SDSU reaches Final Four with wild finish against Creighton (ESPN)

San Diego State advanced to its first Final Four on Sunday amid a final frenzy and officiating ambiguity, grinding out a 57-56 victory over Creighton.

[Lamont Butler](http://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/player/_/id/4433183/lamont-butler) led San Diego State with 18 points on 8-for-11 shooting, the only player who consistently found a rhythm on Sunday. "But it was just a war of attrition, and we came out on top." In a town where photo finishes at Churchill Downs are part of the lore, this was a basketball version. Dutcher held a black marker and clipboard in his hands, and he appeared momentarily surprised as the celebration began around him. "Two teams played their tails off, and officiating is part of the game," McDermott said. [Ryan Nembhard](http://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/player/_/id/4433629/ryan-nembhard) slumped at his locker as he attempted to sum up the pain of being on the wrong end of the game-deciding call in No. An NCAA statement after the game said officials "ruled the clock hit zero before the ball touched out of bounds" and time expired. He declined to comment when asked directly about the call on Nembhard, which could have been considered the type of play officials had let go throughout a rugged game. But the Bluejays sputtered offensively in the second half -- shooting just 27.6% -- and never found a way to pull ahead over that stretch. The officials never made a determination of who the ball last touched, as Creighton's One of them also will be a first-time partaker in the national title game next Monday night. "It was a great game," Nembhard said.

Final Four Set: No. 5 Seeds Miami, San Diego State Are In (The New York Times)

Miami rallied from 13 points down to beat Texas, while a foul and a free throw gave San Diego State a win over Creighton. They join UConn and Florida ...

When the game was over, their two sons exchanged a hug in the handshake line and Seiko told Kaluma he loved him. The Bluejays missed all 10 of their 3-point attempts in the half. Baylor Scheierman, who played quarterback in high school, inbounded the ball and threw a long pass toward Kaluma and San Diego State’s Aguek Arop near the other endline. Back in November, when Creighton set out for the Maui Invitational, the Bluejays stopped in San Diego and the next day shared a charter jet to Hawaii with the San Diego State team. Memories of Creighton’s overtime win over San Diego State in the first round of the men’s N.C.A.A. The officials, though, waved both teams back to their benches and reviewed the play to see who had touched the ball last and whether there was any time left. But Creighton didn’t allow another basket and carried a 33-28 lead into the break. Trammell drove to the lane with Ryan Nembhard on his right hip and let loose a floater that just grazed the rim as the buzzer sounded. The game was so thick with turns and tension that it did not end until well after what turned out to be the final buzzer. Miami, trailing and listless for much of the first 30 minutes of its round-of-8 game against Texas on Sunday, mounted a stunning, compact comeback in the men’s N.C.A.A. Norchad Omier, a sophomore forward, hit two of them when the game was tied with a minute left. They join UConn and Florida Atlantic in the national semifinals.

Men's Basketball Ends Historic Season in Elite Eight Thriller (GoCreighton.com)

Center in Louisville, Ky. The Bluejays end their season in the Elite Eight with a 24-13 record. With the win, San Diego State (31-6) advances to the Final Four ...

This is two games in a row in the last two days that the ball was in his hands at the critical moments. For Coach as well as the student-athletes, this is the first time that San Diego State has ever made it to the Final Four, and it's the first time that the Mountain West has ever been represented. Coach, so in the first half Nathan Mensah was kind of having a little trouble guarding Kalkbrenner, but then in the second half he came out and had one of the best defensive halves that he has had in this tournament. Were you just feeling like if you had the ball and had the chance that you were going to take it, or was it called, or what? Just how much confidence does that give you at this stage of the season that you are able to have those guys come in and you can turn it to just about anybody on your bench as you are heading into the Final Four? After you missed the first one and you are getting ready to shoot the second one, you take a deep breath and exhale, which you don't normally do, I don't think. Coach, before the game we saw you talking to Coach McDermott and embracing before the game started. Not to say it's easy to get there or that we would ever get there, but we're there now, and we're going to go and try to win the thing. This was the most adversity that was -- in my coaching career that was ever thrown at a good team, a team that really had to do special things. Coach, I know that the way that the season went this year, this is obviously not the way that you wanted it to end. Sometimes what you decide to do is right; sometimes what you decide to do is wrong. Just describe to me what was going through your head throughout all of the reviews and all the time you guys spent waiting on the end result.

