Anthony Volpe Makes Yankees Roster at Shortstop (The New York Times)

Anthony Volpe, 21, grew up rooting for Derek Jeter. Making the Yankees' opening day roster after a hot preseason, Volpe will try to pick up where his idol ...

The challenge, Judge said, will be for the Yankees to stick with Volpe even if he struggles early. So if you’re a competitor and a gamer, the fans want that out of you. The Yankees drafted Volpe with their first-round pick, 30th overall, in the 2019 draft, swaying him from a commitment to Vanderbilt with a bonus of more than $2.7 million. Volpe insisted he did not pay much attention to the Yankees’ strategy; to him, he said, it felt “super, super out of my control,” which has helped him simply focus on improving. We’ve had a lot of conversations, and when we interact with each other, you can see that he’s here.” “Everything we kind of expected and hoped for, he’s looked the part,” Boone said after the game with the Twins. On Friday, after Minnesota’s Pablo López struck him out on a slider, Volpe hammered the same pitch over the center-field fence in his next at-bat. On Saturday, when his bloop hit skipped past the Philadelphia right fielder, Volpe dashed 270 feet — in 12.3 seconds — for a triple. That season ended in a championship, the first of five for Jeter. It could have been someone you never even see on TV, but they’re a part of the team and they probably got just as big a cheer.” Volpe, who has never played in the majors, earned the spot by hitting .314 with three homers, five steals and a 1.064 on-base plus slugging percentage through Sunday. Wherever he started in that giddy crowd of Yankees fans, he ended up in front.

Anthony Volpe has won New York Yankees' shortstop job. Here's ... (USA TODAY)

Nobody's expecting Anthony Volpe to be Derek Jeter, but for the first time in a more than a quarter century, the Yankees have a homegrown shortstop.

[Eduardo Núñez](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/n/nunezed02.shtml) largely kept the spot warm that year. [Gleyber Torres](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/t/torregl01.shtml), acquired from the Chicago Cubs in 2016, looked for a moment like he might be a star, but faltered after consecutive All-Star appearances in 2018 and ’19; he’s now at second base and eligible for free agency after next year. [Didi Gregorius](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/gregodi01.shtml), playing for his third team, was a sound Jeter replacement from 2015-19. But his career .881 OPS in the minor leagues shows that frame can generate power, and Volpe should continue to fill out for the next several years. His father is a urologist and his mother an anesthesiologist originally from the Philippines. The Yankees have gone 14 years since winning – even reaching – a World Series. He attended Jeter’s last All-Star Game at the old Yankee Stadium in 2014 and wore No. Had he not snatched the position decisively this spring, as Turner landed in Philly, Correa back in Minnesota and Bogaerts in San Diego, leaving a potentially large serving of Kiner-Falefa this year, a Yankee season already clouded by pitching injuries might seem even less certain. Yet Steinbrenner always held firm that the club liked its prospects, a hardly veiled reference to Peraza and more specifically Volpe. The nod was well-earned over a couple of months in Tampa: Volpe batted .314, got on base at a .417 clip and slugged three homers in Grapefruit League play. And that alone speaks both for the Yankees’ hopes for the young man and his potential to fulfill them. It was a grim juxtaposition – the big-money Yankees saying no thanks, over the years, to Francisco Lindor, Carlos Correa, Corey Seager, Javy Baez, Trevor Story, Trea Turner and Xander Bogaerts, even as their club was obviously not good enough to win a World Series.

Top Yankees prospect Anthony Volpe makes Opening Day roster (ESPN)

Top prospect Anthony Volpe, 21, will start at shortstop on Opening Day, becoming the youngest Yankees shortstop since Derek Jeter debuted at 20.

"It was a once-in-a-lifetime chance to get into the organization," Volpe said. "He just dominated all sides of the ball during February and March, and that bodes well, obviously, for him as we move forward." While Peraza struggled, Volpe thrived and received the support of teammates who were smitten by not only his talent but his maturity. During his first full season in 2021, Volpe established himself as one of the best prospects in baseball, and he followed it with a standout 2022 that ended at Triple-A. 3 overall prospect in MLB, according to ESPN's Kiley McDaniel, Volpe joined the Yankees out of the Delbarton School in Morristown, New Jersey, as the 30th pick of the 2019 draft. "My heart was beating pretty hard," Volpe said.
