Giants' next order of business: Build the offense around Daniel ... (nj.com)

It should also be remembered that the Giants were off in their evaluation of Darius Slayton, who ended up leading the team with 724 receiving yards after taking a pay cut before the start of the season and mostly sitting out the first three games. As unsexy as this sounds, the team’s best bet might be bringing back Slayton on a one or two-year deal and waiting for a much a better free-agent class at wide receiver next year. 1 receiver they need, there are other ways to upgrade the offense. Injuries, including a season-ending torn ACL in Week 11 against Detroit, limited Robinson to six games, but the 5-foot-8 rookie showed flashes of brilliance during his limited time on the field. I get that, but the value still has to match up and we still have several holes we need to fill.” Schoen’s first season in dealing with the receiver position was a fascinating and frustrating one. The scars of Toney’s massive contributions during the Chiefs’ Super Bowl victory are fresh and could become deeper depending on how he plays in future seasons. Sanders, in fact, would be the only free agent that would come close to giving the Giants a comparable replacement for Barkley, but it would still be a drop off. No other running back is likely to be selected in the first round. The Giants weren’t likely to sign either one, but Barkley is now clearly at the top of the free-agent running backs class with his former Penn State teammate Miles Sanders of the Philadelphia Eagles No. 1 back in the draft. If they do not bring back Barkley, the Giants will have to either sign a free-agent running back or add a No.

Giants news: 'Tension boiled over' between Joe Schoen and Daniel ... (G-Men H.Q.)

The clock is ticking for the NY Giants to sign Daniel Jones to a new deal and things reportedly got heated during talks on Monday.

The $32.4 million cap hit would be back-breaking for Schoen and the Giants if that’s the route they end up going with Jones. As we’re sure you already know, if the Giants place the tag on Danny Dimes, then this will open the door for Saquon Barkley to leave in free agency – Schoen and Barkley’s reps still have a bit of a gap there too and it doesn’t look like something will get done for No. According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the conversations got a bit heated at times.

The Giants and Daniel Jones are working up against the franchise tag deadline on Tuesday. Here's what an insider thinks a deal may look like.

That would give the Giants the necessary flexibility to build their roster. [New York Post](https://nypost.com/2023/03/06/giants-daniel-jones-contract-talks-have-promising-signs/) reported that using the tag on Jones isn’t a preferred outcome for the Giants or Jones. He also mentioned a way for New York to fudge the numbers a bit. The Giants and Jones could agree to structure his next contract in a way that backloads his payday. If that doesn’t happen, the Giants will use the franchise tag on Jones, which is worth $32.4 million for next year. At this time last year, who thought the Giants would be working against the clock to hammer out a lucrative multi-year deal to retain quarterback Daniel Jones?

The New York Giants' offseason saga is over. Daniel Jones has signed on the dotted line, committing to the Giants for four years and $160 million.

Since they didn’t have to use the franchise tag on Daniel Jones, With Schoen openly discussing applying the franchise tag, the team had leverage with Jones likely not wanting to play out a year without any long-term security. I have great respect for this organization, the Maras, the Tisches, my coaches and teammates. The former Duke Blue Devil took a major step forward this season, his first under head coach Brian Daboll, passing for a career-high 3,205 yards on a 67.2% completion rate with 15 touchdowns and just five interceptions. It’s a move that his former boss Brandon Beane used to use regularly with the Buffalo Bills. By structuring the deal that way, general manager Joe Schoen likely gives the Giants the ability to opt out of the contract after those two years should they choose to, preventing them from being locked into an expensive long-term contract if Jones doesn’t develop as they would like.

Jones, 25, had sought a major raise after leading the Giants to the playoffs in the last year of his rookie deal.

“We’ve got to draw a line in the sand like, ‘We’re not going any further,’” Schoen said. Schoen and Barkley’s agent, Kim Miale of Roc Nation Sports, had started early discussions on a long-term contract during the team’s bye week in November and have continued talks since the start of the off-season. Jones switched his representation to Athletes First shortly after the Super Bowl, making the change from Creative Arts Agency in search of a more lucrative contract, according to a person with knowledge of the move. The team’s season ended with a loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in the divisional round of the N.F.C. Jones’s deal comes as teams continue to set the quarterback market. Barkley will earn $10.09 million if he plays under the tag, but the Giants and Barkley can continue negotiations on an extension until July 17. In Daboll’s scheme, Jones made the most of short throws and designed runs to gain yardage and cut down on his turnovers. Jones posted career bests in passing yards (3,205) and completion percentage (67.2) and threw just five interceptions in the regular season. “If you have to franchise Daniel, I don’t think that’s best for the organization.

