Celtics' Joe Mazzulla downplays collapse loss to Nets: 'I think this is ... (masslive.com)

The Celtics played a great opening 16 minutes, but that was it as they blew a 28-point lead to the Nets.

We let them get going, let them get some confidence and at that moment, when the momentum shifted, they became hard to stop.” The Nets flipped the vibes around as the Celtics were instead the ones wondering what went wrong by the final buzzer. Once Brooklyn took the lead at the 6:11 mark in the third quarter, it never gave Boston back the lead. There were also some defensive lulls that allowed the Nets back into the game in the first place. So it’s about flipping the page. Mazzulla said his team respected the Nets, which is why they were able to build such a commanding lead. [Massachusetts online sports betting](https://www.masslive.com/betting/massachusetts/)is coming soon. “We have to be able to learn from it,” Mazzulla said. Mazzulla pointed to that postgame, which is why he said he hopes this isn’t a trend for the Celtics. The Celtics led by 21 points after the first quarter, tacking on a few more points as the Nets weren’t hitting their 3-pointers. Boston coach Joe Mazzulla said his team lost in every way analytically, whether it was the turnovers, offensive rebounding and elsewhere.

NBA Round up - Nets rally to stun Celtics, Jokic triple-double fuels ... (beIN SPORTS MENA Breaking News)

The Brooklyn Nets stunned the Boston Celtics 115-105 on Friday, rallying from a 28-point deficit to beat the Eastern Conference contenders on their home ...

"He loves to pass and make the right reads and get us going. Jaylen Brown led the Celtics with 35 points. In Chicago, Devin Booker drilled six three-pointers on the way to 35 points to lead the Phoenix Suns to a 125-104 victory over the Bulls. In Denver, two-time reigning Most Valuable Player Nikola Jokic scored 18 points with 18 rebounds and 10 assists, his 25th triple-double of the season pushing the Nuggets to a 113-97 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies in a battle of the top two teams in the West. "It all started with our defense." The Nets had whittled the deficit to nine points at halftime and took the lead for the first time -- and for good -- with 6:11 left in the third quarter.

Bridges finished with 38 points -- 32 of which came after the first quarter -- on 13-for-22 shooting, including 4-for-6 from 3-point range, to go along with 10 rebounds, 4 assists and a steal. But even as the Celtics took that 37-15 lead after the first quarter, coach Joe Mazzulla was concerned with how the game was going -- in particular that Brooklyn was getting up more 3s than Boston early on. I feel like I can make [shots]." "You can't get comfortable. In the NBA, leads aren't safe. "I was actually worried because we were scoring, but it wasn't because we were making shots," Mazzulla said. "It really does," Johnson said when asked if early leads -- because of the number of 3s taken in Friday's game -- may feel smaller than they once did. "Lost our composure a little bit as a group. But there was a perception at the time that the club brought forward the announcement after that loss to ease fan concern. United had, of course, lost their first two games of the season. Furthermore, the 9-0 aggregate loss was the second worst in their entire league history, with only an 11-0 deficit to Sunderland in 1892-93 – yes, the 1890s, not a typo of the 1990s – being a greater margin. United haven't beaten the Reds at Anfield in the Premier League in over seven years, with their last victory there being a 1-0 win in January 2016. Having already lost 5-0 at home to Liverpool in the 2021-22 season, there was almost a feeling things couldn't get worse for United at Anfield last April. The Premier League is the one, however, and if they are to pull off a remarkable turnaround to win it for the first time in 10 years, slip-ups from this point are unthinkable.

