Worth, Houston, Austin, and San Antonio—while providing the necessary infrastructure to hold a rally of this magnitude." According to the Chronicle, Trump's campaign has insisted that his visit to Waco is "purely coincidental." "The Proud Boys and other anti-government extremists with a propensity for violence took him seriously on that ignominious day" the paper continued. "The GOP-friendly city of Waco—Trump won McLennan County by more than 20 percentage points in 2020—has every right, of course, to host a former president, the leading contender for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination," the editorial said, "but 'Waco' the symbol ... and sacked the Capitol," the Chronicle wrote regarding Trump's calls for protests this week. Donald Trump’s short time in the White House was a disaster for hard working Texas families and we are confident that, if he is the Republican nominee in 2024, our state will reject his failed vision.” “He has expressed skepticism and outright hostility toward the federal government, the deep state,” Flavin said. I look forward to welcoming him and his many Central Texas supporters on Saturday.” Holland said the Trump campaign did not ask the local Republican Party to assist with the rally, but that Republicans here are looking forward to Trump’s arrival and would help if needed. Trump is stoking the fires of Waco (Editorial) (Houston Chronicle)

Former President Donald Trump is holding a rally as a 2024 presidential candidate in Waco, which carries great symbolic value to anti-government extremists.

Debated to this day is the question of [whether the candidate’s paean](https://www.nytimes.com/2007/11/09/opinion/09brooks.html) to states’ rights, combined with his failure to mention the martyred trio, represents an early example of what has come to be called dog-whistle politics — in other words, conveying a subtle message for those with ears to hear, while maintaining plausible deniability. Ronald Reagan — “appearing in an open-necked shirt and red clay-stained shoes,” a local reporter noted — assured a mostly white crowd that day that he was a firm believer in “states’ rights,” an oft-used code in the South in those days for racial segregation and discrimination. On a sultry Sunday afternoon in August, 1980, the Republican nominee for president of the United States chose the Neshoba County Fair outside the little town of Philadelphia, Miss., for his first major campaign speech.
