The Zags started off like they had a Vegas hangover, firing off two air-balled 3-pointers and a wild runner by Timme. The UConn big man picked apart Gonzaga’s double-teams for five first-half assists, including two for layups. “UConn was just terrific tonight and we didn’t have any answers, especially when kind of everything really didn’t bounce our way,” Gonzaga coach Mark Few said. “They didn’t ask me to be anybody but myself.” “The climb to get to this point has been real and it's been more challenging than I thought." Karaban hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to put the Huskies up 39-32 at halftime, and it got worse for Gonzaga to start the second half. [Jordan Hawkins](http://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/player/_/id/4683750/jordan-hawkins) scored 20 points and UConn overwhelmed its fourth straight NCAA Tournament opponent, earning its first trip to the Final Four in nine years with an 82-54 blowout of Gonzaga on Saturday night.

The Huskies were mostly in control from start to finish as they advance to the Final Four.
That was Alex Karaban’s second three of the day to get him to 10 at the break as he finished with 12. It was another dominant performance but particularly special to happen in the Elite Eight. The first half started slowly but the Huskies pulled away after getting past a cold shooting start, particularly from behind the arc.
Gonzaga's Drew Timme picked up his fourth foul early in the second half and Connecticut steamrolled its way to a Final Four date with Texas or Miami.
UConn turned to Dan Hurley, the son of legendary New Jersey high school coach Bob Hurley, who had led Rhode Island to consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. The Huskies, who beat Arkansas by 23 points in the Sweet 16, now head to the Final Four as the prohibitive favorites to win the national title. After struggling early in Big East play and losing six out of eight games during one stretch in January, UConn entered the NCAA Tournament as one of the hottest teams in the country. [senior big man and leading scorer Drew Timme](https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/college/columnist/dan-wolken/2023/03/25/gonzaga-drew-timme-elite-8/11539932002/) picked up his third and fourth fouls within the first 2½ minutes of the second half, [Gonzaga’s hopes quickly cratered](https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaab/2023/03/25/march-madness-bracket-updates-elite-8-updates-final-four/11539972002/). With Timme on the bench, UConn attacked relentlessly on both ends of the floor and expanded its seven-point halftime lead to 60-37 in fewer than six minutes. After Ollie followed that run with four disappointing seasons and an NCAA investigation that found multiple rules violations, UConn hit the reset button in hopes of recapturing its dominance of the Northeast corridor that Hall of Fame coach Jim Calhoun built in the 1990s and early 2000s.
The UConn men's basketball team, led by another impressive effort by Andre Jackson, crushed No. 3 seed Gonzaga and heads to the Final Four.
Even when something didn’t go right for the Huskies in the second half, like when Jackson struggled to collect an alley-oop pass from Calcaterra on a three-on-one fast break, Clingan was there to put it in. Few had no choice but to put his three-time All-American on the bench and, for three minutes and 15 seconds without Timme in the paint, UConn went on a 14-3 scoring run and built a 21-point lead with 25 minutes to go. Twenty-six seconds into the second half, Newton set up in front of a driving Timme and drew the charge, Timme’s third foul of the game. The clock continued to wind down and when there was six seconds left, Sanogo set a high ball screen for Newton and rolled to the rim. The Huskies had the same fortune twice in a minute-long stretch before Zags head coach Mark Few switched Timme into man-to-man coverage on Sanogo and focused one of his forwards out on Jackson. In the beginning, UConn had to figure out its offense, how it’d handle the way Timme defended the middle of the court, leaving Jackson uncovered to have an extra big on Sanogo.
