SDSU reaches Final Four with wild finish against Creighton (ESPN)

San Diego State advanced to its first Final Four on Sunday amid a final frenzy and officiating ambiguity, grinding out a 57-56 victory over Creighton.

[Lamont Butler](http://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/player/_/id/4433183/lamont-butler) led San Diego State with 18 points on 8-for-11 shooting, the only player who consistently found a rhythm on Sunday. "But it was just a war of attrition, and we came out on top." In a town where photo finishes at Churchill Downs are part of the lore, this was a basketball version. Dutcher held a black marker and clipboard in his hands, and he appeared momentarily surprised as the celebration began around him. "Two teams played their tails off, and officiating is part of the game," McDermott said. [Ryan Nembhard](http://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/player/_/id/4433629/ryan-nembhard) slumped at his locker as he attempted to sum up the pain of being on the wrong end of the game-deciding call in No. An NCAA statement after the game said officials "ruled the clock hit zero before the ball touched out of bounds" and time expired. He declined to comment when asked directly about the call on Nembhard, which could have been considered the type of play officials had let go throughout a rugged game. But the Bluejays sputtered offensively in the second half -- shooting just 27.6% -- and never found a way to pull ahead over that stretch. The officials never made a determination of who the ball last touched, as Creighton's One of them also will be a first-time partaker in the national title game next Monday night. "It was a great game," Nembhard said.

Men's Basketball Ends Historic Season in Elite Eight Thriller (GoCreighton.com)

Center in Louisville, Ky. The Bluejays end their season in the Elite Eight with a 24-13 record. With the win, San Diego State (31-6) advances to the Final Four ...

This is two games in a row in the last two days that the ball was in his hands at the critical moments. For Coach as well as the student-athletes, this is the first time that San Diego State has ever made it to the Final Four, and it's the first time that the Mountain West has ever been represented. Coach, so in the first half Nathan Mensah was kind of having a little trouble guarding Kalkbrenner, but then in the second half he came out and had one of the best defensive halves that he has had in this tournament. Were you just feeling like if you had the ball and had the chance that you were going to take it, or was it called, or what? Just how much confidence does that give you at this stage of the season that you are able to have those guys come in and you can turn it to just about anybody on your bench as you are heading into the Final Four? After you missed the first one and you are getting ready to shoot the second one, you take a deep breath and exhale, which you don't normally do, I don't think. Coach, before the game we saw you talking to Coach McDermott and embracing before the game started. Not to say it's easy to get there or that we would ever get there, but we're there now, and we're going to go and try to win the thing. This was the most adversity that was -- in my coaching career that was ever thrown at a good team, a team that really had to do special things. Coach, I know that the way that the season went this year, this is obviously not the way that you wanted it to end. Sometimes what you decide to do is right; sometimes what you decide to do is wrong. Just describe to me what was going through your head throughout all of the reviews and all the time you guys spent waiting on the end result.

Explaining what happened at the end of the San Diego State ... (NCAA.com)

The third game of 2023's men's basketball Elite Eight between No. 5 San Diego State and No. 6 Creighton was a thriller through the very end.

Referees had to go old school and manually start the clock. As you'll see below, the ball tipped off of the SDSU and Creighton big men's hands and went back into the air, but the clock remained at 1.2 seconds. Down one with 1.2 seconds to play, Creighton had to inbound from underneath the opposite basket. With only a 2.4-second difference between the shot clock and game clock, Lamont Butler dribbled out the first 24 seconds of the shot clock. Then, the Aztecs inbounded on the sideline with 34.2 to play. There were a number of close calls during the final minute that were pivotal to deciding the game.

The finish was ironic as San Diego State lost to Creighton 72-69 in overtime in last year's first round of the NCAA Tournament. San Diego State later was inbounding the ball from the side in its backcourt with 34.2 seconds left. Aguek Arop scored back-to-back baskets in a 55-second span to give the Aztecs a 54-50 edge with 3:04 remaining. "You want your team to come close to reaching your potential. Just having that confidence that, yeah, I missed the first one, but I definitely wasn't going to miss the second one." I think we could have done a little bit more to make it a game that didn't have to go down to that, but it's a tough way to lose." You work so hard all year, and it comes down to a play like that," Nembhard said. Arthur Kaluma and Baylor Scheierman added 12 points apiece for the Bluejays. "We're making the next step, and it's something we've always talked about," Dutcher said. Lamont Butler scored 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting and Trammell added 12 points as the fifth-seeded Aztecs (31-6) followed their Friday takedown of No. "I'm sure there were people that doubted we could do it, but we never doubted for a minute. San Diego State edges Creighton, earns first Final Four trip ... (Chattanooga Times Free Press)

Darrion Trammell had shot enough free throws in practice to believe at least one would fall when it mattered.

The Aztecs held the Crimson Tide and Creighton to a combined 5-of-44 (.114) from 3-point range, the best such defensive percentage ever in a regional weekend for a team that advanced to the Final Four. They shared a round-trip flight to Hawaii last fall for the Maui Invitational, and there were no dustups during a tight, physical game in which no team led by more than eight points. The Aztecs, who got this far thanks to defense and physical play, held them to 23 second-half points on 28% shooting. In the final seconds of the East final, Trammell dribbled from the perimeter and elevated for the potential winning shot. "I feel like I've shot probably a thousand free throws in the last week," said Trammell, who was named the region's most outstanding player. Baylor Scheierman threw the ensuing inbound pass the length of the floor, San Diego State's Aguek Arop and Creighton's Arthur Kaluma both jumped for it, and the ball deflected out of bounds.

San Diego State muscles past Creighton, makes 1st Final Four (WOKV)

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — (AP) — Darrion Trammell had shot enough free throws in practice to believe at least one would fall when it mattered.

San Diego State proved again that defense matters, especially since the Aztecs also scuffled for points. “I’ve done that a thousand times throughout the season, so it was just another shot for me,” Arop, who had six points, said of his go-ahead jumper. Before muscling past Creighton, San Diego State crafted a similar defensive masterwork against Alabama, the tournament's top overall seed. The teams didn't appear to share any hard feelings from last year's meeting. San Diego State’s Aguek Arop and Creighton's Arthur Kaluma both jumped for it and the ball deflected out of bounds. “I wasn’t given an explanation other than there was no time on the clock,” Creighton coach Greg McDermott said. I was just thinking, staying in rhythm, getting the shot up and putting my team up front.” “I feel like I’ve shot probably a thousand free throws in the last week," said Trammell, who was named the region's most outstanding player. Baylor Scheierman threw the ensuing inbound pass the length of the floor. Officials reviewed the play and determined that time had expired, and the celebration was on for the Aztecs. I'm sure there were people that doubted we could do it, but we never doubted for a minute. “Not to say it's easy to get there or that we would ever get there.
