As reflected in the current iteration of March Madness, the 2022-23 season has been a mixed bag for men's college basketball in Indiana.

It's fair to call this IU basketball season a success, and the future ... (The Daily Hoosier)

No, Indiana didn't win a national title in 2023. And if that's your only way to measure success for IU basketball, well then, you just experienced failure ...

A Big Ten Tournament double-bye and the Sweet 16? That’s just the reality of college basketball in 2023. And there were certainly some losses in that mix where you were left to wonder — what if a guy like Xavier Johnson was available? What were reasonable expectations coming into the season? They were a near consensus favorite to win the Big Ten, but instead finished third. That’s more than 40 points per game off the board. 1 Purdue, and snapped a long losing streak to Rutgers during that span. But the expectations were indeed high for this edition of the program. There was a road win at Xavier, a team now in the Sweet 16. There was a dominant win over a North Carolina team that certainly had talent if not cohesion. But still, don’t call this season a failure. And those high expectations were reasonable.

Indiana men's basketball: Well, that was fun, wasn't it? (The Crimson Quarry)

There’s more basketball to be played tonight from Teri Moren’s programs and plenty of updates to write in the coming weeks. Kaleb Banks logged a few key minutes in the latter half of the season while Malik Reneau grew into his own in a reserve role for Thompson and Jackson-Davis. Between his roof-raising dunks and his leadership, he was a centerpiece for both the fanbase and the team itself. That’s a lot of production to replace, so expect the transfer portal to come into play. He didn’t have to, could’ve rode off into the sunset and worked his way up in the NBA, but he did. Led by second year head coach Mike Woodson and star Trayce Jackson-Davis, the Hoosiers gave the team and fanbase plenty of memories.

IU women's basketball: Miami 70 Indiana 68 — Three keys (The Daily Hoosier)

But the Hurricanes answered by getting the ball to Harden in the paint, who faced up against Berger. But it turned into a metaphorical boxing match in the fourth quarter, in a tight game that saw both teams hitting clutch shot after clutch shot. Grace Berger came out and opened the quarter with a three-pointer, quickly followed by a defensive stop, and then another Berger layup. The Hurricanes were hitting their open shots, but also tough, contested looks, and they responded in big moments when the crowd came alive. Both teams traded big shots in the fourth quarter, but it was the Hoosiers who ultimately came up on the wrong end. The Hurricanes built a double-digit lead during the first quarter, and IU was unable to cut into it for very long.

Indiana women's historic season comes to shocking end as Miami ... (Evansville Courier & Press)

Indiana women's historic season comes to shocking end as Miami knocks out No. 1 Hoosiers · News Across the U.S..

"She's a freshman and she's making big plays in the NCAA Tournament. She's a really special player and I'm glad the world got to see her performance." "It's unfortunate on a night where we needed to be so good and flawless almost defensively, we had a lot of hiccups throughout the 40 minutes." "We'll take that shot from Grace Berger and I'll take the layup from Chloe that she missed, as well. Harden was only able to convert 1 of 2 FTs, which left the door open for IU to grab the lead. "We got the shots we wanted," Moren added. When Roberts stalled the early momentum with a bucket of her own, Parrish drew a charge and Holmes followed with three straight buckets to make it a three-point game. Holmes, who finished with 22 points (18 in the second half) and nine rebounds, tied the game twice with layups in the fourth quarter. The problem was, no one really picked up the slack with IU shooting 34% over the first two quarters, and the defense was uncharacteristically wobbly, allowing Miami to shoot 57% with nine 3-pointers on 15 tries. Coming out of a timeout, Miami threw the ball to Destiny Harden in the lane. Holmes made her presence known after the break, ripping off 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting with four rebounds and an assist in the third quarter. It was a very bad, no good, pretty horrible start for Indiana, which missed 15 of its first 21 shots from the field.

COLUMN: Indiana women's basketball fought, but sometimes that's ... (Indiana Daily Student)

Senior forward Mackenzie Holmes talks to a referee after a no foul call March 20, 2023, at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall in Bloomington. Miami defeated Indiana 70- ...

