develop our players with complete flexibility with the roster. Then there’s Altuve and Bregman. Crane didn’t rule out jumping into the deep end of the free-agent pool at some point, but he’s won two titles with his conservative approach. “I think we’ll take that player by player,” Crane said. The Astros have played in six consecutive ALCS and won four pennants since 2017, including a pair of World Series titles. I think some teams have learned that. I think we try to plan out pretty far, but nobody I think can tell you what’s going to happen in eight or nine or 10 years, or even five years.

It's only logical that after winning the most recent World Series, the Houston Astros would want to start the new MLB season in style.
It should be interesting to see which celebrities throw the first pitch on Friday and Saturday games. Minute Maid Park will host these two games that will hopefully offer them a chance to win the first game of the season in front of their fans. Megan Thee Stallion's presence had nothing to do with the end result, they simply were unlucky in front of their fans. That's right, baseball is back with a bang and the Chicago White Sox visited Texas to play the champions with a special guest to throw the first pitch. During the final inning, they seemed like they could tie the game but the weren't able to do it in the end. Right before the game started, you all know the tradition of throwing the first pitch as it usually is thrown by a celebrity.

In fact, the White Sox didn't even get a run until the eighth inning last night. Tonight, they have to face another tough Astros pitcher in Cristian Javier.
Lynn looked good in the World Baseball Classic, and this is a similar game to the level of pressure (he pitched against Canada). He is a slightly under-the-radar guy, but I think he is going to be one of the best pitchers in the rotation. One game that was a close one up until the end of the game was the White Sox vs. In yesterday’s game, the White Sox ended up taking the game in the top of the ninth. The loss was an under in the Dodgers and Diamondbacks. The Dodgers brought out the bats and put up seven runs before half of the game was over.

But the hope for the Astros was to generate something resembling run support in the later innings against the White Sox bullpen, which they had their chances. I think the lineup looks deeper when David Hensley and Chas McCormick are both in it, but I understand the rationale for having Dubón play second behind a groundball-oriented pitcher like Framber Valdez. It wasn’t off to a great start last night when he threw this meatball to Yasmani Grandal in the eighth inning. After all, Javier gave up just a run on two hits and four walks in five innings in his lone start against the White Sox last year. Javier pitched between five and six innings in 14 of his final 15 starts last season (playoffs included). Lynn, who turns 36 in six weeks, actually missed the first 2½ months of 2022 with an injury. We expect Houston’s lineup to have a much easier go of it Friday against veteran Lance Lynn. But they had to deal with Chicago ace Dylan Cease, the 2022 American League Cy Young runner-up. Well, we’re not fools (at least not in this instance). Why the hesitation? 31 through Game 4 of the World Series. That capped a 2022 postseason in which Javier yielded just one run (a solo homer) and two hits across 12 2/3 innings. We’re backing Javier and the Astros — but not to win the game.
