The Last of Us Season 2: More Infected, Action and Clickers (Variety)

For a show about a post-apocalyptic world torn apart by a deadly fungus that creates zombie-like creatures, there weren't a whole lot of zombies in the final ...

Sometimes it will be different radically, and sometimes it will be barely different at all, but it’s going to be different. “The Last of Us: Part II” debuts the shamblers, another large subset of monster covered in pus-filled spores that can spew acid. “Part of the adaptation process is trying to figure out how to take source material that was built around gameplay, and port it over to a medium that is passive,” Mazin said. Well, as Mazin pointed out, Ramsey was 17 when she filmed Season 1, and she’s currently 19, which is Ellie’s age in “Part II.” “There is more ‘The Last of Us’ to come,” Mazin teased. “Ultimately, we generally stressed the power of relationships and trying to find significance within moments of action,” Mazin told reporters during a virtual press conference for “The Last of Us” last week. “The Last of Us” game and Season 1 both reveal several progressively deadly stages of cordyceps infection, and “The Last of Us: Part II” notably introduced new types of monsters. “It’s quite possible that there will be a lot more infected later. “The Last of Us” video game’s story has translated well to the HBO series, but some viewers had been hoping for more than just short bursts of action scenes spread across several episodes. “It’s much higher than we would want for the show,” Druckmann added. And although a lot of people do like to watch gameplay, it needs to be a little more focused and purposeful when we’re putting it on TV.” He drives Ellie back to the Jackson settlement and lies to her about what happened.

She’s one of the most important figures in the video game, and a sure bet for a second season of the show. Seven years later, The Last of Us Part II hit PlayStation 4 in the early days of COVID. The Last of Us Part II is a vast game, about 10 hours longer than its predecessor. The first Last of Us video game arrived in 2013. If The Last of Us season two started filming today with a similar timeline as season one, then we’re looking at a late 2024 debut at the soonest, and likely a little bit later than that. HBO first revealed its plans to adapt The Last of Us in March 2020, announcing their fictional pandemic apocalypse in the midst of an actual pandemic.

Will HBO allow the face of this show to be killed off in episode one or two of the second season? Naturally, Dina and Abby will be highly coveted roles when HBO’s The Last of Us gets to them, whether that’s in season two or later. Or could there be a new quest for Joel and Ellie to complete that gets them out of the settlement and on the road again? The story of Part 2 not only eliminates Joel, it shifts focus to his murderer, balancing the story between Ellie’s search for vengeance and Abby’s battles with a religious cult called the Seraphites. [revealed](https://twitter.com/IGN/status/1619103337877737472?s=20) that it will likely take more than one season to adapt The Last of Us, Part 2. So much of the finale is about Joel and Ellie revealing truths about their background, with Joel telling the story of his failed suicide attempt and Ellie revealing what happened with Riley. In the game, the daughter of that doctor, a woman named Abby (voiced by Laura Bailey), hunts down Joel and tortures and kills him in front of Ellie. (The nurses in that OR could have a story to tell.) What happens when news of Marlene’s murder and Ellie’s kidnapping gets back to the rest of the organization? Remember that lingering shot in the finale of the doctor deceased on the OR floor? But maybe not that much of an advantage; the show became a hit by appealing to non-gamers as well, and a second season will need to balance the expectations of both sets of viewers. In “Look for the Light,” Joel discovers that the plan to save humanity includes the death of Ellie. After revealing so much about their pasts over the course of the first season, their relationship going into the second will be built on a lie.

The Last of Us season 2 release, cast plans, and what we know so far (Polygon)

Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey are likely to be back for The Last of Us season 2, which is on its way to HBO, even if we don't know when the release date ...

