Holcomb fills a major need for the Steelers, who are expected to lose both Robert Spillane and Devin Bush in free agency. The season prior, he set a career high with 142 total tackles, broke up seven passes and intercepted two more, including a pick-six against the Dallas Cowboys. The 6-foot-1, 240-pound linebacker started 48 of 50 games for Washington, though his 2022 season was cut short after seven contests due to a foot injury that required surgery.

He also has shown some coverage ability with seven pass breakups and two interceptions in 2021. He was on pace to again lead the Commanders in tackles last season. That would be the one knock on him or concern about his measurables. The Steelers have long prioritized speed at the off-ball linebacker position, looking for a sideline-to-sideline athlete who can play on all three downs and cover. Both of those stats would have ranked first among all linebackers that year. He also registered an 11-foot broad jump and a 6.77 three-cone drill. The physical might be more than just a formality, as Holcomb endured a season-ending foot injury in Week 7 that required surgery.
