El Clasico 2023: Barcelona vs. Real Madrid live stream, watch ... (CBSSports.com)

Real Madrid go to Camp Nou needing a win to keep their faint La Liga title hopes alive.

A return to hard fought, hard-edged battles at the top of La Liga would be a welcome development for all. While Barcelona denies any wrongdoing due to these payments, the belief is that the payments were for Barcelona to receive preferential treatment and referee assignments, something which Real Madrid has spoken up about. Barcelona still maintains their innocence but that alone won't be enough to smooth their relationship with Real Madrid. While it may not show on the pitch during this edition of El Clasico, it s something that could have further implications down the line. Xavi's men can still win the league with a loss in the match, but a victory at the Spotify Camp Nou can grow their advantage to 12 points, dealing a hammer blow to Real Madrid in the title race adding weight to an occasion that has lost some of its fire over the years. While El Clasico is a rivalry on the pitch that has produced every type of memorably moment a grudge match could want, Barcelona's recent refereeing scandal has started a new chapter between the clubs.

FC Barcelona hosted bitter rivals Real Madrid in a La Liga edition of El Clasico on Sunday. Here's the result, some player ratings, and what we learned from ...

Didn't have much of a footballing impact on the proceedings in the first half but as always had plenty of fight in him. The Dutchman's distribution was off kilter compared to usual lofty standards to start with, but his second half wasn't bad at all. The captain was the first to give the ball away cheaply, which paved the way for an early Benzema chance, but settled down after that. Could have headed home a Raphinha cross from the left wing as Barca looked to equalize with around 25 minutes down, and almost became a hero with a cheeky inside heel effort from a corner at the half hour mark. Like most Barca players, he was better in the second half but put Madrid on a dangerous move with awry passing. Didn't have much to do for most of the rest of the match.

El Clasico ensures Barcelona to win LaLiga over Real Madrid (ESPN)

Franck Kessie scored a stoppage-time winner as Barcelona beat Real Madrid 2-1 at Camp Nou on Sunday to edge closer to a first LaLiga title since 2019.

Alejandro Balde's five assists are tied for the most by a LaLiga defender this season. We'll have to come here and win in the Copa." Real Madrid have had a league-high 15 VAR decisions and eight goals overturned this season. [Real Madrid](/soccer/team?id=86) surprisingly took the lead inside of nine minutes with a strange deflection resulting in an own goal from [Barcelona](/soccer/team?id=83). We still have the goal difference but they'd have to lose four games and we'd have to win all of them. But we have only won the Super Cup so far. Madrid will be back at Camp Nou on April 5 for the second leg of the Copa del Rey semifinal (live on ESPN+). At the full-time whistle, the Barcelona players huddled in the middle of the pitch before celebrating with fans behind the goal. Carlo Ancelotti's Real Madrid side were caught out at the back, though, as they chased the goal. It took several minutes for VAR to decide that Asensio was offside when Rodrygo passed the ball. Barca will feel they had the better of the chances. Madrid had earlier taken the lead in the ninth minute through a Ronald Araujo own goal, with Sergi Roberto drawing Barca level just before the break.

Barcelona 2-1 Real Madrid: El Clásico summary, score, goals ... (AS English)

An injury time goal from Kessie secures maximum points for the Catalan side who were forced to come from behind after an og from Araujo put Madrid ahead.

Real Madrid have left the door open for their president to change his mind and travel to Barcelona on a private plane this afternoon, although that would appear to be unlikely. Unless they suffer a collapse, the probability of that happening is slim - Barça have lost just two games in 25, and dropped just 10 points... Including tonight’s Clásico, there are 13 games left to play - 39 points to play for. In the Copa they were defensive because they had the lead. "This Madrid team is the European champion and they won the last league comfortably. What a swivel and turn from the Barcelona man as the home side win a corner. What a ball from Vino Jr. Vini goes for goal when he had men over in the centre of the box. Ter Stegen is alert and dives well to save. 'We need to be honest, it's going to be really difficult now to retain our title, but whilst there is still hope we'll keep going. 'We took risks at the end as we had to. a constant thorn in the side for Ronald Araujo.

Real Madrid react to Barcelona defeat: Disappointment, with ... (The Athletic)

What will saying goodbye to the league title in mid-March mean for Real Madrid? For now, the mood is only of disappointment and frustration.

Because if this was a defeat that seemed to settle the destiny of the league title, it left plenty of other things up in the air. Why is there no alternative to the injury-hit Madrid last week announced their decision to participate in the legal action against Barca. One source said: “They criticise us for the changes, but it was precisely because of those changes that we came closer to victory, it was when we were at our best.” Above such voices, out in the Barcelona night, the home fans were still singing and one chant was directed at Madrid’s club president Florentino Perez. The coaching staff did not like Xavi’s statements after the game, in which he said Barcelona had been superior to Madrid. They pointed out that one thing is toughness on the pitch, another altogether a lack of sporting behaviour, accusing the Barca midfielder of the latter. Behind the scenes, there was anger and frustration, too. [Barcelona](https://theathletic.com/football/team/fc-barcelona/)’s home ground erupted, players and coaching staff running together, lost in harmony, as one would celebrate a golden goal in extra time. The gestures of those both on the pitch and off it spoke of a tortuous cycle for the away side. There was a similar scene down around the bench; suddenly everyone was in improvised Cibeles mode. The team improved and in the 82nd minute were rewarded with a goal that changed everything, or, again, so they thought at the time.
