Seahawks, QB Geno Smith Agree To Multi-Year Contract (profootballrumors.com)

The Seahawks have subscribed for more of quarterback Geno Smith, signing the veteran to a new multi-year contract, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network ...

In his first season as a starting quarterback in eight years, Smith led his team to the playoffs, earned a Pro Bowl bid, led the league in completion percentage, and won Comeback Player of the Year. It’s good to see Smith make so much out of his second opportunity to start in the NFL. Smith posted career-high numbers in passing yards (4,282) and passing touchdowns (30), and his interception total (11) was the lowest in any of his three seasons as a starter. After leading the Seahawks to the postseason in his first year as a full-time starter for the team, the 2022 NFL Comeback Player of the Year is coming back to Seattle. After making $17.55MM over the first ten years of his career, Smith is now set to double that in his contract’s $35MM average annual value (AAV) and nearly triple it in his first year of the deal. While many details are as of yet unknown, Smith is expected to make $52MM in his first year under the deal. Smith ended up winning Seattle’s starting job and rewarded the Seahawks with the best season of his career. It will be exciting to see how much more he can make of it in the next three years. Geno Smith and the Seahawks have agreed to a three-year, $105 million contract, sources told ESPN on Monday.

[New York Jets](/nfl/team/_/name/nyj/new-york-jets) out of West Virginia in 2013, Smith struggled with turnovers during his first two seasons, then lost his starting job in the summer of 2015 after he was punched by a teammate in an infamous locker room altercation, landing on injured reserve with a broken jaw. When Smith tossed two touchdown passes to beat Wilson and the Broncos in Week 1, it marked the NFL's longest gap between opening-day starts since 1971. The Seahawks re-signed Smith in April, three months after he was arrested on suspicion of DUI. But for now, Smith will become the only quarterback the Seahawks have under contract for 2023. The Seahawks have the fifth and 20th overall picks, as well as two second-rounders. Playing on a one-year, $3.5 million deal, Smith led the league in completion percentage (69.8%), finished sixth in Total QBR (60.8) and finished fourth in touchdown passes (30) to lead the Seahawks to an unexpected playoff berth as the NFC's seventh seed.

By keeping the length to a minimum, Seattle was able to maintain long-term flexibility in the event that 2022 was an anomaly for Smith. It's a calculated risk in avoiding the franchise tag for what could end up being a one-year wonder. Seattle still has not ruled out drafting a quarterback with the fifth overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, which makes the contract length on Smith's deal something to monitor. Smith's deal will put him right on the cusp of the league's 10 highest-paid quarterbacks, alongside fellow NFC quarterbacks like Kirk Cousins ($35 million AAV) and Jared Goff ($33.5 million AAV). Geno Smith is staying put in the Emerald City after a breakout year in 2022. This new contract will pay Smith an average of $35 million per year.

He was traded to the Broncos along with a fourth-round pick on March 16, 2022, while three players and five draft picks went back to the Seahawks. Not only did Smith outplay Wilson, he also led the Seahawks to a 9-8 record in 17 starts and a playoff berth. Nearly a year after the trade, it's clear that the Seahawks won this trade. Below is a breakdown of what the Broncos will owe Wilson over the next six seasons, per Seattle got a strong return for their franchise quarterback and was able to avoid a true rebuild because of it. Meanwhile, Smith surprised everyone in Seattle, leading the league in completion percentage and earning a Pro Bowl nod for the first time in his career. He received $161 million in guarantees as a part of the contract. He was supposed to be a big upgrade for the Broncos, and they paid him commensurately. Not much was expected of Smith when Seattle named him the starting quarterback ahead of the campaign. Either way, Seahawks fans will largely be happy to see the terms of Smith's new deal. The contract will pay him $35 million in average annual value (AAV) tied for the 10th-most lucrative contract among NFL quarterbacks with Kirk Cousins. Analysis: What placing franchise tag on Geno Smith would mean for ... (The Seattle Times)

What is Geno Smith looking for and what might the Seahawks be willing to give him? Those have been closely-guarded secrets so far.

