Derek Carr immediately makes Jaguars vs. Saints 2023 away game ... (Black & Teal)

Quarterback Derek Carr has signed with the New Orleans Saints after being released by the Las Vegas Raiders. He'll face the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2023.

But one thing is sure, the Jaguars had better be ready for them if they don’t want to leave Caesars Superdome with a loss in 2023. On the other hand, Jacskonville showed in 2022 that they can put on points on the scoreboard at a high rate, so this will be an intriguing matchup to watch. Working in Jacksonville’s favor is that Carr will struggle if he doesn’t have a good supporting cast. On the other hand, he’s only made the playoffs once in his career and leads the league in lost fumbles since 2014 with 36. Carr had met with the New York Jets earlier this month but didn’t reach a deal because they’re also reportedly interested in trading for Aaron Rodgers. Free agent quarterback Derek Carr and the New Orleans Saints are finalizing terms of a long-term deal, according to Monday reports.

With NY Jets, Derek Carr could emulate former 2-time SB champ (Jets X-Factor)

The New York Jets' Hall of Fame promise for Derek Carr is not so far-fetched when comparing him to this likely future Hall of Famer.

If they decide Carr is the guy, there’s a model for him to follow to Big Apple immortality. There’s another similarity that Eli has to Carr: he was also not a good cold-weather QB despite having played his entire career with the Giants. Obviously, the best way to compete for a ring in the NFL is to have a Patrick Mahomes. He has a tendency to rise to the occasion. He’s only had one playoff game to work with so far, just as Stafford had before he was traded to the Lions. And yes, Manning didn’t turn the ball over (he had a combined two interceptions in those eight playoff games in 2007 and 2011). In fact, he never finished in the top-five in quarterback DVOA in his career and finished in the top 10 only three times in 15 starting seasons. It’s obviously difficult in the AFC, especially when you have to contend with Josh Allen twice every year and likely some combination of Mahomes, Joe Burrow, Justin Herbert, Trevor Lawrence, and Lamar Jackson. Carr is by no means an elite quarterback, but he’s been an above-average one for most of his career. But more than that, the Jets have a deeper talent pool at many positions than the 2021 Rams did. First of all, they have reasonable facsimiles in Garrett Wilson, Quinnen Williams, and Sauce Gardner, players who may be younger and have less time with elite status but can also take over a game. Yes, Eli’s career began four years prior to Ryan’s, which gave Ryan the benefit of extra seasons as the league progressed toward a passing league.

The Jets made a strong push to woo Derek Carr to New York this offseason. The pitch came up short.

For now, the team's quarterback situation can certainly be described as unresolved. The Jets went 7-10 last season with the 29th-ranked scoring offense and 25th-ranked overall offense, as the trio of Zach Wilson, Mike White and Joe Flacco failed to provide a baseline level of quarterback performance. As for the Jets' next move, there are some long shots like Aaron Rodgers or Lamar Jackson.

All in all, I don't see Carr with QB1 ceiling in New Orleans given their situation and his history of production. They currently don't have a quarterback, or at least not one they've committed to. Despite his 2022 struggles, I believe Carr has enough left in the tank to keep Olave and at least one more pass catcher afloat and relevant for fantasy next season. Winners and losers of QB Derek Carr's decision to sign with New ... (USA TODAY)

Derek Carr's decision to sign with the Saints changes the complexion of the NFC South, which before looked like the NFL's most wide-open division.

2 and 4 in the draft better be ready to pay up to pounce on their passer of choice – or be comfortable with multiple options should either stand pat. Each of the four organizations in this division entered the offseason with plausible hopes of capturing the 2023 crown – chiefly due to the others' uncertainty behind center. Instead, a franchise that's seemingly desperate for a young passer – and guided by an owner, David Tepper, who's not afraid to pay the price to get what he wants – still is lurking as a threat to leapfrog the two AFC South teams in a trade. While bringing on Carr makes New Orleans a postseason threat in 2023, there's a clear ceiling on this outfit that falls well below the likes of the NFC's elite of the Philadelphia Eagles, Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers. in a lurch, as the next best free-agent option for the veteran signal-caller they seek might be Jimmy Garoppolo – a somewhat suspect solution and one New York could have to outbid the Raiders to obtain. A lot more opportunities could be on the way for the talented second-year receiver, as Carr has shown he's not afraid to feed his favorite pass catcher. Taking on the 2022 edition of the Saints looked to be an imposing task for whoever served as Sean Payton's successor, as an inauspicious quarterback setup was one of several problems areas. The Saints were never a serious threat to turn the reins over to a rookie, so Chicago still has a host of teams inside the top 10 that might have to fight each other off for the top selection. Given the overall state of the NFC, New Orleans can plant itself squarely in the conference's second tier of contenders. Not bad for a franchise that not long ago looked to be stuck in passer purgatory. 10 overall draft pick in the hands of the Philadelphia Eagles, New Orleans is the clear short-term beneficiary of Carr's ugly split the Raiders. 14, as well as the Saints, who needed some resolution at quarterback with Andy Dalton set to become a free agent.