As for how many that might be, the two have already said that they don’t feel the story of The Last of Us Part 2 can be adapted into just one season of television, so it’s likely they’d go for at least a third season, if not even more. Aside from that, here’s everything you should know about The Last of Us season 2 after watching the first season’s finale. There’s no word yet on when exactly The Last of Us might get its second season, but we do know it’s on the way. We don’t even know when season 2 might arrive, but given HBO’s habit of waiting two years between the first two seasons of its biggest shows (like [Westworld](https://www.polygon.com/23283744/westworld-season-4-mid-season-review-explainer) or likely [House of the Dragon](https://www.polygon.com/23419614/house-of-the-dragon-season-2-release-date-cast-news)) it seems like we could be waiting awhile to return to The Last of Us’ [Cordyceps apocalypse](https://www.polygon.com/23570026/the-last-of-us-infected-zombies-all-types). And while some fans online have expressed a bit of concern about Bella being too young for Ellie’s storyline in The Last of Us Part 2, she’s actually exactly the same age as the character in the game already. [The Last of Us](https://www.polygon.com/reviews/23547254/last-us-review-hbo-tv)’ first season has come to an end, but there’s more to [Joel and Ellie’s story](https://www.polygon.com/gaming/23552202/last-of-us-greatest-video-game-status) than one season of TV could tell.

'The Last of Us' Set Up Season 2 Perfectly By Going to Jackson Early (Collider.com)

Introducing Jackson early relieves the show of some of the heavy lifting. The last of Us Rutina Wesley Maria Episode 6 Image via HBO.

Jackson is a place of respite, a glimpse of what’s to come, and a representation of everything Joel and Ellie stand to gain or lose. [Tommy’s wife Maria is a leader in the commune](https://collider.com/last-of-us-episode-6-jackson-communism/) helping them grow and develop, we start to see how this settlement will grow into a thriving town in the years to come. It’s a place where she can be a kid around other kids, where she doesn’t have to worry about [the threat of FEDRA](https://collider.com/last-of-us-hbo-fedra-necessary-evil/) or infected, and a place where she can have a home, something she’s never really had before. [It’s a community, one that’s maintained its safety](https://collider.com/last-of-us-series-jasmila-zbanic-jackson-comments/) through isolation and has been able to thrive because of it. No one knows her here and everyone has a role contributing to the commune. Seeing Jackson isn’t just about setting up fun tidbits and laying down some character work, it also kick-starts the conflict that will become the crux of Joel and Ellie’s relationship going forward. And at the end of the game we get to see Jackson from a hillside as Joel and Ellie approach, showing a large and peaceful-looking town with electricity. Joel still asks Tommy to take Ellie off his hands, only reconsidering after she’s attacked by raiders and Joel and Ellie have a blowout similar to what happens in the show. While Joel, Ellie, Maria, and Tommy are in the meeting hall having lunch there’s a brief interaction between Ellie and another young girl peeking at them from a distance away. Since this location is so important and holds so many characters who will be part of the story going forward, it makes sense to let us see how the place was shaping up. Jackson is only a minor part of the original game’s story and later becomes a central location in The Last of Us Part II when Joel and Ellie make it their permanent home after the events of the first game. Tommy and Maria are in the process of trying to get the hydroelectric dam back in working order, so they can get power to Jackson.

So, the events of The Last of Us Season 2 will mirror those of the first season, but the other way around. Considering the [skyrocketing fame and internet belovedness of Pedro Pascal](https://mashable.com/article/pedro-pascal-audiobook) following Season 1, this devastating moment in the narrative will be all over your feed. Abby's character also plays a major role in the game beyond Joel's murder, expanding the world of The Last of Us beyond Ellie's experience. Pascal and Ramsey have built the same level of chemistry and bond Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson's Joel and Ellie did, and it's going to break our hearts to see Fans of the game have surmised that this is possibly Dina, Ellie's future love interest and one of the key characters we'll see in Season 2. For fans of the game, we know what's coming in Season 2. In The Last of Us Part II, the story basically begins with one of the franchise's best ever scenes: As sparks fly between Dina and Ellie at a Jackson barn dance, they share their first kiss together. [The Last of Us Part II,](https://mashable.com/article/last-of-us-part-2-review) the future is uncertain for Ellie (Bella Ramsey) and Joel (Pedro Pascal). We'll likely get a little scene immediately after the events of Season 1 before skipping ahead four years in the future, with the pair still living in Jackson, with new friends and a yet-to-be-explained strain on their relationship. The series, like the game, ended with [Joel's polarising decision](https://mashable.com/article/the-last-of-us-ending-explained) to save Ellie, sacrificing a potential cure for the [Cordyceps](https://mashable.com/article/the-last-of-us-jakarta-indonesia-cordyceps-outbreak-origin) infection and executing the entire Fireflies' medical team, including their leader, Marlene (Merle Dandridge). [The Last of Us](https://mashable.com/category/the-last-of-us) has ended its first season, leaving us nothing less than [emotional husks](https://mashable.com/article/the-last-of-us-most-heartbreaking-episodes-ranked), nothing more than hungry for more deep character-based trauma in Season 2. We don't actually visit the Jackson settlement in the first game at all; we just see it way off in the distance, when Joel and Ellie find Tommy and Maria at the hydroelectric plant that's powering it nearby.

