Source: Bears, Tremaine Edmunds agree to free agent deal (NBC Sports Chicago)

The Bears reportedly added another free agent linebacker to their defense on the first day of free agency negotiations.

Despite the low interception numbers, Edmunds led all linebackers in pass breakups and forced incompletions last season, per PFF. Edmunds was a first-round pick for the Bills in 2018, became an instant starter and was a consistent contributor in the middle of their defense for five years. Edmunds started 74 games for Bills since 2018, and racked up 565 tackles, 6.5 sacks, 35 passes defended over that time.

REPORT: Chicago Bears Strike Early On Free Agent Market (sportsmockery.com)

The Chicago Bears didn't waste any time. They've come to terms on a three-year deal with veteran linebacker T.J. Edwards.

Given his athletic profile, it’s a reasonable assumption that Edwards will man the weakside linebacker spot. Based on early rumors, it sounds like the Bears will be active next month, trying to upgrade their front four after a disastrous 2022. Either way, Edwards is the first step in overhauling a front seven that was among one of the NFL’s worst in 2022. He may not be Roquan Smith, but he is a solid player that greatly helps a weak linebacking corps. He can play both outside and in the middle, depending on where Matt Eberflus and the coaching staff see him. Getting him for less than $7 million per year is a big win for the Bears.

What the Bears are getting in new OG Nate Davis (Chicago Bears Wire)

We spoke to Mike Moraitis of Titans Wire to give us a rundown on what we can expect from new Bears OG Nate Davis.

In fact, I think he could be even better than he was with the Titans if he has a better right tackle next to him. MM: The Titans have had a revolving door of offensive linemen who have played very poorly in recent years. I really like this signing for the Bears and Davis will be worth every penny if he can stay healthy. Mike Moraitis: A really solid right guard who has improved each and every year he’s been in the league. MM: Davis shines as a run-blocker, something that made him a valuable asset in Tennessee’s run-first offense. Davis, 26, has started 54 games for the Tennessee Titans at right guard in his first four seasons.

Chicago Bears: Top Options At Pick 9 In The 2023 NFL Draft (NFL Mocks)

Which 2023 NFL Draft prospects could the Chicago Bears select at pick 9? There are no shortage of options depending on free agency moves.

Moore gives the Bears a guy who can win down the field and has the chops to win on his own as well. Robinson is a wizard who could thrive in the running game with Fields and be a very strong pass-catching threat. His athleticism gives him the ability to recover with his footwork, and his big build gives him the ability to win with size and strength. This isn’t to say the Chicago Bears should do this, but there’s a strong chance that Bijan Robinson is easily the best player available when they’re on the clock. His technique in the back pedal is excellent, he transitions effortless, and can close space in an instant. His tackling skills are great and he brings the enforcer mentality of a safety. However, technically, his hands are very wide to catch edge rushers, and giving up the chest won’t fly in the league. There isn’t anyone better than him in space and on the move, where he has the identity of a bulldozer and a wrecking ball. The Chicago Bears made a big move in the 2023 NFL Draft, trading down from the top pick to the ninth overall selection in a mega deal with the Carolina Panthers. That deal landed them picks 9 and 61 in the 2023 NFL Draft, plus a first-rounder in 2024 and a second-rounder in 2025. He won on the interior with length, power, and quicks, but his plan on the edge was generating enough momentum to hopefully knock you backwards and on the ground. His footwork to recover is great, and his hand placement consistently got better over the course of the season.

The key is not to get too caught up in the drama. Walker is merely the first piece of the puzzle. The Chicago Bears have three picks in the first two rounds. He can move inside and outside, using his power and length to create penetration at the line of scrimmage. Most of his sacks and pressures came over the final ten games of last season. The Chicago Bears couldn’t afford to leave the first day of free agency without getting some help for their defensive line.

Bears' unexpected free-agency start leads to tough questions, few ... (NBC Sports Chicago)

After months of talk, the Bears' big spending day arrived. Ryan Poles added talent, but the underwhelming nature of Day 1 shows how much work is left to do.

