Oscars 2023: Tackling male grief with gallows humour in An Irish ... (BBC News)

The short film contender sees two brothers reunite as they try to come to terms with their mum's death.

[Rukayat Moibi from MySohoTimes wrote](https://mysohotimes.co.uk/2023/02/03/an-irish-goodbye-review-a-heart-warming-film-about-loss-my-soho-times/): "An Irish Goodbye is an ambitious picture that, in a satisfying and heart-warming sense, almost feels as if it could be outside of the short film genre." "We spoke about the idea of the character having Down's syndrome... "It was the idea of two people who see the world very differently and processed emotions very differently. He drives the plot." "Both films are about men struggling or badly coping with with grief. "There was an interesting juxtaposition between what was a very typically ferocious, brotherly kind of relationship, quite combative, as they were watching the game. And then the younger brother, who wears his heart on his sleeve and has this superhuman capacity for empathy. "As our careers went on, we were writing more and more and acting less. There was just something really poignant about the relationship." Lorcan is distinctly unimpressed with the idea. "I would love to meet Tom Cruise. I would love to meet Robert De Niro as we have something in common.

Looking Back at Oscar's 95 Years of Growing Pains (Variety)

The Academy changed the way people see movies, but it had nothing to do with awards.

In 1927, there was a plan to add a group of “fan members” to the Acad and to publish a journal aimed at moviegoers. And there was an outcry when the press exaggerated the number of older members who were asked to step aside. Davis notes that the word international “exceeded any realistic grasp for the infant academy and, in any case, some of its founders strongly preferred that the org restrict its focus to the U.S. Davis writes that when the group was forming in the first quarter of 1927, one proposed name was the Intl. As Davis writes about the handwringing by members, “major awards went not just to foreign but to highbrow, artistic pictures.” It’s a complaint that the public has aired ever since. “The biggest surprise in my research was how impoverished the Academy was through its early history,” Davis tells Variety. • There have been modern cries to shorten the TV broadcast by presenting some awards off-camera. They were discouraged “by the steady drop in membership numbers, by the escalating financial problems, and by the organization’s failure to establish a vital role in the evolving industry.” Eddie Cantor, second president of SAG, summed up the feeling of the new guilds by frequently proclaiming in his speeches, “The Academy must be destroyed!” Davis tells Variety that 1933 was the rock bottom for AMPAS. Mayer, whose goal was “to stymie the formation of craft unions,” Davis writes. But people in the industry hated AMPAS.

The Oscars 2023: Complete Guide (Screen Rant)

Here's Screen Rant's complete guide to the biggest event on the movie Awards circuit, the 95th annual Academy Awards AKA The Oscars 2023.

At the 2023 Oscars, Elvis is nominated for eight awards, including Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Film Editing, and Best Sound. Best Picture and Best International Feature are among the awards that All Quiet on the Western Front is nominated for at the 95th Academy Awards. Best Picture nominee Tár tells the fictional story of Lydia Tár, a renowned and ruthless composer whose world falls apart as she prepares to record a career-changing symphony. Spielberg is a frontrunner for the Academy Award for Best Director, which could give him his third win in the category after Schindler's List in 1994 and Saving Private Ryan in 1999. The film has a brilliant feel-bad ending with compelling performances and writing that are incredibly deserving of their Oscar nods. The various actors, narratives, production history, and critical reception of each movie aren't easy to navigate, so we've compiled the key details for all 2023 Oscars movies to help out. Netflix's German-language anti-war drama is up for nine awards at the 2023 Oscars. The predictions for the Oscars are primarily based on the preceding nominations and wins from other voting bodies throughout the 2023 Awards season, such as the Golden Globe Awards, Critics' Choice Awards, the BAFTAs, and the upcoming PGAS and WGAs. A few of the big category winner predictions already seem to be a lock, such as Best Supporting Actor, while others continue to be close races. Oscars 2023: Predicted and preferred winners (The Maneater)

Here's a rundown of likely winners for the 95th Academy Awards and who deserves the award. Oscars season is upon us, and as such, many crit.

“The Banshees of Inisherin” is the best choice for the award. These are the signs of a great director, in a film that is an ode to directors as artists. Of the nominees, “Everything Everywhere All at Once” is extremely popular and has the most nominations. Before diving in, it should be noted that many directors were snubbed for this award, perhaps no more than Sarah Polley for “Women Talking.” Similar to other categories, the academy has a tendency to vote with the Critics Choice Association in this category. This sense of development is why the film deserves the best picture. In a film so full of space as “The Banshees of Inisherin,” Farrell was given room to act beyond simply delivering lines. Tied for second are “The Banshees of Inisherin” and “All Quiet on the Western Front” with nine each. Brendan Fraser’s win for Best Actor in the Critics Choice Awards is a strong indicator that he will be the winner of the Oscars. The academy has voted with the Critics Choice Association in this category 80% of the time in the past 10 years. The academy’s considerations will likely come down to Austin Butler’s portrayal of Elvis and Brendan Fraser’s performance in “The Whale.” That said, this category — as with the other two — comes down to two actors: Brendan Gleeson and Ke Huy Quan. The Academy Awards are one of those cultural touchstones for the American film industry.

This is the mother of all comebacks. At this point, you would think the film will turn into a race against time to save the multiverse from the supervillain. For Tupaki experiences every reality all at once, can manipulate matter, and has plans to erase every reality from existence. Despite being labeled as an indie film, Everything Everywhere All at Once became a commercial success, with Michelle Yeoh starring as Evelyn Quran Wang, an overwhelmed Chinese immigrant living with her teenage daughter and timid husband. Oh, and she has to regularly visit the IRS office and face the dead-eyed gaze of inspector Deirdre Beaubeirdre (a brilliantly bureaucratic Jamie Lee Curtis). The film will likely not do a Return of the King — the conclusion to Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings trilogy that clinched 11 trophies out of 11 nominations at the 76th Academy Awards.

So should win, "Everything Everywhere All At Once" and will win, "Banshees Of Inisherin." So Stephen is a should win and will win for "Everything Everywhere All At Once." But will win, I think, is "The Fabelmans" because of the fact that Stephen Spielberg, at this point, is such a institution within the academy, and this is a very personal film. WELDON: And another movie that has a lot of heart and is also a spectacle is "Everything Everywhere All At Once." And there's a lot of feeling that the industry is at a crossroads, where there are movies that make a ton of money at the box office, but they tend to be these large-scale, tentpole, hundreds of millions of dollars, intellectual property driven, your "Top Gun: Maverick," your "Avatar: The Way Of Water" - those movies cost a fortune and they are kind of pre-existing franchises. And those four films I mentioned - "Avatar: Way of Water," "Top Gun: Maverick," "Elvis" and "Everything Everywhere All At Once" - what they offered was the kind of spectacle that you go out to see movies for that got a lot of butts back in seats. Well, there is a clip going around of Steven Spielberg thanking Tom Cruise for, like, getting people back to the theaters for "Top Gun." Well, first up is "Avatar: The Way Of Water." Jane Campion won for "Power Of The Dog." And I think it's been particularly nice this year that the whole cast of "Everything Everywhere All At Once" - Michelle Yeoh, who is this longtime decorated actress. As you mentioned, there have been a bunch of theaters that closed this year in some of the - from some of the big chains. It is that time of year again when the who's who of Hollywood bask in the glow of their own work.