Giants extend QB Daniel Jones: Why the new deal raises the stakes ... (The Athletic)

Jones and the Giants barely beat Tuesday's franchise tag deadline by signing a long-term extension. Now, the real work begins.

Or his play leads Schoen and Daboll to regret changing course from the plan they had when they arrived in New York. The tag amount for a running back is a far more palatable $10.1 million, and the sides still could reach a long-term agreement. Schoen needs to overhaul the wide receiver corps, continue investing in the offensive line and fill numerous holes on defense. Jones had the lowest interception rate in the league, didn’t miss a game due to injury and led the Giants to their first playoff victory in 11 years. He came a long way, he’s still 25 and I still think there is room for improvement as he continues to mature and be around the staff.” Though the complete details of Jones’ contract aren’t yet known — and the deal can’t be fully evaluated until they are — it’s a safe bet that his cap hit in 2023 will be significantly lower than $32.4 million. Jones is the first quarterback to sign an extension with the team that declined his fifth-year option. deadline to apply the franchise tag added urgency to reach an agreement. What Daniel Jones' new deal means for the New York Giants (ESPN)

Jones signed a four-year deal minutes before Tuesday's franchise tag deadline. Breaking down what it means for the Giants.

Now, the Giants can add a higher-end receiver in free agency and/or a trade. The deal that was sitting on the table before this was somewhere in the $13 million range, The Giants love his work ethic, his skill set and how he handles the demands of being a franchise quarterback in New York. The price point of this deal makes it clear Schoen and Daboll are of the belief that Jones can take his game to the next level with better weapons and more time in the same system. As for the Giants, look, we know Jones isn’t earning a true $160 million. He has the talent, and if the Commanders can add around him, well, it’s a strategy they haven’t tried. That would give the Commanders plenty of room to continue to build a good team around Howell. Based on last season, Hurts will receive a much bigger deal than Jones and Dak Prescott of the Cowboys. 2 overall pick in the NFL draft will earn just over $10 million on the franchise tag in 2023. Giants sign QB Daniel Jones to long-term contract (Giants Wire)

After weeks of intense negotiations, the New York Giants have signed QB Daniel Jones to a long-term contract worth $160 million.

I have great respect for this organization, the Maras, the Tisches, my coaches and teammates. I am happy we were able to come to an agreement.” “We had productive conversations with Daniel and his representatives over the course of the past week or so,” general manager Joe Schoen said.

The Giants sign Daniel Jones in hopes that he's the next Eli Manning (Deadspin)

Danny Dimes has actually had a better first four years than Eli statistically, he's just missing that transcendent Super Bowl win.

And while no one knows his signal caller like the guy calling his plays, I never saw a coordinator handle Eli like he was ground chuck. Danny Spare Change finally kept the football off the turf and out of his opponent’s hands. Regardless, one guy beat arguably the best team of all time, and the other went 1-4-1 in the division a year ago. Philly, Dallas, and, hell, even Washington got in on the action, and that makes me especially nervous for the division’s prospects in 2023. However, the The Giants haven’t had a 1,000-yard receiver in Jones’ four years as the starter, with Darius Slayton’s 751 a couple of years ago coming the closest. 1 wide receiver in free agency or the draft, nobody has any idea what a go-to guy looks like for Jones. If you take away DJ’s career production on the ground, his stats and Manning’s are a push. The wins and losses favor Eli, who was 30-25 before year five, with a Super Bowl ring. In [Jones’ four years](https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/J/JoneDa05.htm) — 54 appearances, 53 of them starts — he has just over 13,300 yards total, 72 total TDs, and 56 turnovers. The funny thing is, if you look at the numbers, Daniel Jones was a better QB over his first four years than Manning. [New York Giants](https://deadspin.com/football/nfl/teams/new-york-giants/news) paid [Daniel](https://deadspin.com/nfl-new-york-giants-daniel-jones-contract-barkley-1850145294) Jones [his money](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LhI88tg1Gqg), and no one feels particularly great about it other than the Maras and Jones.

He can earn another $1.5 million of incentives and a $1.5 million escalator in each year for being a top-five quarterback. ET: A prior version of this article indicated that the $12 million in full guarantees for 2025 vested in 2024. Jones will earn $1 million in incentives and a $1 million escalator in each year for being a top-15 quarterback. At that same level over the life of the contract, he’ll earn $12.25 million of the available $35 million, pushing the total value to $172.25 million — an annual average of $43.06 million. We apologize for the error. The deal has $82 million fully guaranteed at signing, and a practical guarantee of $94 million. It actually vests in 2025. As it was explained to PFT, if Jones performs in 2023 as he did in 2022, he will earn another $1.75 million in 2023 incentives and another $1.75 million in 2024 escalators. He also has playoff incentives that add up to $5 million in incentives and $5 million in escalators. That’s $4 million in incentives and $4 million in escalators if he’s a top-five quarterback in any given season. 2025 base salary: $30 million, $23 million of which is guaranteed for injury at signing and $12 million of which converts to full guarantee at the start of the 2025 league year.