The Last of Us Ending Explained and What to Expect in Season 2 (Den of Geek US)

The Last of Us season 1 has come to an emotional and divisive end. Here's everything that happens and how it could affect Joel and Ellie in season 2.

Ellie and Abby become entangled in a cycle of violence and vengeance that takes them both to Jackson and the surrounding wilderness, Seattle, and Santa Barbara over the course of the game. The main story in Part II takes place about five years after the events of The Last of Us Part I, though there are some flashback scenes that show some of what Joel and Ellie have done in the years between the games. However the series decides to break up The Last of Us Part II, there are a few things that should be safe to assume we’ll see in the show. He tells her that raiders attacked the hospital and that he barely got her out alive. Joel wakes up in the Fireflies’ hospital base, where Marlene apologizes for her patrol men and lets him know that Ellie wasn’t hurt by the smoke bomb. Anna leaves the baby, who she has named Ellie, and her knife with Marlene, asking her to protect the baby with her life and to kill her before the infection makes her lose control. The Cordyceps within Ellie gives off chemical markers that makes “normal” cordyceps think that she is the fungus. Ellie thinks that he’s telling her this simply because enough time has passed to finally heal the wound that losing Sarah left within Joel, but he lets her know that it wasn’t time that healed him, it was spending this time with her. While this ending will likely be divisive, as it was when gamers first experienced it in The Last of Us Part I, there’s no denying that it’s satisfying to see Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) finally reach the end of their journey. She manages to kill the infected, but not before it bites her in the leg. The Last of Us season 1 has come to an emotional and divisive end. Here’s everything that went down in the season 1 finale and where season 2 could go from here…

After "failing" to protect Sarah and Tess throughout The Last of Us, Joel was adamant about not letting Ellie die in The Last of Us episode 9. Despite moving on from the trauma of Salt Lake City, Abby never forgets her father's death or the man who killed him. Her journey begins just hours after Joel's rampage, in which she re-enters the hospital in Salt Lake City to find countless Fireflies — most importantly her father — dead. After Joel was told that the Fireflies' method of creating a cure would kill Ellie, Joel overcame the fear that plagued him in The Last of Us episode 6 and fought to protect her. From killing the two soldiers tasked with escorting him out to the men defending the hospital and even Marlene, Joel left next to no one alive in his quest to save Ellie's life.

What to Expect from <i>The Last of Us</i> Season 2 (TIME)

