Elliott had his least amount of carries and targets in 2022, with Tony Pollard – whom the Cowboys gave the franchise tag – taking more and more work away from him as the season went along. In every year since that season, his targets, catches, and yards per reception have all gone down, and he has not had a season over 4.5 yards per carry since then, either. Elliott averaged a career-low in yards per carry in 2022 (3.8 YPC), and his receiving production has gradually declined in every season since he signed a massive six-year, $90 million extension in 2019.

Who's joined, who's left, who remains, what are the cap implications plus how comp picks work and what's the current status for 2024.

$4.45 million of cap hit is added to 2023, 2024 and 2025 (void year). Players who are cut from other teams, players who were RFAs or ERFAs who weren’t tendered, players signed after “May 12th” (specific date will vary year-to-year). There are ways to sign players that won’t add to the “players signed” ledger. Playing time and postseason awards are factored in at a much lesser weight. If a team loses a player valued as a third-round pick, and a player valued as a fifth round pick, but sign a player who’s valued as a third… Picks are not evenly distributed throughout these rounds, but rather done by a sliding cutoff scale. Also, no team can receive more than four compensatory picks in any one draft. If the Cowboys win the Super Bowl with Smith playing 90% of the snaps he will make $17 million. CONTRACT Elliott signed a lengthy extension heading into the 2019 season after being the league’s top rusher each of his first three seasons in the league. The two sides have until July 17 to continue negotiating towards a long-term agreement. Defensive tackles have closed the gap on edge defenders in recent years, and there’s a handful of those who have been paid.