That deal could serve as a template for what Smith wants from the Seahawks, though as Pro Football Talk reported later Monday, Carr’s contract numbers were initially somewhat inflated. Teams can continue to negotiate with their own tagged player until July 17, after which, a player can only play on the tag. Seattle has rarely used the tag since Schneider arrived in 2010, most recently on defensive end Frank Clark in 2019. Usually when you’re talking about larger numbers, they take a little bit more time. Tagged players can negotiate with other teams until they sign the tender, at which point the salary becomes fully guaranteed. Regardless, Smith may see that deal — not only the overall average of $37.5 million but a bonus more than triple what he has already made in the NFL and also basically be about double of the tag — as at least the floor for what he would want from Seattle.

Rost's Seahawks Breakdown: What's next after locking up Geno Smith (710 ESPN Seattle)

The Seahawks took care of their QB situation by extending Geno Smith, but as Stacy Rost explains, it may not rule them out from drafting a QB.

Worse still is that a number of holes are opening in the front seven with defensive tackle Poona Ford and linebacker Cody Barton set to become free agents and linebacker Jordyn Brooks still recovering from a torn ACL. A player like Florida’s Anthony Richardson, who boosted his own draft stock with an impressive combine showing, could be available in the latter half of the top 10 if Seattle were to trade back. And with free agency just over a week away, the Seahawks will waste little time addressing it. The reward simultaneously gives Seattle security on offense in 2023 and sparks a debate about whether Smith can lead the team to a Super Bowl. Now comes deals for pending free agents (does Brooks’ injury mean bringing back Barton for 2023?), and potential restructures (seven players will have cap hits of $10 million or more) and cuts. “The position we’re in, we are totally connected to the quarterbacks that are coming out,” Carroll said last week at the NFL Scouting Combine when asked whether the team could draft a quarterback fifth overall. We’re still waiting on details about Smith’s cap hit under his new deal, but we know at least part of this will go toward drafted players later this spring. The Seahawks have secured a Pro Bowl veteran at quarterback. Smith, who signed a one-year, $3.5 million deal last March, earned his first Pro Bowl nod and was named Comeback Player of the Year in 2022. Geno Smith and the Seahawks agreed to terms on a contract extension, reported to be a three-year, $105 million deal by The Score’s Jordan Schultz. The average annual value works out to $35 million, or a few million north of this year’s $32.4 million franchise tag for QBs. They also have the No.

Geno Smith's new contract is a win for both him and the Seahawks (Deadspin)

Of course the franchise got the better end of the deal, but Smith can make a lot of money this year.

If the Seahawks franchised him following the 2023 season a 2024 franchise tag would have been brutal, especially if that season ended without a quarterback they were confident in to replace him. With only one stellar season under his belt of course the Seahawks were going to entice Smith to forgo the franchise tag by offering him a large sum of money upfront. With much of his money front-loaded, if a quarterback the Seahawks select in April is ready to play at some point in 2023, or even if it takes until Week 1 of 2024, they will be able to manage Smith’s contract.

Geno Smith has a new contract from the Seahawks. On Tuesday, Pete Carroll shared his thoughts on Smith and what the deal means for Seattle.

We have a lot of stuff that we have to get done, we have a lot of decisions to make. We know that if he’s able to come back and do that, he’s gonna have a great season and we’re gonna be in great shape and we’re gonna have a real chance to be at our best. So I think that was a real combination of thinking that worked out for us.” It’s a really strong part of the contract,” Carroll said. A good deal for our club, and I think it sends a really good message, too, to everybody on the outside that this is a good place and things are going in the right direction. Check out the full conversation in the video below, and after that we’ll detail a bit of what Carroll had to say. He backed it up with his words, he backed it up with his actions, and his teammates know. Smith will earn $28 million in Year 1 of the contract, which has $30 million worth of incentives. This is really fun because you can pretty much predict what’s going to happen with four different choices (before you), so which one is it? Due to his play and the fact that he was a pending free agent, Smith “His view, his perspective throughout was so clear and consistent, and he was so confident and he backed it up. “And both Geno’s representation and our guys just didn’t let that happen.”