Presser Points: Daniel Jones, Joe Schoen discuss QB's new contract (Giants.com)

Quarterback Daniel Jones and General Manager Joe Schoen spoke to the media Wednesday following the QB signing a new contract with the Giants.

I'm curious if a year ago you thought you'd be here today – signing Daniel to a long-term contract and when you really thought that that's the direction that you wanted to go. And you of course have a spillover to the following year when the cap goes up. As it started getting closer, did you have to dig in and maybe learn a little bit about yourself in this negotiation as far as how to handle it, how to deal with the emotions? So, if we can take our medicine this year, I think that'll help us in 2024 and get out of the business of having a lot of dead money in any year. A: All the way to the end, you're not going to get everything you want in a negotiation. But I wanted to find a way to work it out, and that was the goal. A: I think it was always my goal to be back here and to be here long-term. So, at the end of the day, I was pleased to get it done. Did you have to slide that at all as the clock was ticking yesterday? Q: Did you have any conversations with the Giants about going out and getting a number one receiver, adding to the receiving corps? I think it was the overall deal and how it worked together and how they balanced each other out. I think it was more about the balance of the deal and putting all those things together in the best way we could.

With Daniel Jones making insane money, 2023 remains a massive ... (CBS News)

BOSTON -- Everyone in the football world knows that the 2023 season represents a significant fork in the road for Patriots quarterback Mac Jones.

With Patricia and Judge out of the picture for Mac, the opportunity to become a secure, extremely wealthy NFL quarterback clearly lies ahead. As a runner, obviously Daniel Jones is the far superior player -- though he's not in the Justin Fields, Lamar Jackson tier of mobile quarterbacks. Daniel Jones is now the proud owner of a contract that can be worth up to $195 million over four years but is guaranteed to pay him $82 million over the next two years. It's reminiscent, in a way, of the issues that teams had signing first-round draft picks, back in the days before the rookie wage scale. As a passer, Mac Jones is a better quarterback in every possible way. That's the whole benefit of being a billionaire. It was an impossible task on its own, and the fact that the offensive line (also coached by Patricia) couldn't even protect him added an extra degree of difficulty, seemingly just for good measure. A year after Kyler Murray got a $230.5 million contract with more than $100 million in fully guaranteed money, the quarterback market remains ... Really, Jones' contract with the Giants might be the breaking point in this market. What began with Jimmy Garoppolo and Kirk Cousins getting record deals has ballooned into Daniel Jones getting 82 million real American dollars given to him by a professional football team. Because not-all-that-good quarterback Daniel Jones was handed an absolutely baffling amount of money by the New York Giants. Succeed in a real offense coached by Bill O'Brien, and a long, sustainable NFL career awaits.

“Yeah, with the salary cap and the signing bonus, again, where we were, the way we did Daniel’s deal with the signing bonus, that spreads out over four years,” Schoen said. And then the proration of the signing bonus, which I think was $36 (million), so that’s where we have money there. So, the signing bonus allows you to spread the money over the length of the contract up to five years, and that’s how you’re able to lower the yearly amount that counts against the cap.” What Schoen did, something that separates him from his predecessor, Dave Gettleman, was to craft the deal with salary cap flexibility in mind. And we’re going to be convicted in what we’re doing. And I don’t want to speculate on how it would’ve gone if it was different. I wanted to find a way to work it out so that it was good for both sides, and it worked. We’re not going to worry about the outside noise. And it allowed us to have an opportunity to do what’s best for us going forward. For Jones, that came with a change in agencies, though he remained respectful of his former representatives. “It gives us a little more flexibility, and that’s an important component to it. So, I think that was a key component to it.

Daniel Jones excited about returning to 'special organization' (Giants.com)

The quarterback and team captain discussed his excitement about signing a new four-year contract with the Giants.

"And he means a ton to us as a player." It's an opportunity to play, but also an opportunity to go earn it and to prove it and continue to improve as a player and win a lot of football games. "I think it was always my goal to be back here and to be here long-term," Jones said. It definitely went up to the wire." "It pretty much came all the way down to the finish line, I think. "That's the goal," Schoen said. But it was always my goal and hope to be back." I wanted to find a way to work it out so that it was good for both sides, and it worked. So, it was always my goal and my hope that we'd find a way to work it out and that they'd bring me back. We're happy we were able to get it done." We had the goal the whole time to get it worked out." "I spoke to Eli before the process started and a little bit during," Jones said on a Zoom news conference today.
