Sixers vs. Nuggets takeaways: Nikola Jokić praises Joel Embiid ... (The Philadelphia Inquirer)

They may be NBA and MVP rivals, but there is mutual admiration between the big men. Jokić on Embiid: "The guy's a beast and he's so talented..."

Worst of the Worst: The Sixers are losing ground on Milwaukee Bucks and Boston Celtics in regards to contending for the Eastern Conference regular-season title. Best performance: This goes to Jokić, who posted his 29th triple-double of the season. He also failed to grab a rebound, record an assist, get a steal or block a shot in 22 minutes, 35 seconds of action. And if we’re being truthful, the Nuggets (51-23) were toying with the Sixers at times. “We told him once we got that matchup, attack the paint and find guys and find the basket. The Sixers power forward failed to score after missing both of his shot attempts. And the Sixers need to keep riding Tyrese Maxey when he’s cooking. I felt like the floor was kind of open, but they started doubling or like firing off some guys. The Sixers (49-26) were at a huge disadvantage without Embiid and James Harden (left Achilles soreness). “But once I found certain matchups, I knew I could space the floor. However, Embiid was ruled out of the game Monday morning with tightness in his right calf. They may be NBA and MVP rivals, but there is mutual admiration between the big men.

Embiid played in both legs of the Sixers' back-to-back against the Warriors and Suns on Friday and Saturday, respectively. Embiid and Harden are on pace to be the first teammates to lead the league in scoring and assists in the same season since Johnny Moore and Harden participated fully in Philadelphia's morning shootaround -- a marked change from the limited work he was able to do Friday in Golden State -- and ended his time on the court with an emphatic dunk after passing the ball to himself off the backboard. Player grades: Tyrese Maxey, short-handed Sixers fall short in loss ... (Sixers Wire)

Tyrese Maxey and the short-handed Philadelphia 76ers gave a spirited effort, but they come up short to the Denver Nuggets on the road.

He committed a couple of turnovers and he wasn’t able to make an impact with his scoring or his passing as he has been able to in recent games. which caused him to fall to the ground for a bit, but he fought through it in order to help the Sixers. Overall, he shot well, he looked like he was moving better, and the Sixers will take more of this moving forward. He was just too quick for a lot of Denver’s defenders as he was able to get to the rim and convert for easy buckets. He moved his feet on the defensive end to stay in front of Denver’s guards and he knocked down a corner triple to give them a spark. He had a block in the first quarter due to a smart rotation. He knocked down a triple in the second quarter and let the Nuggets know about it as he continued his strong offensive play as of late. He did make an impact as a weakside shot-blocker and he made an effort to communicate defensively, but that was all the positives that could be said. To begin the game, Harris was the only consistent source of offense for the Sixers. Overall, it just wasn’t a great night for Melton as he had his issues on both ends. The Philadelphia 76ers invaded Ball Arena in Denver to face the Nuggets on Monday night looking to end this grueling stretch on a high note. He had some really tough finishes in the paint and that allowed him to get into a rhythm.

Instant observations: Sixers' late comeback falls short vs. Nuggets (PhillyVoice.com)

The Sixers nearly clawed back to steal a win in Denver but couldn't finish off the comeback without Embiid or Harden.

In the end, the Sixers didn't end up leaning on Dedmon too much, which I would argue is to the credit of the staff. To be fair to Dedmon, I think that says more about Tucker and his recent struggles to put the ball in the hoop, rather than the journeyman center who shouldn't play a meaningful minute the rest of the year. • When you have a team loaded with stars and need him to step into a secondary role, Tobias Harris is going to get you 16 points. And because Tucker was a complete non-factor on offense, all Dedmon ended up doing on offense is take up space in the middle of the floor, ruining whatever chance they might have had to attack the paint. This was a night when they needed him to be a Steady Eddy, and they got perhaps the worst version of Melton you could imagine. Sharing the backcourt with just Maxey, there's far too much of The Melton Show, as he tries to do too much on his own and ends up taking wild shots or turning the ball over. Outside of a pair of blocks for Dedmon where he volleyball spiked the ball instead of, I don't know, just tapping it to start a break, Dedmon did just about nothing on the defensive end. • As the Nuggets tried to see out the game with a trio of Nikola Jokic, Michael Porter Jr., and Jamal Murray, the Sixers had already waived the white flag. But you're also not going to replicate what he brings to the table with anybody else, and you have a decent chance of junking up a game by playing a guy who is coming off of the bench like he was shot out of a cannon. I don't ever have to think about whether the Sixers are going to get all that he has to offer. And give Reed credit — he has very clearly worked on his craft during his time in Philadelphia, as even the plays that look funky often end up with Reed slithering through traffic to score around the basket. • Every time you think you should simply write off the Sixers because they have absences at the heart of their lineup, you should make sure to check if Tyrese Maxey is playing or not.

Tyrese Maxey praises depth, fight Sixers showed in loss to Nuggets (Sixers Wire)

Tyrese Maxey liked the depth and the fight the Philadelphia 76ers showed in a road loss to the Denver Nuggets.

With that being said, the Sixers have now lost three games in a row. Maxey, who had 29 points, watched from the bench as his teammates attempted to pull off a shocker. The Sixers were missing both Joel Embiid and James Harden and it was a night that was expected to be a wash for them. “One thing we can take from this is how deep we are,” Maxey continued. worked its way back into the game and the deficit was cut to just three with less than 30 seconds to go. I think what we can take from this is in the first half we were in the game big time.”

The shorthanded Sixers couldn't pull off an improbable comeback Monday night in Denver, falling to a 116-111 loss to the Nuggets. By Noah Levick.

He also missed his first three field goals of the third quarter and had just two points in the period. Improbably, the Sixers made a comeback push. In addition to the results, Maxey’s approach was fantastic; he was relentless and constantly eager to punish Nuggets lapses. The Nuggets somewhat put themselves in that position through turnovers and casual defense, but the Sixers' effort was still exceptional. He reached his 29th triple-double of the season in the third quarter. Undermanned teams like the Sixers can rarely afford that serious of a rough patch. The team fell behind by 11 points in the first quarter, and its guard trio of Maxey, De'Anthony Melton and Shake Milton combined to begin 1 for 11 from the floor. The Nuggets stuck with their main guys. Regardless, Dedmon was head coach Doc Rivers’ choice and the Sixers faced a 14-10 deficit following his first stint. The Sixers did eventually feature small ball when they subbed Georges Niang in for Dedmon and played Tucker at center.
