But the new free-agent pickup does plenty of the little things that can help the Patriots march down the field and rack up points. The opportunity to go to New England? That helps, plus the opportunity to kind of remake himself and rework himself and essentially start a new legacy. If New England plans on orchestrating a resurgent season on offense, Smith-Schuster may not be a No. He ended up catching seven passes off of 15 “contested” targets with the Chiefs. During the Chiefs’ run to a title, Smith-Schuster hauled in 10 catches over three playoff games. “They’ve got a lot of other guys, too, but I mean, these two receivers are elite — elite, elite.“ Brown (+174), Ja’Marr Chase (+149), and Deebo Samuel (+145). Joining an offense conducted by Mahomes was the right move for Smith-Schuster. Jaylen Waddle (+212 yards), A.J. The Patriots made their first big pickup of free agency Wednesday, adding free agent wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster.

He went to Kansas City looking for a fresh start and finished with 78 receptions for 933 yards and three touchdowns last season. A Pro Bowler in 2018 with Pittsburgh, Smith-Schuster's injury limited him to just five games his final season there in 2021. Meyers, who received a three-year, $33 million deal from Las Vegas, was New England's leading receiver each of the past three seasons. A person with knowledge of the deal said it is for three years and could be worth as much as $33 million. "Thank you to Kansas City for the giving me the opportunity to come in and contribute to a Super Bowl, the most unforgettable experience of my life," he wrote. Smith-Schuster's addition to the Patriots roster comes a day after they lost Jakobi Meyers after he agreed to a deal with the Las Vegas Raiders.

6 free agent wide receivers Chiefs can target after JuJu Smith ... (Chiefs Wire)

We take a look at the free agent wide receiver market after JuJu Smith-Schuster's departure from the #Chiefs:

It might not be a great idea to get in a bidding war with the Giants and Falcons for Slayton’s services, especially if he’s looking for a long-term deal. [tied to the Atlanta Falcons in free agency](https://twitter.com/art_stapleton/status/1636345054527619072). For instance, some of those tough catches across the middle of the field on mesh that Smith-Schuster used to make for Kansas City. He can make tough catches at every level of the field and would be a versatile weapon for Kansas City that could take some heat off of Travis Kelce. The 6-foot-1 and 219-pound wideout caught 30 passes for 417 yards and two touchdowns on a team that featured both Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. He caught a career-high 63 catches for 623 yards and three touchdowns in 16 games started last year. This is a signing that doesn’t seem like it’d break the bank for Kansas City. He finished the season with a career-high 40 receptions for 533 yards and three touchdowns, but it feels like a better QB situation could have seen an even more productive year for the wideout. He’s four seasons removed from his last 1,000-yard receiving season, but Beckham caught 44 passes for 537 yards and five touchdowns between the Rams and Browns in 2021. I think the big thing here will be getting Chark in the door to check on his health before you sign him to a deal. Who are some of the players they could target to add to the receiver room during the remainder of free agency? Fresh off a one-year deal with the Detroit Lions, Chark will be looking for another short-term contract in free agency.

Why did Patriots replace Jakobi Meyers with JuJu Smith-Schuster? (FOXSports.com)

Why did the Patriots replace Jakobi Meyers, a perfectly good WR2, with another WR2? Maybe because Bill Belichick thinks JuJu Smith-Schuster can do more.

[DeAndre Hopkins](https://www.foxsports.com/nfl/deandre-hopkins-player) and [Jerry Jeudy](https://www.foxsports.com/nfl/jerry-jeudy-player), per The Athletic. [Patrick Mahomes](https://www.foxsports.com/nfl/patrick-mahomes-ii-player) and Andy Reid. New England is betting on O'Brien to bring Smith-Schuster up to speed on the offense. [Stephon Gilmore](https://www.foxsports.com/nfl/stephon-gilmore-player) to the kind of deal Malcolm Butler wanted in 2017 — while Butler eventually moved on to the [Tennessee Titans](https://www.foxsports.com/nfl/tennessee-titans-team). And, maybe, Jones can help the Patriots bring out the 2018 version of Smith-Schuster — or, at the very least, Jones can help JSS continue the steady output he managed in Kansas City last season. [Jakobi Meyers](https://www.foxsports.com/nfl/jakobi-meyers-player) is out in New England. He does not have the same history with receivers, a position at which New England has struggled enormously to maximize its acquisitions. And it's not even a surprise to see New England attack the free-agent market at the same position. It's a bold decision for New England and Belichick, given their history of struggling to bring in wideouts. They're similar players: big slot receivers who have the versatility to play outside and inside. Smith-Schuster, meanwhile, is looking at realistically making $18 million in his first two years. And that's because, from a production standpoint, Smith-Schuster has done more.