NCAA men's basketball: Miami, San Diego State round out Final Four (pressherald.com)

Miami rallies from a 13-point halftime deficit against Texas, and San Diego State edges Creighton on a free throw with 1.2 seconds left.

With the game tied at 56-all on San Diego State’s final possession, Trammell drove toward the free-throw line, elevated for the shot and was fouled by Creighton’s Ryan Nembhard. Officials reviewed the play and determined that time had expired, and the celebration was on for the Aztecs. “I wasn’t given an explanation other than there was no time on the clock,” Creighton Coach Greg McDermott said. The Longhorns revealed about 90 minutes before tipoff that Dylan Disu, the Big 12 tourney MVP and early star of the NCAA Tournament, would miss the game because of a foot injury. When Rice answered at the other end for Texas, Miller calmly made two go-ahead free throws to begin his late-game parade to the line. Without their 6-foot-9 star, the Longhorns’ deep group of dangerous guards resorted to shots from the perimeter against Miami’s porous defense. “These guys, more than any group I’ve worked with in 32 years of coaching, have really embodied, in terms of staying the course, being a team,” Terry said, choking up so hard on the postgame dais that he could barely speak. After Miami climbed back from a 64-51 deficit with 13:22 to play, the game was tied at 79-all when Norchad Omier was fouled while going for a loose ball. Carr led the Longhorns (29-9) with 17 points, though he was bothered by a hamstring injury late in the game. — On the eve of Miami playing for a place in its first Final Four, the quiet conversation floating through the team hotel did not revolve around all that the Hurricanes had accomplished this season. Miller responded with a perfect performance against second-seeded Texas in the Midwest Region final Sunday. “How hard we fought to come back in this game, especially on a stage like this, it’s an amazing feeling,” said Pack, one of Miami’s newcomers.

Explaining what happened at the end of the San Diego State ... (NCAA.com)

The third game of 2023's men's basketball Elite Eight between No. 5 San Diego State and No. 6 Creighton was a thriller through the very end.

Referees had to go old school and manually start the clock. As you'll see below, the ball tipped off of the SDSU and Creighton big men's hands and went back into the air, but the clock remained at 1.2 seconds. Down one with 1.2 seconds to play, Creighton had to inbound from underneath the opposite basket. With only a 2.4-second difference between the shot clock and game clock, Lamont Butler dribbled out the first 24 seconds of the shot clock. Then, the Aztecs inbounded on the sideline with 34.2 to play. There were a number of close calls during the final minute that were pivotal to deciding the game.

“The transfers come in, they have to have a culture to come to. Now, for a spot in the national championship game, Dutcher and company must take down ninth-seeded Florida Atlantic, which has four transfers averaging more than 15 minutes per game during its unprecedented run to Houston’s NRG Stadium. During a season where parity has reigned supreme, it’s fitting that fifth-seeded San Diego State reached the Final Four with a roster that reflects college basketball’s changing landscape. One scenario which has been discussed a lot is the Pac-12 adding San Diego State and SMU. Last but not least: If San Diego State wins its Final Four national semifinal on Saturday against Florida Atlantic, thereby earning a spot in next Monday’s national championship game, does that meaningfully change any parts of this equation? We’re not going to presume that the sequencing of actions is obvious — it isn’t — but what is clear is that San Diego State has given the Pac-12 a more attractive poker chip to use in various negotiations and discussions. If Gonzaga does not reconsider Pac-12 membership as a basketball-only member, expansion would run through schools which would join in both hoops and football.
