UConn destroys Drew Timme, Gonzaga to punch first Final Four ... (USA TODAY)

Gonzaga's Drew Timme picked up his fourth foul early in the second half and Connecticut steamrolled its way to a Final Four date with Texas or Miami.

UConn turned to Dan Hurley, the son of legendary New Jersey high school coach Bob Hurley, who had led Rhode Island to consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. The Huskies, who beat Arkansas by 23 points in the Sweet 16, now head to the Final Four as the prohibitive favorites to win the national title. After struggling early in Big East play and losing six out of eight games during one stretch in January, UConn entered the NCAA Tournament as one of the hottest teams in the country. [senior big man and leading scorer Drew Timme](https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/college/columnist/dan-wolken/2023/03/25/gonzaga-drew-timme-elite-8/11539932002/) picked up his third and fourth fouls within the first 2½ minutes of the second half, [Gonzaga’s hopes quickly cratered](https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaab/2023/03/25/march-madness-bracket-updates-elite-8-updates-final-four/11539972002/). With Timme on the bench, UConn attacked relentlessly on both ends of the floor and expanded its seven-point halftime lead to 60-37 in fewer than six minutes. After Ollie followed that run with four disappointing seasons and an NCAA investigation that found multiple rules violations, UConn hit the reset button in hopes of recapturing its dominance of the Northeast corridor that Hall of Fame coach Jim Calhoun built in the 1990s and early 2000s.

UConn demolishes Gonzaga to reach 1st Final Four in 9 years (ESPN)

UConn blew past its fourth straight NCAA tournament opponent, earning its first trip to the Final Four in nine years with an 82-54 blowout of Gonzaga.

"We should be going to the Final Four." They were the better team tonight." But the bottom line is they were the better team tonight. And they ran over Gonzaga in ending the college career of All-American forward The Huskies became the 10th team to win each of its first four NCAA tournament games by at least 15 points, joining the 2004 Huskies, who won the title. Hurley instead ripped the twine from the hoop, raised it as a trophy and grabbed the rim with both hands, shaking it in equal parts anger and ecstasy.

For the third year in a row, an emotional win against UCLA is followed by a Gonzaga loss. Gonzaga ended the game shooting two for 20 from deep, 20 for 60 from the field and 55% from the line. UCONN’s Karaban scored on a floater, a Strawther missed trey was followed by UCONN making one from deep and the lead was extended to 12. UCONN just rolled for the rest of the second half. Few inserted Sallis, Smith and Gregg during the first media time-out and the Gonzaga offense did look better taking their first lead 22-21. As with UCLA, Hickman and Bolton were ineffective in the first half going one for six from the field.

The Zags started off like they had a Vegas hangover, firing off two air-balled 3-pointers and a wild runner by Timme. “UConn was just terrific tonight and we didn’t have any answers, especially when kind of everything really didn’t bounce our way,” Gonzaga coach Mark Few said. The UConn big man picked apart Gonzaga’s double-teams for five first-half assists, including two for layups. “But it's hard when Drew goes out.” “The climb to get to this point has been real and it's been more challenging than I thought." “They didn’t ask me to be anybody but myself.” UConn pushed the lead to 12 and Timme picked up his third and fourth fouls in the opening 2 1/2 minutes — one on a charge, another on a box-out under the rim. The Zags shot 33% from the field — 7 of 29 in the second half — and went 2 for 20 from 3 to stumble in their bid for a third Final Four since 2017. Gonzaga allowed UConn to go on a late run to lead by seven at halftime and fell completely apart after All-American Drew Timme went to the bench with his fourth foul early in the second half. UConn controlled the usually efficient Bulldogs at both ends in the West Region final, building a 23-point lead early in the second half to waltz right into the final section of the bracket.

The critique of the University of Connecticut men's basketball program under coach Dan Hurley had been its inability to win in March.

The Bulldogs started off like they had a Vegas hangover, firing off two air-balled 3-pointers and a wild runner by Timme. The UConn big man picked apart Gonzaga's double-team defense for five first-half assists, including two for layups. "UConn was just terrific tonight, and we didn't have any answers, especially when kind of everything really didn't bounce our way," Gonzaga coach Mark Few said. "The climb to get to this point has been real, and it's been more challenging than I thought." "We've got a lot to prove," said Andre Jackson Jr., who had eight points, 10 assists and nine rebounds. "They didn't ask me to be anybody but myself."

Expectations were low it would happen this year, so making the Elite Eight was a win in itself. “I don’t think anybody thought we would make it this far this year," Timme said. That came after he was whistled for a charge just 26 seconds into the half. “I think he’s one of the greatest college players in this modern era,” coach Mark Few said. I’m forever in debt for Gonzaga, just the love I have for just everyone that helped me and made this journey so special and so fun. It was a blast to coach him.” “I’m just so thankful that the program and the place took me for who I was,” Timme said. “You try to stay positive,” Bulldogs forward Anton Watson said. “He’s won at the highest level. He sniffled as the postgame news conference was about to begin. “But that’s just a small piece of it. Timme, who gained fame for his masterful inside moves and world-class mustache, put together perhaps the finest college career in recent memory.

Drew Timme watched with foul trouble as Connecticut erupted at the start of the second half and ran away with a 82-54 win over Gonzaga.

“But I don’t think we were — obviously surprised by the margin of victory, but not surprised about where we’re going next because this is who we’ve been for a large part of the season.” He finishes his college career with 2,307 points and 301 points in the NCAA tournament. UConn forward Adama Sanogo was held to 3 of 11 from the field, but he made all four free throws to finish with a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double. The Huskies’ largest cushion in the second half was 33 points, with 3 minutes, 48 seconds to go. Bolton was 2 of 7 from the field for six points. Going 50% from the (free throw) line and 2 for 20 on threes. But the bottom line is they were the better team tonight. We were trying to stay locked in and trail him on pin downs but he was getting loose. And in transition they were running. 10 Observations from Gonzaga's loss to UConn (The Slipper Still Fits)

Gonzaga had just won against UCLA late in the game in an emotionally taxing battle. They would then play a team that absolutely obliterated their previous ...

Last night’s shocking disappointment is only because of the work this group of guys put in for the last two months. How Few and company approach next season is going to show us what the next chapter of Gonzaga basketball is going to look like for years to come. Their year did not end on a high and in disappointing fashion for them, but it was those same guys that reached an Elite Eight game and took an 18th-ranked team in KenPom’s analytics all the way up to sixth before last night’s game. It’s tough to find positives from last night’s game, but Gregg’s fight coming in and defending one of the best post players in the country and a future great big in Clingan was worthy of attention. He had the best defensive rating of anyone on the team (albeit at 109, still over 100 which is unideal) and was the most effective rebounder on the floor for Gonzaga. It became evident in the UCLA and TCU games that Malachi Smith was dialed in and the most assertive guard the Zags had. It was clear from the first two minutes of that game that the officials were going to emphasize Timme’s footwork throughout the game, calling him on two travel calls and subject to two off-ball touch fouls throughout the game. He was not subbed in until the 13:30 mark of the first half. Again, The UConn Huskies were the best team in that arena but the three referees on the court undoubtedly did not help the situation. From the lack of scoring around him to the most anticlimactic foul trouble imaginable, the environment of last night’s game undercut the best post-scoring big man in the modern era of college basketball. Gonzaga having one of its worse shooting games was something they could not afford against the hottest team in the country. In a game that could have used the console getting unplugged and reset, Gonzaga was absolutely dominated and trounced in the Elite Eight by the UConn Huskies, losing 82-54.
