Follow along here for live updates from Detroit News contributor Matthew Scheidel, as Michigan State takes on Kansas State in the NCAA Tournament.

-2H 15:31: If it wasn't for a bunch of missed KSU free throws, MSU would be down by double digits at the moment. It lost in the 2014 Elite Eight to eventual national champion UConn, and lost earlier this season to Rutgers, among other losses at MSG. -1H MSU shooting a little bit better and KSU has cooled off a bit. The rest of the team? -2H MSU is taking advantage of Nowell being on the bench. Six early points on a couple of 3's. Tyson Walker with a huge 3 to stop the bleeding. Nowell just came back in, but MSU went on an 11-2 run while he was on the bench. It was pretty surprising that MSU made it to the Sweet 16. It was a great game overall, but MSU just didn't have enough in the tank. MSU about to got to the free throw line, the question whether it'll be shooting two or three free thows. Hauser missed the front end of a 1-and-1 and then Akins travelled.

Michigan State basketball falls in Sweet 16 to Kansas State, 98-93 ... (Detroit Free Press)

Markquis Nowell had 20 points and an NCAA tournament-record 19 assists as No. 3 seed Kansas State beat the seventh-seeded Spartans, 98-93.

But MSU maintained a 60-59 lead thanks to an Akins 3-pointer after Walker outraced the gimpy Nowell for an offensive rebound and Hall sliced through the interior for a layup. Hoggard hit a pair of free throws with 3:25 to play to cut it back to a two-point deficit. With the shot clock winding down, Nowell launched a deep 3-pointer and turned away, thinking it would fall like the last time he did that. Tomlin slipped through the back line of MSU’s defense for a layup to give Kansas State a 77-70 lead. After a Johnson bucket for KSU, Hoggard started attacking off the dribble and hit a pair of layups and got fouled on each for five straight points to give MSU a 55-52 lead with 13:11 to go. Kansas State’s Carter answering with a 3 at the other end of the floor. Hall hit a hook shot in the paint, then Akins soared for a tip-in to tie it. "They knew we needed a 3 to tie the game up, and they just played it really well," Walker said. Johnson’s dunk with 56.2 seconds left in OT gave KSU the lead for good as Hall split a pair of free throws with 42.8 to go. "They played a tremendous game on the offensive end and defensive end," Nowell said. The Spartans had a chance to tie the game after Massoud’s bucket, but they couldn’t get off a shot despite Walker and Joey Hauser bypassing looks. Every cliché imaginable for a big game in the big city on the big stage at Madison Square Garden.

DT: And the state of Michigan well-represented in the men's college hockey tournament. And right now they have as good a chance as anybody to win the NCAA title. But she's got a great record at Michigan State and she's won Big Ten titles in 2011 and 2014 and gone to ten NCAA tournaments. And on Friday, Michigan Tech takes on Penn State in Pennsylvania. How strong of a case does Naurato have for keeping the job long-term? In the NCAA men's basketball tournament, Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo is in familiar territory. The University of Michigan will take on Colgate in Allentown, Pennsylvania Friday. U of M is the third seed overall. The Wildcats are a 3-seed and had a big year under new head coach Jerome Tang. Coach Juwan Howard's win-loss records have been on a downward trend over the past couple of seasons. Furthermore, last point, Michigan State has got a whole lot more [alumni] in Manhattan than Kansas State does. DT: At Madison Square Garden in New York, the Spartans will take on Kansas State.

Markquis Nowell sets a tournament record with 19 assists, leading the third-seeded Wildcats to the East Region final.

The Razorbacks also reached the Elite Eight the past two years, and a third consecutive appearance would have been a first in program history. Arkansas answered with a 10-point run in just 27 seconds, but the outcome was never in doubt. They won their first two games by outscoring Iona and Saint Mary’s by a combined 86-49 in the second half. Joey Hauser added 18 points and Walker had 16, including a layup with 5 seconds left in regulation that forced the first overtime of this year’s NCAA Tournament. The Kansas State Wildcats won a classic prize fight against Michigan State, and now they have their eyes on an even bigger prize.

It was just working on what we do in practice, trying to execute at the end of the game." "But at the end of the day, coach Tang and his coaching staff, they'll preach going 'five to grind.' "When we sat down in the huddle, every one of them said, 'Hey, we don't lose in overtime.' They knew it. "He's a hell of a player. So I cut down, Quis (found) me and I just faded away and the rest is history." "I feel like I've got that in my bag," Massoud said of the two-point jumper. But it was a fade-away mid-range jumper that helped nail down the victory over the Spartans. "Now the next thing is really huge, whoever we have to play. "We've got to take a moment to soak this thing in before we move on to the next thing. Senior forward Keyontae Johnson, the Wildcats' other Big 12 all-conference selection and third-team All-American, scored a team-best 22 points, and Ismael Massoud knocked down a clutch jumper in the closing seconds of overtime. "It was like a 'Rocky' fight tonight," said Nowell, who scored 20 points and broke the NCAA Tournament single-game record with 19 assists for the Wildcats. 3 seed K-State persevered for a 98-93 overtime victory over Michigan State in the NCAA Tournament's East Regional semifinals at Madison Square Garden.

Michigan State basketball's last dream: 'I just wish we could play ... (Detroit Free Press)

Michigan State basketball traded big baskets all night with Kansas State in the NCAA tournament Sweet 16, bringing MSG to a fever pitch.