6 takeaways as Celtics blow 28-point lead in loss to Nets (Boston.com)

By the time I got traded, I was just in this great rhythm, and I was confident. He believes the 3-point rate is “the most important stat in the game of basketball, because of the shot selection, and because of the ability to go on runs.” To Mazzulla’s point, the difference in the second half — when the Celtics’ lead dwindled and turned into a deficit — was 23-12. [twice](https://www.statmuse.com/nba/ask/how-many-times-has-mikal-bridges-scored-30-points-in-his-career) in his career prior to Friday’s game, but since joining the Nets, he has scored 45, 31, and now 38. The Nets dealt the entire structure of their team at the trade deadline, and they have lost seven of their last 10 games. “And so, to me, I’m not really that surprised or worked up about it because a 24-point lead in the first half, in today’s NBA with the way offenses are, means almost nothing.” “We had 19 turnovers — any time you got that many, that’s a reflection of being a little careless with the ball,” Brown said. The reporter offered “anger” and “disbelief” as possibilities. It was a good statement win — a signal that the Celtics recognized how ridiculous it was that they gave up 150 points to a lottery team that didn’t even have its top scorer available. In the locker room after the game, a reporter asked Tatum what the Celtics were feeling. Presumably, the Bucks won’t continue to win every game the rest of the way. The Celtics woke up, but too much momentum had already switched sides, and the Nets pulled away in the second half — leading by as many as 16 in the fourth quarter.

Celtics Vs. Nets Takeaways: C's Start Strong, Finish Flat in Brutal Loss (NECN)

The Brooklyn Nets spoiled Jayson Tatum's 25th birthday on Friday night by handing the Boston Celtics their worst loss of the season. The C's started the game on ...

That sloppiness gave the Nets the momentum they needed to chip away at the deficit. They shot 15-for-23 from the floor in the frame. It finished off a double-digit victory while becoming the first team this season to rally back from a 28-point deficit. [ruled Williams out with left hamstring tightness](https://www.nbcsports.com/boston/celtics/celtics-robert-williams-exits-fridays-game-vs-nets-injury?b&chrcontext=NECN) shortly afterward. Brooklyn pulled ahead in the third quarter and piled it on in the fourth to earn a 115-105 win at TD Garden. It was reminiscent of the last time these two teams met when the Celtics outscored the Nets 46-16 in the first quarter. It's currently unclear how much time the big man will miss, if any, but it's the last thing C's fans want to see in the final stretch of the regular season. It affected the Celtics on the defensive end as they were unable to get stops once Brooklyn gained confidence in the second quarter. With the defeat, the Celtics' win streak against the Nets (regular season and playoffs) comes to an end at 10 games. But above all else, it was the turnovers that cost them. There were many reasons for the Celtics' awful loss. For the first 12 minutes, it looked like the Celtics were headed toward one of their easiest wins in recent memory.

Prior to Friday's game, Bridges had only scored 30 points twice in his career, but since joining the Nets, he has already scored 45, 31, and 38. The Celtics must (and can) win some games to maintain themselves in the running for the top seed, which would avert Milwaukee hosting a potential Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals. The Celtics treated the Nets like the Washington Generals and it ... (The Boston Globe)

In the second half, the Celtics lost all their edge, all their swag, and were relegated to looking like a bunch of chumps.

They had just eked out a win over the Cavaliers, and the Knicks and Cavs were ahead on a back-to-back. They looked defeated and the only way they could revive themselves was with the Celtics’ help, and the Celtics were eager to oblige. A veteran club should not let this happen, and the Celtics are filled with veterans. It was Game 64, and the Celtics are still learning lessons? The Celtics assumed the Nets would lay down because they wanted an easy night. They have the propensity to cheat the game when they have big leads, treating their opponents like the Washington Generals when they feel the game is over. But this had little to do with actual basketball or the number of 3-point shots or Brooklyn’s defensive adjustments. It happens in the NBA. The Celtics lost, 115-105, dropped further behind the Bucks for first place in the Eastern Conference, and tried giving the ol’ “no lead is ever safe in the NBA” explanation. The Celtics led by 28 with seven minutes left in the second quarter. Except, the Nets aren’t the Washington Generals. The only thing missing Friday was the bucket of water and Tatum standing at the free throw line calling signals like Geese Ausbie.
