It is no wonder that the scourge of drugs continues unabated in this country. How do we not consider not only the drug and weapons trafficking between us and Mexico, but also the fundamental need for a trusting, collaborative and mutually beneficial relationship with a direct neighbor of highest priority?

Conservation group inspires passion for protecting whales at lagoon ... (FOX 11 Los Angeles)

At San Ignacio Lagoon in Mexico, the California gray whales approach boats, allowing people to touch them.

"It's a really unique interaction where it is occurring 100% on the whales' terms. Carlos Tomas Varela has been a guide on the lagoon for nearly 30 years. Pantukhoff said the area was nearly destroyed by a desalination plant, "that would have killed the entire desert ecosystem." San Ignacio Lagoon is one of two lagoons designated as a part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of their importance to the whale, seal and sea lion populations. In 1998, Pantukhoff directed a film called "Gray Magic," exposing the damaging effects of the plant. The gray whale is now called the friendliest whale in the world, a far cry from its old nickname the devil fish — as the whales were known to overturn whaling boats.

CITES is the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, signed by 184 countries; it regulates trade and protection for protected species. But in reality, the government’s protection efforts have been uneven, at best, and face often violent opposition from local fishermen. Mexico’s plan lists establishing “alternative fishing techniques” to gillnet fishing as one its top priorities. The shy, elusive porpoises can neither be held nor bred in captivity. The trade ban will not affect commercial seafood species like fish or shrimp, though some groups are pushing for such broader bans. CITES said in a statement that it “communicates to parties the recommendation to suspend all commercial trade in specimens of CITES-listed species with Mexico.”

The totoaba is protected under Mexican law but is fished illegally for use in Asia in traditional medicine.

Earlier this month eight vessels were observed illegally fishing in the protected area, while 38 vessels were likely fishing illegally in the Vaquita Refuge surrounding it. Parties to CITES have warned Mexico for years that it must increase enforcement and remove deadly fishing nets from the vaquita’s habitat. “While no one relishes economically painful sanctions, all other efforts to push Mexico to save the vaquita haven’t been enough,” said Sarah Uhlemann, international program director at the Center for Biological Diversity. “For decades, the international community has been urging, imploring, and begging Mexico to meet its legal obligations. While some progress has been made, illegal fishing in the vaquita’s habitat continues, including in the Zero Tolerance Area, where only enforcement and research vessels are permitted. “This CITES decision throws a lifeline to the world’s most endangered marine mammal. The CITES sanctions suspend all trade with Mexico on any wildlife and plant species listed under the international trade agreement, signed by 184 countries. Mexico will no longer be able to commercially export millions of dollars of wildlife products to most nations around the globe.

[Majahuitas cove in Puerto Vallarta, one of the most peaceful places in Mexico](https://www.vallartadaily.com/majahuitas-cove-in-puerto-vallarta-one-of-the-most-peaceful-places-in-mexico/)Puerto Vallarta (PVDN) – Majahuitas is a small, secluded cove located on the southern coast of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. The vaquita is only found in the Gulf of California, and it is estimated that there may be as few as eight individuals left in the wild. Conservation groups have been pressuring the Mexican government to take stronger action to protect the vaquita, and international organizations like CITES have threatened sanctions against Mexico for not doing enough. It’s up to us to ensure that the vaquita has a future in our oceans. This species is an important part of the Gulf of California’s ecosystem and losing it would have devastating consequences. The Mexican government has taken some measures to protect the vaquita, such as implementing a ban on gillnet use in the vaquita’s habitat, but these efforts have been insufficient. One of the main threats to the vaquita’s survival is illegal fishing practices. While the ruling is considered an unequal treatment of Mexico, the country is open to discussing observations and resolving them satisfactorily. Mexico’s administration has been reluctant to spend money to compensate fishermen for staying out of the vaquita refuge and to stop using gill nets. The activist group Sea Shepherd has joined the Mexican Navy in patrols to deter the fishermen and to help destroy gill nets, which have successfully reduced gillnet fishing. The ruling sets a precedent, and the sanctions could potentially make it challenging for Mexico to export certain animal and plant products.

CITES sanctions Mexico for failure to stomp out illegal fishing ... (SeafoodSource)

CITES has announced sanctions against Mexico for its failure to take action to protect the critically endangered vaquita porpoise.

“Mexico is rightly facing the consequences of its failure to control illegal fishing that is causing the vaquita’s extinction,” Smith said. But the administration Mexico President Andrés Manuel López has largely refused to spend money to compensate fishermen for staying out of the vaquita refuge and to stop using gill-nets, “The Mexican government believes the country is being treated unfairly in that its efforts – publicly recognized by CITES – are not being taken into account. CITES said Mexico has not proven it is capable or willing to enforce the plan, according to the press release. A Romantic Mexico City Dinner to Toast a Growing Fashion Brand (The New York Times)

How the designer Olivia Villanti, of the line Chava Studio, threw a party and a collection launch that felt sophisticated yet low key.

For Villanti, stepping back every so often for a few quiet minutes in a dark corner was “a great way to recharge and be more present,” she says. Arrangements of eucalyptus and silver dollar wreathed in mauve clusters of amaranth were deliberately sparse — there were only three on the table — so as not to obstruct sightlines or conversation. Villanti prefers to invest her time, whenever possible, in the elements of her work that energize her. She hoped to incorporate into women’s clothing “these elements that belonged, traditionally, to the world of men’s tailoring,” she says, “these small details” — like double vents on jackets, or functional cuffs — “that women just don’t get.” Since that first collection, Villanti, who handles the brand’s design, sourcing and customer service and works closely with a team of seamstresses out of As the sun set around 6:30, Villanti and Guevara opened the doors at Proyecto Público Prim, an early 20th-century mansion in the central neighborhood of Colonia Juarez. When the couple returned home to Mexico City, where Guevara, 41, grew up and where they moved in 2020 after 16 years together in New York, Villanti, also 41, unpacked several duffels of old clothes and began designing the latest (and largest) collection for her nearly three-year-old made-to-order women’s wear line,

While today, Mexico City’s reputation as a natural wine capital is indisputable, it’s not a stretch to say Nazas played a pivotal role in spreading the word. When I moved to Mexico City five years ago, Nazas was my introduction to the capital’s natural wine scene, which was booming even then. Walking along Calle Bucareli with a group of friends, I’d soon arrive at the spot: an unmarked concrete garage at the foot of an office building, the official-unofficial location of Nazas.