Seahawks Coach Pete Carroll Talks Geno Smith Extension On ... (Seahawks.com)

Pete Carroll joined the Brock & Salk Show a day after the Seahawks and Geno Smith agreed to terms on a contract extension.

He has worked with a lot of people, and a lot of people love what he does and what he brings, so I think it's a really special element…. "Whatever we do, he's going to take it in stride," Carroll said. "He'll be the senior assistant and passing game coordinator." Carroll went on to say of the quarterback class, "These guys are really talented. That hire won't be stepping into the exact same role as Desai, who was the associate head coach-defense, and Carroll added that Karl Scott will take on more responsibilities in his second season with the Seahawks. The reason the Seahawks would consider a quarterback has nothing to do with their confidence in Smith, but rather with the rare opportunity the Seahawks have holding the No. We have a lot of stuff to get done, we have a lot of decisions to make, this extraordinary draft coming up has been ongoing too." "We can do whatever we need to do, which is a whole other discussion that's really exciting. We can plan and we can plan, but until we knock the big one in the boat—the other things that happened, Jason (Myers) was a really big deal, (Nick) Bellore was a really big deal for us, Phil Haynes, those were all really significant steps along the way that were all planned, and they've come off like we'd hoped, so now there's a whole next sequence of things that are going to come together, so here we go." As for that draft, Carroll reiterated what he said at the NFL Scouting Combine last week when it came to Seattle's future at quarterback, which was that the Seahawks could very well pick a quarterback early in the first round even after getting a deal done with Smith. He backed it up with his words and backed it up with his actions, and his teammates know. Commentary: Three thoughts on Seahawks' new deal with Geno Smith (The Spokesman-Review)

First, the Seahawks gave him a chance. Then, the fans gave him some chants. And now one of the NFL's all-time comeback stories has resulted in Geno Smith ...

Smith isn’t Hurts or Burrow in the sense that those players’ teams are (likely) envisioning a decade-plus marriage with said youngsters. Three years isn’t a long time – and it’s possible the Seahawks could abandon Smith after Year two without incurring a financial penalty. But regardless of the details that come to light, this is a lot of money for a 10-year veteran who has had just one truly productive season. Seahawks general manager John Schneider is generally shrewd about giving the front office financial flexibility, and it’s doubtful the Seahawks would agree to a contract that significantly hamstrung their ability to add impactful talent. He consistently is one of the more humble, genuine and engaging athletes in professional sports – traits that were highlighted over the past year or so. What once seemed impossible became something inevitable over the past few months, as Smith’s stunning season practically obligated the Seahawks to agree with him to a lucrative contract.

Geno Smith has a new contract from the Seahawks, but Brock Huard says that likely doesn't prevent them from drafting a QB in April.

“You’re obviously going to draft a quarterback – you need another young guy in that room with Geno – but to me that does not have to be somebody at No. [Rost’s Seahawks Breakdown: What’s next after locking up Geno Smith](https://sports.mynorthwest.com/1745510/rosts-seahawks-breakdown-whats-next-after-locking-up-geno-smith/) “And I think this Geno deal makes me lean that much more there. if they love that guy, this Geno deal, in fact, on paper probably sets up pretty well to be able to (draft someone to learn under Smith),” Huard said. “But if there was no Anthony Richardson (in this draft) and it was Will Levis, trust me, everybody would say, ‘My gosh, he’s an Adonis.’ And that ball rips out of his hands and he’s got an ease with which he throws it everywhere.” “But if we love someone at 5 and they’re sitting there? Do you want to give him every bit of help you can with a premier defensive player at No. Or do you want to safeguard and build for your future and use one of those picks – a first-round pick even – on drafting his replacement?” Will his 2023 backup come in the form of a draft pick? And if so, how high do you go to get that guy? The Seahawks also have some of the best capital in next month’s draft as they hold the No. This is really fun because you can pretty much predict what’s going to happen with four different choices (before you), so which one is it?