But as she gazed from one block of empty seats to the next, her appreciation for her short time in Bloomington was evident. For Moren, Holmes, Berger and everyone involved in the program, it will likely take some time to recover. She stepped to the free-throw line, took a few dribbles and sunk her first attempt. Whether we didn’t communicate the way we needed to on a switch, whether we went under a ball screen, that was not our gameplan.” React to the loss as you wish. The 8-point hole felt more akin to a giant well, but to the Hoosiers credit, they fought. But a questionable offensive possession in which Berger put up a contested floater bailed out the Hurricanes and yanked them right back into contention. Holmes was completely stifled in the first half, but her 18 second half points spearheaded a comeback that fell just short. Most importantly, each saw the farewell of Hoosier greats that ushered in a new era of Indiana basketball: senior forward Trayce Jackson-Davis for the No. But now, the pairing’s third March Madness run has come to a close. It’s hard to script a worse 24 hours for the Hoosier state. Each saw one team pouncing on loose balls and boxing out for rebounds with tenacity, and the other seemingly flustered by the physicality.

And after that heartbreaking 70-68 loss to Miami (Fla.) at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, IU's locker room displayed the ...

But the realization that this was her last time playing with Berger and Alyssa Geary was harder to cope with. Unlike Berger, this — in all likelihood — is the end of her competitive playing career. The manager caught it, and the two walked back into the tunnel they emerged from with arms around each other. Geary walked to the free-throw line, and the manager stood under the hoop. By that point, the only others remaining were media and employees cleaning up the seating bowl. Berger, like Moore-McNeil, had a chance to put her team in front in the closing stretch. After Berger’s miss, and Miami adding two points at the free-throw line, Yarden Garzon hit a cold-blooded stepback 3-pointer with seven seconds left to tie the game at 68-68. It’s a pain that doesn’t come with a playbook. Browne’s season ended the way it began, watching from the bench while recovering from an injury; Wisne saw the court for just the 11th game this season, for all of 30 seconds. The junior missed an open layup that would’ve given Indiana a one-point lead with less than 30 seconds to play. For Indiana women’s basketball, Monday night presented the instantaneous version, in its most painful form, with meanings that the players will need a long time to grasp. 1 seed for the first time in program history, saw a golden opportunity to reach its first Final Four slip away.

Grace Berger's career, Indiana women's basketball's season ended ... (Indiana Daily Student)

As she walked off Branch McCracken Court for the final time in her storied career, Grace Berger stopped in front of her bench where her teammates stood, ...

Everything goes through Grace, and she's going to be one of the best to ever come through Indiana women's basketball, and it's just not going to be the same without her. With the loss, Berger’s career and Indiana’s season come to a screeching halt before anyone outside of Miami-Dade County expected it to end. As junior guard Sydney Parrish answered questions at the next locker over, trying not to get choked up as she praised Berger’s leadership and status as a program legend, Berger herself stayed motionless in her chair. She moved through the midrange and continuously made just enough space to get off a clean shot while feeding her cutting teammates for open looks and making life miserable for whomever she was guarding on the other end. Out of the timeout, the Canes inbounded the ball to their own veteran wing, graduate forward Destiny Harden, who was marked by Berger. She also found Holmes time after time open inside on pick and rolls for easy buckets, and by the fourth quarter, had finally helped Indiana tie the game back up with just under four minutes remaining. 1 seed Indiana’s second round NCAA Tournament game — a sight which would have been nearly unimaginable when Berger joined the program in 2018 — showered her with cheers as her name was announced. She makes everyone around her better, and she's a big reason why a lot of girls want to come here and play basketball,” Parrish said. She joined them in shock, hanging her head low and putting her hands on her knees, just staring at the hardwood. She chose us.” As she walked off Branch McCracken Court for the final time in her storied career, Grace Berger stopped in front of her bench where her teammates stood, stunned. The 14,480 fans in attendance for No.
