When winter ends: A guide to Monday's spring equinox (The Washington Post)

Monday's equinox is at 5:24 p.m. Eastern, heralding spring's arrival in the Northern Hemisphere · What happens on the vernal equinox? · Equal day and night? Not ...

(The only place this doesn’t hold true is near the North and South poles, where the sun is either rising or setting for the first time in six months.) For the West Coast, Rockies and northern Plains, temperatures this spring may end up close to the long-term average. After the summer solstice, the sun’s position in the sky retreats south, and the days will get shorter again. In [Anchorage](https://www.timeanddate.com/sun/usa/anchorage?month=3), the sun spends at least 5½ additional minutes above the horizon with each passing day. Near the equator, the sun is up for 12 hours 6 minutes, while Earth’s polar regions see about 12 hours 20 minutes of daylight. The date of the “equilux” — when sunrise and sunset are closest to 12 hours apart — occurs a few days before the equinox, on March 16 or 17 for most of the Lower 48 states. On the spring and autumnal equinoxes, however, both hemispheres receive [equal amounts](https://www.nesdis.noaa.gov/news/earth-orbit-vernal-equinox) of the sun’s energy. This optical illusion allows us to see the sun at sunrise and sunset when it’s technically below the horizon. [tilted on its axis](https://www.weather.gov/images/cle/Education/EarthOrbit.png) by about 23.5 degrees, the Northern and Southern hemispheres receive different amounts of sunlight throughout the year. For areas north of about 37°N, today is the equilux. It’s the first day of astronomical spring in North America, Europe and Asia, while in the Southern Hemisphere, summer is transitioning to autumn. Eastern time, signals the end of winter and first day of spring in the Northern Hemisphere.

At the site, the impressive pyramid known as El Castillo was aligned so that a shadow outlining the form of a snake of light (Kukulcán) descends the steps on the equinoxes. The day is a bit longer at higher latitudes than at the equator because it takes the sun longer to rise and set the closer you get to the poles. And the effect is more dramatic the farther you get from the equator. EarthSky says the equinox is "a good day for finding east and west from your yard or other favorite site for watching the sky. The effect is at its maximum in late June and late December. And now here we are at the spring equinox! That positions one hemisphere of the planet to get more sunlight than the other for half of the year's orbit around the sun. Here's how that breaks down at various points around the world (all times adjusted for Daylight Saving Time):

Happy first day of spring! The equinox is today at 4:24 p.m. CDT and will mark one of Austin's coldest spring equinoxes on record.

Austin hasn't seen spring equinox temperatures in the 40s since then. Everything's in order for spring to begin, but there's one more preparatory event to mark: the spring equinox. This causes 12 hours of sunlight almost everywhere on Earth.

Spring equinox 2023: Why day and night aren't actually equal in length (New Scientist)

The 2023 vernal equinox in the northern hemisphere occurs on 20 March, but it's not strictly true that this means day and night are the same length.

Likewise, day and night are of almost equal length on 14 April at 5 degrees south of the equator, while at 60 degrees south, it happens on 22 March. But there are a few minutes after the centre of the sun disappears in which the rest of the sun is visible. On the equinox, the centre of the sun is visible for exactly 12 hours in a day. The sun has technically risen even when only some of it is visible, and it hasn’t set until all of it has disappeared. First, the sun is a disc, not a point of light. You might have heard that day and night are of equal length around the world at the equinox (hence the name), but this isn’t strictly true.

Spring Has Sprung — Here Are 6 Rituals To Spring Clean Your Soul (mindbodygreen.com)

It's a time to celebrate rites of passage by doing special rituals to welcome in the spring equinox. Here are some of my favorite rituals for renewal.

As we welcome in the spring equinox, brushing off winter's chill, allow the feeling of this fresh start to Now, eat the seeds and know they are being assimilated into your energy field. Then go outside and let it go…freely releasing it to source. I love to do this and give the flowers to friends—and even strangers—I meet at this time of year. Symbolically place everything on this plane—you can write words, paste on stickers, or paint signs and symbols on the plane. Now think of what holds you back and keeps you stuck. Breathe in the aroma to strengthen the [Aries](https://www.mindbodygreen.com/articles/aries-sign-101) fire within you. Addictions to intensity including your cellphone, social media, and email? To complete this, purify your space by smudging with herbs of your choice, opening all the windows and letting the fresh air in. Think of essences associated with spring: enterprising, spontaneous, daring, active, courageous, and energetic. Symbolically wash your hands, feet, and body three times to represent clearing the mind, body, and soul. The Earth is shrugging off the last vestige of winter as we move into the spring equinox.
