Immanuel Quickley led the Knicks to a double-overtime win over the Celtics, marking New York's ninth consecutive victory.
The Knicks, however, would go on a 7-0 run, the Celtics would not die, though, and tied the game late on a Jaylen Brown and-1 to send the game into overtime. Randle capped off an incredible 9-0 Knicks run with a buzzer-beater three-pointer to give the Knicks an 88-87 going into the fourth quarter. The Celtics would not go away though as they stayed within striking distance of the Knicks and were able to tie the game with under four minutes to play. The Celtics would finish an ugly second quarter on an 11-0 run to take a 61-54 lead into the half. Riding an eight-game win streak, the Knicks got off to a quick start in the opening quarter. Despite Jalen Brunson missing the game with foot soreness, the Knicks won a double-overtime thriller 131-129 for their ninth consecutive victory thanks in large part to Immanuel Quickley and his outstanding game.

The Celtics had no answer for Immanuel Quickley, who started in place of the injured Jalen Brunson and lifted the Knicks to a double-overtime victory.
Immanuel Quickley scores a career-high 38 points, including seven in the second overtime, in New York's win in Boston.
Knicks: Quickley hit a 3 for the game’s first basket, raising his fingers in celebration. Coming off an embarrassing home loss in their last game when they blew a 28-point lead against Brooklyn, the Celtics had opened a 14-point edge midway into the third quarter. Randle was whistled for a technical by referee Brett Nansel when he was showing what happened after being called for an offensive foul.
The Celtics trailed by 11 in the 4th quarter and nearly pulled off the comeback.
The play took a long time to develop, but Tatum eventually got the ball and drove past Barrett. After Randle hit two free throws to give the Knicks a 113-110 lead, the Celtics had a decision about going for two or three on the final possession. The Knicks came right back, and who else but Immanuel Quickley hit a 10-foot floater to tie the game. They opted to go to Jaylen in the post, who backed down Quentin Grimes and hit a one-handed push shot, got fouled, and hit the free throw. The Celtics looked done, but Horford responded with a three the next possession, and Smart, who had a rough shooting game, nailed a corner three with 18 seconds remaining. On the next Celtic possession, Smart drove to the paint and dumped it off to Tatum. Jaylen missed an elbow jumper then Quickley hit a floater, Josh Hart converted a layup, and Randle splashed a three to give the Knicks a 111-104 lead. The Celtics got two clutch offensive rebounds, the first by Grant and second by Jaylen. Mike Muscala got called for an offensive foul setting a screen and Barrett came back with a three to give the Knicks a 98-89 lead with 9:04 remaining. Horford broke the run with a right-wing three and the Knicks called timeout, hoping to halt any Boston offensive flow. Grant’s three at the 6:22 mark gave them a 77-63 lead, then Quickley answered with a three and Mitchell Robinson finished an alley-oop. After Jaylen Brown hit a pull-up transition three and Boston took a 42-35 lead, they seemingly had all the momentum.
New York Knicks guard Jalen Brunson has officially been listed as OUT ahead of the team's matchup against the Boston Celtics.
Considered by many to have been an All-Star snub this season, Brunson has averaged 23.9 points and 6.2 assists per game for New York. Though he would finish the game, it’s clear that his ankle has caused him significant discomfort ever since. However, the New York star was later [ruled out](https://www.nbcsportsedge.com/basketball/nba/player-news/11090526?category=headlines) due to a left foot injury.

Reflecting back on the Knicks-Celtics thriller, CBA talks and why NBA teams are increasingly taking note of Brandin Podziemski.
[Jaylen Brown](https://theathletic.com/nba/player/jaylen-brown-EAiBkBxmqCrObLg7/), for instance, might have blanched at extending his deal in the summer of 2023 for a starting salary of $36.7 million since he could make a projected $44.2 million on a max deal in free agency. (Many scouts planned to hit big college games this weekend and then fly to Vegas on Monday for the WCC semifinals.) Fortunately, at 23-9, the Broncos may be good enough to snag an NIT bid and allow evaluators a reprieve. (If you’re wondering about doing away with the limit entirely, there are good reasons to have one in place; the potential for cap-circumventing shenanigans gets more real the higher the limit goes.) and it appears part of that deal would fix two vexing areas of the current cap environment: the allowable raises in extensions and the bands of luxury-tax penalties. Adopting the Elam Ending for overtime seems like the next obvious move for the league to kill multiple birds (game length, player health and safety, excitement) with one stone. (The most common: Teams intentionally fouling when opponents are three points from the target score; an elegant solution for this is a one-shot-plus-ball penalty for Elam Ending fouls in the bonus.) New York’s [RJ Barrett](https://theathletic.com/nba/player/rj-barrett-waDoLQ8ePOGskbya/) played 50, and Boston’s [Jayson Tatum](https://theathletic.com/nba/player/jayson-tatum-3O7MInr4zV5KKhZ5/) 49. Even the [Atlanta Hawks](https://theathletic.com/nba/team/hawks/), castigated for their league-worst 3-point rate, still take them at a rate that would have led the league in 2013-14 and ranked in the top 10 as recently as 2017-18. From a sports science perspective, you can almost immediately see the advantage; it removes the near unlimited minutes cap that teams can face in multi-overtime situations, presenting a vexing decision of whether to press on and push player loads into the stratosphere or punt on a winnable game that’s sitting right there for the taking. (This is one of many reasons load management is not a one-size-fits-all business.) Game fatigue didn’t seem to be an issue for Quickley, skipping around the court in his 55th minute after repeatedly blowing past Boston’s The NBA has actually been at the forefront of this, using analytics and camera technologies heavily in its evaluation and training of officials. [NBA](https://theathletic.com/nba/) team should have an “analytics guy.” Pro sports have moved on to much more vexing managerial challenges; in fact, the problems teams are trying to solve have quickly evolved beyond the capability of single individuals to solve them.