It's a good reminder of the minuscule amount of talent the Bears were working with in 2022. He had a chance to follow that up with a flurry Monday and supercharge the Bears' momentum heading toward the draft. But at a certain point, a 3-14 team with holes across the board and $75 million in cap space has to make a splash in the critical areas. The trenches are still a massive issue for the Bears. [hit a home run on Friday](https://www.nbcsports.com/chicago/bears/dj-moore-vital-bears-fleecing-panthers-several-reasons) when he fleeced the Carolina Panthers in a trade that saw the Bears add three draft picks and wide receiver D.J. The former Broncos had interest from the Bears and Browns but ultimately agreed to a three-year $51 million deal with the Seattle Seahawks. With Edwards and Edmunds in the second level, that shouldn't be the case in 2023. Poles then added right guard Nate Davis, agreeing to a three-year, $30 million deal with the 26-year-old. But the Bears watched McGlinchey, who they were heavily involved in discussions with, agree to a massive five-year deal with the Denver Broncos. In Edmunds, the Bears get a 24-year-old rangy, athletic linebacker who attacks downhill and can cover in space. Edwards wore the green dot as the MIKE linebacker for the Philadelphia Eagles and will come home to do the same for the Bears. Poles dove back into the pool, this time forking over a four-year, $72 million deal to linebacker Tremaine Edmunds.

He returned in 2021 to start 14 games at right guard as the Titans finished with a 12-5 record and the top seed in the AFC. Davis, 26, started 54 games at right guard for the Titans over the last four seasons, including 12 starts in 2022 before an ankle injury landed him on injured reserve in December. He is big and powerful, using a good anchor and long arms to clog running lanes. Expect the coaching staff to utilize him there a lot. However, he is a workhorse. The last signing of the day and arguably the most important. The Chicago Bears need a lot of help. The problem most of his career was pass protection. Davis really struggled through the first three seasons of his career. The Bears were widely expected to secure one of the top right tackles on the market. The 26-year-old has been a primary starter for the Philadelphia Eagles over the past two seasons. They demand a lot from their linebackers in coverage. Eberflus is a maestro with linebackers. There were plenty of unexpected twists along the way.

Bears sign Tremaine Edmunds: Experts hand out grades for Chicago (Chicago Bears Wire)

The Chicago Bears made a splash in free agency with the addition of former Buffalo Bills linebacker Tremaine Edmunds to a four-year, $72 million deal with ...

The only knock that’s keeping this signing below an A is that the Bears doubled down at the linebacker position after just agreeing to a modest deal with Edwards. The Bears had one of the worst linebacking corps in the NFL entering today. And in addition to the newly acquired Edwards, the Bears already had youngster Jack Sanborn, who flashed at times as a rookie in 2022. This signing certainly comes with a high level of risk, which is why I’ve given the move a B-, but it could certainly pay off if Edmunds continues to develop. The only real issue with this deal is a big one — Edmunds has had one great season after four that were average to below-average. The Bears have a litany of needs, and have invested $93 million total into a pair of off-ball linebackers. The Bears have rebuilt the middle of their defense in a couple moves with more active playmaking overall. It all kicked in last season, as Edmunds became the complete linebacker the Bills hoped he would be. He really seemed to put it together in 2022, though, and if he can maintain that level of play the Bears will be in good shape with him and T.J. Edmunds had a rough first four years in the league — he made splash plays here and there but a lack of consistency held him back. First, off-ball linebacker is a non-premium position in the NFL. It’s the largest deal for an inside linebacker in the NFL.

Walker logged career bests in tackles (32) and sacks (seven) in 2022, and he profiles as a strong-side end who can play some tackle on passing downs. Walker racked up 30-plus quarterback pressures in each stop, with a pressure percentage above 10% in each and a career-high seven sacks in 2022 that may have boosted the value here a bit.
