Iowa men's basketball falls in Big Ten Tournament opener, now ... (Hawk Central)

Iowa men's basketball exited the Big Ten tournament early with a Thursday loss to Ohio State. Up next: NCAA seeding on Selection Sunday.

I did say I thought we should have jumped on the (loose) ball at the end and call timeout...they fought and I thought was really positive. The Buckeyes responded with a 3-pointer to extend their lead to 67-63 with 1:54 on the clock. A bitter end to the regular season is followed by a sour loss in the first conference tournament game. "I'm not going to go in (the locker room) and go around the room and talk about what you didn't do, what you didn't do. Two clutch plays by Rebraca (two made free throws) and Murray (a driving layup) brought Iowa to within a 69-67 deficit with less than a minute to play. That was the final swing play that gave the Buckeyes the momentum. A driving layup cut the deficit to 64-63 with three minutes to play. Perkins led a strong defensive effort, including two blocks and two steals, that kept Iowa close during a three-minute streak from 8:21 to 4:43 when the Hawkeyes didn't record a basket. Iowa's 29 points in the first half was one of the lowest marks of the season. And the spark plug was Perkins, who led the team with 11 second half points. With the loss, Iowa falls to 19-13 and will wait for its NCAA Tournament seeding on Sunday. "I felt like we did well preparing and doing in practice what the coaches wanted," Rebraca said.

Iowa Basketball: Everything Iowa players, Fran McCaffery said ... (247Sports)

CHICAGO-- The Hawkeyes are making a quick exit from the Big Ten Tournament after falling 73-69 to No. 13 seed Ohio State on Thursday afternoon.

FRAN McCAFFERY: We're just going to move on to the next game. We had pretty decent defensive effort going on, and we kind of had our defensive guys out there a little bit more, and I wanted to be able to play loose and try to get going in the second half. I think we thought we had it, and we fumbled it again. Fran, the pace of the game, especially in the first half, was that a big factor? Did you feel like you guys had a good mojo coming in here like you did last year? When I felt that we made a run, they were able to make runs of their own and get stops. Describe that on the floor when you just can't stretch it out and the other team just keeps coming and coming. They got a lot of talent, a lot of scoring. TONY PERKINS: We just tried to deny the ball, get steals, get a quick basket and tie the game. I mean, I'm not sure about the call at the end, but it just didn't go our way, I guess, and they got the ball back. But both sides of the ball, I feel like we did pretty well. KRIS MURRAY: I feel like we got open looks we wanted to get.

7 seed before Thursday’s loss, but the defeat to the sub-500 Buckeyes will likely drop Iowa to a No. “Make sure we win, make up for today.” I think you have to give them credit. “We shot 50 percent from two [point range], didn’t make many threes in the game,” McCaffery said postgame. Iowa was projected as a No. “They just weren’t falling.”

Early exit: Takeaways as Iowa exits Big Ten Tournament early with ... (Hawkeyes Wire)

The Hawkeyes are headed home early from the Big Ten Tournament after an underwhelming showing against Ohio State. The takeaways for Iowa.

This was true until a shift happened in the second half. Until then though, this was not the prettiest. It should be because of the Hawkeyes’ performance. The action just felt like it was going at a snail’s pace. The jumpers just weren’t falling. That is the nature of the conference tournaments. There was a general chaos around the team and especially so down the stretch. They let Ohio State hang around this entire game, and in the end, it bit them on the backside. Iowa quite simply messed around and found out in this one. They shot poorly from all areas away from the rim and were unable to reliably sink a jump shot. Don’t even both reading the rest of this story (please do still) because that’s the ultimate feeling that we’re all going to take away from this game. [things that we’ve seen from Iowa](https://hawkeyeswire.usatoday.com/lists/iowa-basketball-hawkeyes-ohio-state-buckeyes-big-ten-tournament/) were on display in this one.