The moral conundrum that is posed to Ellie and Joel at the end of the first game laid the foundation for the main protagonists’ splintered relationship, which gets explored throughout the second part of the game. Druckmann told IGN that the only way they would do a Part 3 is if he and Mazin had “a really good, compelling story,” but answered “no comment” about the existence of a third installment. The second game is a tale of vengeance and explores that theme in multiple ways, which should once again make for exciting television. There have not been any announcements as to when the show will begin filming, but when Pascal was [asked during an interview](https://collider.com/last-of-us-season-2-pedro-pascal-comments/) if there’s a chance that filming will begin later this year, he said that there is. It starts five years after the end of the first game, and we see Joel and Ellie settled down in Jackson, Wyoming with Joel’s brother, Tommy, and the rest of its inhabitants. They encounter an infected and both got bitten, but Ellie found out she was immune and had to kill Riley when she turned. The second game makes a significant leap forward in time. But there are many crucial characters in Part II who will most likely be featured in Season 2. Speaking of the video game, many are wondering what Season 2 of the TV series will look like. He reassures her that it’s true, and they make their way to Jackson, Wyoming, to settle down with Joel’s brother Tommy. The TV adaptation ends in the same way as the game, with Ellie (Bella Ramsey) asking Joel (Pedro Pascal) to promise that he didn’t lie to her about there being others who are also immune to Cordyceps and that the doctors didn’t need her after all. Tonight, as the Oscars aired on ABC, millions of viewers turned their attention elsewhere, to the season finale of HBO’s The Last of Us.

'The Last Of Us' Showrunners Talk About Infected Bodies, Ellie's Backstory And Whether Bella Ramsey Will Return.

That to me was one of the most fulfilling moments of the production and the show because I’m a fan of the game and I’m a fan of Ashley’s. Sometimes it will be different radically, and sometimes it will be fairly different. I think it gives it more weight and maybe shows more of the tragedy behind Marlene’s sacrifice, that she was trying to make for the betterment of mankind.” And to see her giving birth to herself in a sense, and to create that genetic connection between her performance as Ellie and the origin story of Bella as Ellie was just profound.” But within the episodes that we were concentrating on, I think ultimately we generally stressed the power of relationships and trying to find significance within moments of action. [ [Ellie’s mom] Anna](http://deadline%20The%20Last%20of%20Us), so that when you get to the ending and we pit Marlene against Joel, they have their own opposite philosophical terms over how to approach of the end justify the means. I will say that even though we were green lit for a season of television, Neil and I felt like we couldn’t just make a season of television without considering what would come after. Fortunately, series showrunner [Craig Mazin](https://deadline.com/tag/craig-mazin/) and creator [Neil Druckmann](https://deadline.com/tag/neil-druckmann/) (who wrote the Sony Playstation Game on which the series is based) answered a few burning ones about the first nine episodes without giving anything away about [season 2](https://deadline.com/2023/01/the-last-of-us-renewed-season-2-hbo-1235242464/) (boo!).

However, the catch is that by the time season 4 of The Last of Us would be ready to air, it is in theoretically possible a third Last of Us game could be released. Craig Mazin has previously said that the second game is so big, it will likely take two seasons to adapt this time, as opposed to one season, one game for season 1. Pedro Pascal has said the second season might start to film this year, so the best guess is that we could maybe see The Last of Us season 2 in late 2024, or early 2025 at the latest. – It’s been confirmed that there will not be any sort of lengthy “break” season that will do non-game content in between the Part 1 and Part 2 of the games.

While Ellie starts out as a 15-year-old in the show’s first season, her character is supposed to be 19 years old in the second game. For the rest of new cast, it’s anyone’s guess who HBO will have joining the series in season 2. There’s still the matter of casting the newcomers. Armed with his trusty bow and arrow, Lev fights alongside Abby as a member of the Washington Liberation Front. They help Abby murder Joel, but these two lovers are among the more compassionate and merciful characters in the story, with both preferring not to engage in violence. Abby is a young woman who seeks revenge against Joel for murdering her father, one of the Firefly doctors who tried to operate on Ellie to create a Cordyceps cure. The two of them meet in the second game while living in Jackson, Wyoming. Though she starts off jaded and ruthless, she regains her sense of compassion and morality as she faces Ellie and the Seraphites, making her one of the most compelling characters in the franchise. The Last of Us Part II introduced many new characters who play important roles in Joel and Ellie’s story. Given Pedro Pascal’s massive popularity as Joel, staying true to the source material and killing his character off will surely ruffle a lot of fans’ feathers. Here’s everything that audiences could see in terms of the story. “Probably the amount of remaining story would take us more than a season to tell,” said Mazin.