“But give (the Wildcats) credit, they made a couple plays at the end.” As Walker did that, Hall set a pick to free up Hauser, who caught the ball with 11 seconds, took a look at the rim but kicked it to Hall as the Wildcats’ Cam Carter closed quickly. You win this one, you got one more to get to the biggest stage that any of us probably would ever beyond. Refs said Hoggard got a piece of the shot, and the call was confirmed upon review, even though Hoggard did not think he touched the actual ball. Akins nearly traveled with the sideline inbound pass but delivered it to Walker, who curled off a double screen from Hauser and Hall. And the IQ, the feel that we have for each other, it just showed today.” What wasn’t fun for Izzo was seeing some of the mistakes made that ended up costing MSU a chance at an Elite Eight and possibly more. As Kansas State’s point guard barked at coach Jerome Tang on the sideline, forward Keyontae Johnson slipped behind Hoggard and caught a lob from Nowell while spinning for a reverse dunk that tied the game at 92-all with 56.2 seconds left and seized the momentum. And for Izzo, another teaching point for next season about how important the little details are — as the Spartans proved all season with a group that showed glimpses of talent coming together, often followed by regression. A success for a group few knew what to expect from before the season. “It just sucks that we couldn't end up on the winning column.” A fingertip on the ball at the wrong moment.

The Huskies had raced to an early 13-point lead while muscling to a 13-4 rebounding advantage, led by 15 at the half (outrebounding the Hogs 22-9) and never looked back. The Volunteers pulled to 5 down with just under four minutes left, but a layup by Nick Boyd, who grew up about 44 miles from the Garden in Garnerville, N.Y., put the Owls ahead, 57-50. But Gonzaga can play pretty good defense, too, and the Bulldogs tightened things up in the second half. For the most part, against everyone but Timme, U.C.L.A.’s defense dictated the tempo in the first half. in the final seconds. Before Thursday night, the last time Gonzaga and U.C.L.A. Post-Game Quotes: Kansas State (Michigan State Athletics)

TOM IZZO: I give a lot of credit to Kansas State. They made some big plays down the stretch. They made some big plays early. Been part of a lot of big wins, and ...

We've got to take a moment and just really soak this thing in before we move on to the next thing. We was going back and forth, back and forth, back and forth. And the IQ, the feel that we have for each other, it just showed today. His IQ, his feel for the game, he brings everybody confidence, and when he came back, I felt like it just -- everybody seen how he was trying to fight through his injury, and we just wanted to fight back for him. They got the belief in me to find me and get me shots and all I had to do was knock it down. But man, got to give credit to my teammates for holding it down when I was out and for battling.Q. We can look at the -- I can look at a million things that we did wrong. But this one was special, in front of my hometown, in front of the city that loves me. MARKQUIS NOWELL: Man, I just want to give all the honor and glory to the man himself for giving me this platform to showcase my talents and my gifts. The injuries -- everybody has injuries, but to have two main guys out when we didn't go fishing, it was probably -- it'll go down as one of the great years for me, not a good year. We executed the play pretty well, had a good look at it, passed it up, and then after that, it's tough to get a good look at it after that. It was really important to me when you've been in a league 40 years that you love and cherish and you know how good it is, and we can't get another National Championship.

Michigan State basketball: The ramblings of a sad Spartan fan (Spartan Avenue)

Not a lot of stats, just some thoughts, and feelings about a roller coaster of a season as Michigan State basketball played its last game.

In the moment, it’s hard to call the season a complete success because of what was potentially ahead in the tournament. Sometimes you must tip your cap and realize that it was just their day to have a good day. Every single starter with the exception of Desi Sills scored more than their average and a lot of that had to do with Michigan State having no answer for back-door cuts into easy layups, but not all of it. An inch too low or too high on more than a few of those passes and it turns into a turnover, which could have made all the difference on the scoreboard. Kansas State played at such a high level, that I was shocked that this game even went to overtime. That same Marquette team that committed the second-fewest turnovers in the Big East.

Michigan State Basketball: 3 potential 2023-24 lineup options (Yardbarker)

A.J. Hoggard/Jeremy Fears · Tyson Walker · Jaden Akins/Coen Carr/Gehrig Normand · Xavier Booker/Jaxon Kohler · Mady Sissoko/Carson Cooper.

The Packers need to add a tight end and at least one receiver on Day 1 or 2 of the draft. At the end of the day, Jackson has set a value for himself in terms of guarantees. That was important, again, just to continue to make up for some of the trades that the organization did before, to try to find a quarterback and continue to add good players in this draft.” The previous deals Poles is referring to happened four years apart. As the quarterback market continued to play out in the years following that record-breaking deal, it seemed to be a bargain from Kansas City’s perspective. It’s possible that the former NFL MVP wants to add a void year to the back end of any extension to make the deal look like it’s not fully guaranteed. General manager Ryan Poles pulled the trigger on the trade instead of risking the opportunity to pull a double trade with the Houston Texans and Panthers in the top ten of the draft for extra picks. He’s the complete antithesis of Mahomes committing to the Chiefs for a full decade. The Chicago Bears could trade back again The Chicago Bears made one franchise-altering trade for the 2023 NFL Draft when they swapped the number one overall pick to the Carolina Panthers. The Packers have to equip Jordan Love with as much as possible-especially with the departure of both Allen Lazard and Robert Tonyan; though the Packers have certainly surprised me in years past. This “Rodgers Watch” that seems to propagate the last few offseasons is back again, but will seemingly result in a departure; this time to the New York Jets. As far as the Packers go, if they do not acquire a receiver in this trade with NY, then I would be shocked if the team doesn’t target one in the draft. turn to the well that is the transfer portal.
