3-seed Gonzaga rallies past 2-seed UCLA, advances to Elite 8 (ESPN)

Julian Strawther hit a 3-pointer with 6 seconds left, lifting Gonzaga to a wild 79-76 NCAA tournament win over UCLA in the Sweet 16.

"This is my city," he screamed to the crowd in the postgame celebration. "It was a clean look," he said. It felt like a movie, you know?" "Literally, when you're a kid, you dream of making a shot like that. And yeah, Morrison was in Las Vegas on Thursday, calling the game on the radio. Strawther asked if he could shoot the ball if it came to him. "I'm not speechless too much, and I'm pretty speechless after that. It really felt like a movie." Especially on the 17-year anniversary to the day of the infamous Adam Morrison-inconsolable-on-the-court Sweet 16 game in Oakland, California, where the Bruins scored the final 11 points to break Gonzaga's hearts. And Gonzaga, which trailed at halftime 46-33 only to take a 10-point lead (72-62) with 2:30 to play, found itself behind 76-75 with 12 seconds to play. 3-seeded Bulldogs a white-knuckle [79-76 victory](/mens-college-basketball/boxscore/_/gameId/401522186) over No. 4 [UConn](/mens-college-basketball/team/_/id/41/uconn-huskies).

10 Observations from Gonzaga's win over UCLA (The Slipper Still Fits)

- We’ve talked about the need for Gonzaga to go on one or two defensive runs per game if they’re not gonna be one of the top defensive teams in the country (the first half very much confirmed that is not a possibility), and they absolutely pulled off the defensive run in the middle of the second half. Things turned around for Gonzaga when Sallis and Smith checked in and it would have been coaching malpractice not to roll with them for the rest of the game notwithstanding the last minute situational substitutions. - It will be easy to miss, but Hunter Sallis put together a very impactful game when Gonzaga really needed solutions in the backcourt off the bench. - You don’t see too many games with a rebounding disparity as large as the one between these teams (50-26) and that results in such a tight game. The guards repeatedly failed to keep Tyger Campbell bottled up and in front of them and the team as a whole played as if they had never seen a ball screen before. To be completely clear, I am not at all complaining about Timme going nuclear, especially when it looked like no one was ready to step up to be the secondary scorer, but it felt like that’s what happened in this one.

Fast-forward 53 years and it’s likely that in the same situation Kawhi Leonard or Anthony Davis would sit out the game due to “load management.” Ramsey celebrated the move as the Rams continued to restructure their roster.
