The judge found that Bauer honored the woman’s boundaries when the woman set them, and could not have known about those he violated because she didn’t express them clearly. He won the NL Cy Young Award with Cincinnati during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. Bauer has maintained he did nothing wrong, saying that everything that happened between him and the woman was consensual. The players’ association filed a grievance on Bauer’s behalf, and a three-person panel headed by Martin Scheinman ruled Dec. Trevor Bauer signs 1-year deal to play in Japan (ESPN)

Trevor Bauer has signed a one-year contract with the Yokohama DeNA BayStars of Nippon Professional Baseball.

In his first and final season with the Dodgers, he posted a 2.59 ERA with 137 strikeouts and 37 walks in 107⅔ innings, and batters hit .182/.258/.374 against him. At least two other women accused Bauer of sexual abuse, and the three spoke with MLB for its investigation, which led to the record-long suspension. "Playing in the NPB has always been a dream of mine, and I can't think of a better organization to do it with." Bauer denied the allegations of sexual assault by the woman, who said he choked her and hit her during rough sex. Every team in MLB could have signed Bauer for the major league minimum but opted against it. He was placed on administrative leave for the remainder of the season and eventually suspended for 324 games by Major League Baseball.

The BayStars play in the Japanese Central League and have been in existence as a professional team since 1950. Despite his successful seasons in Cincinnati and Los Angeles, Bauer was not claimed by any of M.L.B.’s other 29 clubs when the Dodgers waived him. Bauer had joined the Dodgers as a free agent following his best professional season. That stretch of success, however, came in a tumultuous career in which Bauer had highly publicized issues with teammates in high school, college and at multiple major league stops. [allegations that Bauer had sexually assaulted a woman](https://www.nytimes.com/2022/02/08/sports/baseball/trevor-bauer-charges.html), punching her and choking her in what she said had initially been a consensual sexual encounter. Throughout the process, Bauer, who has not been charged with any crimes, has been vocal in his own defense and has maintained his innocence against all allegations. The move to Japan comes after the Dodgers released Bauer, the winner of the 2020 National League Cy Young Award, instead of adding him to the team’s 40-man roster following his reinstatement to M.L.B. The suspension came after a long investigation by M.L.B. The Dodgers outbid several other teams, giving him a three-year, $105 million contract. “I can’t tell you how excited I am to be playing for the BayStars this year,” Bauer said in a statement issued through the BayStars. The deal, which the team [officially announced](https://twitter.com/ydb_yokohama/status/1635431616469409792) Tuesday morning in Japan, is expected to pay Bauer $4 million. Bauer, 32, has frequently been a lightning rod for controversy.