The Celtics dropped another game to the Knicks on Sunday, falling in double overtime despite big games from Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown.
The Celtics needed either more time (so Tatum could kick out to Horford) or a clear side of the court for Tatum and Brown to operate. Trailing by two with 22 seconds left, the Celtics forced a shot-clock violation and brought the ball up the floor, but Tatum and Grant Williams seemed to get the play confused, and Mazzulla called timeout with 10 seconds remaining as a frustrated Tatum stormed back to the bench. But it’s kind of our style of play, just trying to get the best shot every time down the court.” On the one hand, the Celtics won’t go anywhere if their stars are exhausted when the postseason rolls around. The 1-seed would have to hope they wear each other down, because neither team will be an easy out. Generating good 3-point shots is crucial to the Celtics’ offense. “We’re still in a great position and we still got time to figure it out — and we’re going to. And I probably had a little more time than I thought.” Unfortunately for the Celtics, Al Horford was in the corner on Tatum’s side of the floor, and Mitchell Robinson helped off him to make Tatum’s layup attempt more difficult. Even if they don’t make a deep run, the playoffs create problems that drive things that happened in March from our minds. They have significantly more big-game pedigree than teams like the Knicks and Cavaliers. They have played well against the best teams in the Eastern Conference.
New York Knicks' Immanuel Quickley (5) drives past Los Angeles Lakers' Dennis Schroder (17), of Germany, during the first half of an NBA basketball game ...
Yes, the free throw shooting remains an issue as the Knicks rank 21st over the last month, shooting just 73.9% from the line in the fourth quarter. Immanuel Quickley is second with 9.3 minutes per game, which is significant since they are two of the team’s best defenders and have the first and third-best plus/minus in the fourth quarter, with Brunson slotted in second. While opponents are still taking 8.9 threes in the quarter (8th-most), New York is holding them to just 29% shooting from beyond the arc, which ranks fourth. We mentioned above that he was shooting just 28.6% in the clutch and had 13 turnovers prior to February 7th, the most of any player in the NBA over that span. RJ Barrett has seen his fourth-quarter minutes cut to 6.3 per game over the last month, allowing for more reliable defenders to be on the court. They have the 6th-best fourth quarter plus/minus while ranking 5th in fourth quarter rebounding and 19th in assists. [According to RAPTOR](https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/nba-player-ratings/), they are the three worst defenders of the team’s rotation players, so having them all on the court at the end of games was a problem. Heading into their February 7th game with Orlando, they ranked 23rd in fourth-quarter scoring, 23rd in field goal percentage, 25th in assists, 18th in plus/minus, and 27th in opponents’ rebounds allowed in the fourth quarter. This stat is a clear indicator of passes setting up an open look since the shot is coming directly off of a pass. After being treated as an afterthought in their own city for the better part of a decade, the Knicks just beat the Celtics for the third time this season and are now one game behind the Cavaliers for 4th in the Eastern Conference. While that was skewed by total minutes, he still averaged the 8th-most turnovers of any player who has appeared in double-digit “clutch” situations, which presented a real problem for the Knicks. He has a lower fourth-quarter turnover rate during that span than teammates Isaiah Hartenstein and RJ Barrett.
The Knicks won their ninth game in a row thanks to an epic double-OT win over the Celtics to headline Sunday's action.
Paul George scored a game-high 42 points and led the fourth-quarter comeback, while Kawhi Leonard poured in 34 of his own to aid the effort. [Ja Morant-less Grizzlies](https://www.sbnation.com/nba/2023/3/4/23625271/ja-morant-suspended-gun-allegations-video-memphis-grizzlies), the Clippers were able to rebound in the fourth, winning that frame by a 38-17 margin, and ultimately regaining the same lead they held at halftime for good. Oh, and the [team plane got struck by lightning](https://www.latimes.com/sports/clippers/story/2023-02-26/clippers-paul-george-kawhi-leonard-nuggets-recap). Paolo Banchero (26 points) and Franz Wagner (24 points) paved the way for Orlando, but they were no match for Damian Lillard — who else? For the second time in three games, Charlotte failed to crack 100 points, and no one on Charlotte’s roster scored more than 17 points on the night. For the Lakers — still half a game out of the play-in tournament — to make their way into the postseason, Anthony Davis needs to play at the level he played at on Sunday against the Warriors. Jayson Tatum (40) and Jaylen Brown (29) led the way for the Celtics, who have now lost two in a row and suddenly find themselves a game and a half back from the Bucks atop the East. Julius Randle (31 points and nine rebounds) and RJ Barrett (29 points and 11 rebounds) were huge for the Knicks. Okay, so, in case you somehow missed it, the end to this one got a little bonkers. Last weekend’s epic tilt between the Kings and the Clippers — you know, the one that went to two overtimes and ended 176-175, in the Kings’ favor — was probably the game of the year, but Sunday’s matchup between New York and Boston gives it a run for its money. I try to assess what order to put them in as the slate of games unfolds, and occasionally, one or two games jump out as the obvious best ones from the night. In the end, after more bucket-trading and more playoff-worthy moments, it was Quickley’s night.