NFL power rankings ahead of free agency, updated after Saints sign ... (Saints Wire)

The New Orleans Saints got their guy in free agent quarterback Derek Carr, so how does this pickup change their perception around the league?

A stronger rushing attack could do a lot to balance things out for Buffalo and help them control the pace of play in the postseason. On the other hand, Jalen Hurts is still playing on his rookie contract and Philadelphia has the draft capital to reload in a hurry. The Bills seem to have it all — an opportunistic defense, an electrifying quarterback, and a passionate fanbase — so why can’t they seal the deal in the playoffs? Doug Pederson proved to everyone how coaching matters in the NFL, inheriting a team Urban Meyer couldn’t prepare for Sundays and stunning the world with a comeback win in the playoffs. But they finally have the resources to get a franchise quarterback after burning their bridge with Matt Ryan, and head coach Arthur Smith has kept them in a lot of games they had no business winning. One of the best stories in the NFL needs to put up an impressive sequel. He finally earned the multiyear contract extension he’s been working so hard for all these years and got the Seahawks to express their trust in him for all the world to see. And if he can at least get the Broncos offense to a league-average scoring output after their miserable 2022 season, they’ll quickly become a power in the AFC West. The Vikings just achieved the fakest winning record the NFL has ever seen, and they got exposed in the playoffs because of it. No team needs an upgrade at quarterback and is in worse shape at acquiring one than the Commanders; offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy has his work cut out for him under center, but at least he has ample receiving talent to work with in Terry McLaurin, Jahan Dotson, and Curtis Samuel. The Texans are a talent-poor roster, but they made maybe the best hire of the offseason in head coach DeMeco Ryans, who has assembled a bright staff around him. This roster needs a ton of work, and they’re already working to get more picks in this year’s draft to engineer a turnaround.

Ex-Raider Derek Carr agrees to 4-year contract with Saints (Boston.com)

Former Raiders quarterback Derek Carr has signed a deal with the Saints after being released by Las Vegas in February.

Since 2006, the Saints have made the playoffs nine times and won a Super Bowl, but all of those postseason appearances came with franchise all-time passer Drew Brees at quarterback and Payton as coach. Carr indicated during the week of the Pro Bowl that a talk with Peyton Manning encouraged him to explore free agency. “I’m just looking for teams that have made that decision consistently that they’ll do whatever it takes to put a winning program out there,” Carr said on Feb. “From afar and when we played him as an opponent, I saw Derek’s development into one of the most productive quarterbacks in the National Football League.” The knock on Carr was that his tenure as the Raiders’ starting QB produced just two playoff appearances and no postseason victories. 14 after he declined to waive the no-trade clause in his contract.

Jimmy Garoppolo can jump for joy at Saints' contract with Derek Carr (Niner Noise)

Free-agent quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo has to absolutely love the amount of money the Saints are giving to Derek Carr on his new contract.

A bad market for free-agent quarterbacks could have resulted in annual averages not exceeding $25 million. If he’s slightly behind at an average of $35 million per year, it’s also a major win. And Garoppolo has to thank both Carr and the Saints for making that happen. Garoppolo’s camp benefits from a number of factors this offseason. [Saints](https://whodatdish.com/) are inking Carr to a four-year deal worth up to $150 million with $100 million of it guaranteed: Free-agent quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo has to absolutely love the amount of money the Saints are giving to Derek Carr on his new contract.

[Alvin Kamara](/player/alvin-kamara) ended last season as the RB22 in fantasy points per game and saw 223 carries along with 77 targets. He’s only finished as a QB1 in fantasy points per game one time in nine seasons and it was right at the cutoff at QB12 (17.2 pts per game). By waiting a year, and diminishing Carr's value thanks to a lackluster pairing with Josh McDaniels, the Raiders got literally nothing in return for their Pro Bowl starter. The Raiders should actually be commended for their willingness to cut ties in search of a better long-term answer, even if said answer doesn't arrive in 2023.
