Wisconsin men's basketball: Badgers host Liberty in second round ... (Bucky's 5th Quarter)

It might not be the Big Dance, but UW's postseason dreams continue in the second round of the NIT with a showdown against the Liberty Flames Sunday morning.

But it’s not time for next season to start yet for Wisconsin, who will hope to move on to the Quarterfinals of the NIT with a win over Liberty Sunday. The Wofford-transfer faced an adjustment to Big Ten play in the first half, but started to progress as a scoring threat in the final weeks. A lot of the discussion of Wisconsin’s NIT adventure is about what it will mean for next season. The Neenah-native had 16 points and two assists, continuing a string of solid scoring performances in the back half of the season. But with a small team, the Flames struggled against the Wildcats inside. Crowl had a lot more mojo in the game against Bradley.

A pair of offensive stats to keep an eye on: Liberty comes into the contest boasting the 28th highest field goal percentage in college basketball at 47.40%. Liberty is expected to lose this next one by 3.5. Crowl had some trouble finding his footing against the Ohio State Buckeyes two weeks ago, so this was a step in the right direction. They enjoyed a cozy 81-62 win over the Bradley Braves. Meanwhile, Wisconsin earned some postseason bragging rights after a successful outing last week.

The Badgers finished with 46 of their points in the paint. Liberty started to send double teams at Crowl in the second half, and he responded with crisp passes that led to a pair of layups for Wahl. The Badgers will face the winner of Sunday night’s game between Oregon and UCF in the NIT quarterfinals. Hepburn scored 27 points, a UW career-high, and did almost all of his damage in the paint.

- Crowl picked up a flagrant and a technical foul for his incident with Robinson in the first half. In a foul-heavy game that featured nine ties and 14 lead changes, UW went 20-of-24 from the free throw line. "He was getting to the line. When he got to the rim, he jump-walled him and made him have to come through a body. "I think it's just a confidence thing," Hepburn said. "It all starts on the defensive side," said Hepburn. "Talk about Tyler making plays down the stretch." "The one Max had was huge," Gard said. "In that situation, being down one, I thought that was a good one to go to," Gard explained. LU shot 47.3 percent as a team, but went 6:53 without a field goal at one point in the second half. The Wofford transfer made a left-handed layup high off the glass to put the Badgers in front. Hepburn, who feasted on a pair of 5-foot-9 guards, got to the free throw line 11 times, making nine of those attempts -- both personal bests.

Hepburn powers Badgers to NIT quarterfinals (Kenosha News)

The sophomore point guard scored more than 13 points for the first time in the month to advance the Badgers to the NIT quarterfinals.

He had done enough earlier, and now the Badgers are onto the NIT quarterfinals. Crowl had gotten into foul trouble in the middle of the game after having scored 10 of UW’s first 14 points. But the middle of the game when the Badgers needed some production belonged to Hepburn. From the early part of the game, Hepburn had no issue with the offensive matchup of either Porter or McGhee. UW (19-14) will play the winner of Sunday night's game between top-seeded Oregon and Central Florida. UW coach Greg Gard acknowledged that with center Steven Crowl’s career-high 36 points on Tuesday and now Hepburn’s performance Sunday, the value of playing in the NIT is well-defined: This is a chance at redemption for these Badgers.

Wisconsin Basketball: 3 things we learned in Badgers win (Badger of Honor)

Wisconsin basketball took on Liberty University in the second round of the NIT. Showing the grit and moxie that is a Wisconsin trademark, UW won 75-71.

Finally, they said that Wisconsin is finally able to play with the pressure of must-win games. My only regret was that Crowl lost his composure a bit when he said something inflammatory and picked up the technical with it. Klesmit had a height advantage and calmly launched his 3-point bomb and the Badgers took the lead 68-67. It looked as if everyone on Liberty’s roster was an acting major, with all of the flopping going on. I’ll be the first to admit that I underestimated Liberty too much. I believe, from watching the replay a few times on my DVR, that Robinson tried to pull Crowl down with him. The “Big Steve” that has been playing the last two games should be a monster next year in the NCAA paint. He was ice-cold from three-point land (0-6) but still amassed a career-high 27 points on 9-20 from the field and 9-11 from the charity stripe. It seemed that every time Liberty was poised to make a run and put some distance between themselves and Wisconsin, Chucky stopped it with a forceful drive. When I first started watching Steven Crowl this season, I thought he had a good bit of talent but maybe a little passive in his game. He would slash and drive, put English on the ball that seemed to defy physics. As the Flames went a collective 8-27 (29.6%) beyond the arc, I would say that the Badgers did just that.

Wisconsin men's basketball: Three quick takeaways vs Liberty (Bucky's 5th Quarter)

The Badgers advanced to the quarterfinals of the NIT with a huge win against Liberty.

This season, the Badgers shot 68% as a team from the line, good for 11th best in the Big Ten. But he made up for it with an incredible performance, leading the Badgers to another NIT win. Liberty’s Darius McGhee finished with 31 points on 10/25 shooting, and he was the most dominant player on the floor throughout the game. Wahl, typically a 62% free throw shooter was excellent. Hepburn went 9-11 from the line in a fantastic game from the sophomore guard. The Badgers again shot the ball extremely well at the free-throw line on Sunday.

Hepburn leads Wisconsin over Liberty in NIT second round (Daily Cardinal)

The Badgers earned their first back-to-back wins since early January behind a career game from Chucky Hepburn.

Behind a career high 27 points from Hepburn, as well as 16 from Wahl and 14 from Crowl, the Badgers earned themselves another game in the quarterfinals of the NIT. Klesmit finished a high-arcing layup to put Wisconsin back up by one point, before the Badgers got a defensive stop on the other end. Hepburn responded with a last-second layup to give Wisconsin a 37-34 lead at the break.
