NHL trade deadline 2023: Why the Flyers failed to trade James van ... (Sporting News)

Flyers forward James van Riemsdyk was a prime candidate to be moved at the 2023 trade deadline. Yet, the veteran winger remains on Philadelphia's roster.

It's hard not to see this deadline as a failure for the Flyers. "We certainly made everyone aware that he was available. No." "No. "I'm trying to be very clear here. NHL trade deadline 2023 winners, losers: East loads up with ... (USA TODAY)

While the leadup to Friday's NHL trade deadline was exciting, the day itself was not as eventful. Here are the highlights from trade season.

All the major moves happened in the East. [fastest team to 100 points](https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nhl/bruins/2023/03/02/bruins-set-nhl-record-100-points-61-games/11387479002/) in NHL history, and even so, they didn't sit still. The Penguins kept the Big Three of Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang together in the offseason, but production from their bottom-six forwards has been an issue all season. Even as the Red Wings look at their seventh season in a row without a playoff berth, Yzerman is in no rush for quick, short-lived fixes. They also have the contracts of Oliver Ekman-Larrson, Bryan Little, Andrew Ladd and Josh Brown on their books; none of them play for the Coyotes. The Red Wings have five picks in the first two rounds of the 2023 draft, but losing key roster pieces will hurt their push for a wild-card spot. They avoided playoff distractions by [signing David Pastrnak](https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nhl/2023/01/30/nhl-trade-deadline-2023-tracker-analysis-deals-rumors/11136672002/) to an eight-year, $90 million contract. General manager Kyle Dubas is under pressure to win a Stanley Cup – or even a playoff round – in the final year of his contract. They're a deeper team, but of course, they'll have to face the three-time defending Stanley Cup finalist Lightning in the first round. But they do seem to be among the teams most receptive to adding draft picks and holding contracts for players not on their roster, so there's that! The Rangers needed a top-six right winger, a defenseman and a depth forward. Then Kane essentially forced his way to New York and the Rangers finalized that deal Tuesday.

Kraken remain quiet as NHL trade deadline passes (The Seattle Times)

The Kraken apparently are banking on their existing group during the final months of the regular season and a potential playoff run.

Seattle held on to its 10 picks in the 2023 draft. “This group has worked really hard to put themselves in this position and the focus is [on] continuing to do that together.” Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli reported Friday that the Kraken were “keeping an eye on John Klingberg,” an Anaheim Ducks defenseman and former teammate of Seattle blueliner Jamie Oleksiak. Seattle was widely reported to be seeking the services of James van Riemsdyk, whose second stint with the Philadelphia Flyers appeared to have ended Friday. … This team, to the best of my knowledge and my information, likes each other. The Kraken front office bolstered the depth on defense with a deal for the San Jose Sharks’ Jaycob Megna on Feb.

Most improved team after 2023 NHL Trade Deadline debated (NHL.com)

The NHL landscape has been radically altered in the past five weeks thanks to a flurry of trades, many involving big names like forwards Patrick Kane, ...

We all know the Maple Leafs have been eliminated in the first round of the playoffs six seasons in a row and haven't won a postseason series since 2004, and we won't know until the playoffs start if what they did will be enough for them to advance in a likely first-round matchup against the Lightning. The Predators also traded forward Nino Niederreiter to the Winnipeg Jets for a second-round pick in the 2024 draft and forward Mikael Granlund to the Pittsburgh Penguins for a second-round pick in the 2023 draft. Sure, the Rangers and Devils made the big splashes in the Eastern Conference with the acquisitions of Kane and Meier, but the Maple Leafs added the grit, as well as postseason experience and success, they have been lacking. The worst kept secret in the weeks leading up to the deadline was the possibility of the Devils working on a deal to get the skilled power forward they coveted in Meier from the San Jose Sharks. This checks all the boxes for me, for now and for later. 14 pick in the 2017 NHL Draft), a conditional first-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft, a second-round pick in the 2024 NHL Draft and third- fourth-, and fifth-round picks in the 2023 NHL Draft. That's what the Rangers have in the newly acquired dynamic duo of Tarasenko (from the St. This is a huge addition for the already impressive core of the Senators, who would benefit greatly from getting playoff experience this season without needing to make a deal for a rental. The cry regarding the Oilers for a few seasons was to get stronger on defense, and they did that by acquiring Mattias Ekholm from the Nashville Predators on Tuesday. Oh, and they have the goalie, Linus Ullmark, who is the favorite to win the Vezina Trophy as the best in the NHL. The Bruins, the best team in the NHL all season and the fastest in League history to reach 100 points (101 in 61 games), got significantly better before the deadline with the acquisitions of defenseman Dmitry Orlov and Garnet Hathaway from the Washington Capitals on Feb. They ranked second defensively (2.58 goals against per game), and they were ninth offensively (3.34 goals per game) even though they didn't have an individual in the top 50 in scoring.

Capitals vow to stay competitive despite being NHL Trade Deadline ... (NHL.com)

Following the Washington Capitals' first NHL Trade Deadline as sellers since 2007, their hope remains that this season is a one-year setback in their bid to ...

"I still think we want to be competitive this year. "So, I think we had to straddle a line of what's best for the future, what's best for our team in the future and try and still add players and stay competitive." "We want to be competitive next year," MacLellan said. When Ovechkin, who is second in NHL history with 813 goals, signed a five-year, $47.5 million contract to stay with Washington in 2021, part of the reason was so he could chase Wayne Gretzky's NHL record of 894 goals. "You still need some players and draft picks to trade to get these guys," MacLellan said. It meant parting with two more key members of the 2018 Stanley Cup championship team in Orlov and Eller, who scored the Cup-winning goal. "There's only room to grow for him," MacLellan said of Sandin. The trades Washington completed in the days leading up to the deadline were aimed at getting younger and acquiring draft picks to potentially be turned into more younger players in the offseason. Sandin, a left-shot defenseman who turns 23 on March 7 and is signed for two more seasons after this one, was the key player addition. After reshaping their roster, Caps are quiet at the NHL trade deadline (The Washington Post)

Washington made just one internal transaction Friday, re-signing forward Nicolas Aube-Kubel to a one-year, $1.2 million deal.

And then moving forward in the offseason and going into the draft, we have a lot more flexibility to trade for players.” But MacLellan viewed the moves as necessary, and it was important for him to be transparent with Ovechkin, whom owner Ted Leonsis reportedly promised last year that the Capitals wouldn’t rebuild while the captain was still playing. “But we’ve had a lot of change in personnel the entire year. MacLellan said the team has interest in bringing both players back next season, and he’s also eying an extension for defenseman Martin Fehervary, 23, who could form a strong pairing with Sandin for years to come. We’re always adding, looking for ways to improve your team,” MacLellan said. The Capitals now own 22 picks in the next three NHL drafts, including five selections in what is expected to be a deep draft this June. I don’t know if we were showing the consistency that we needed to show to become a team that we’re going to go for it,” MacLellan said of the Capitals, who have lost seven of nine, a slump that has made them a long shot to make the postseason. He sent forward Marcus Johansson to the Minnesota Wild for a 2024 third-round pick and traded “We want to be competitive next year. The speedy forward has 14 goals and 22 points in 60 games this season. They are reportedly in the market for a defenseman. Pittsburgh coach Mike Sullivan has familiarity with Bonino and what he can do, even though he hasn't played for the Penguins in nearly six seasons. Regardless, the Jets are getting a versatile forward who had 15 points (six goals, nine assists) in 57 games for the Lightning this season. He never played a game for the Sharks, who are getting a fourth-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft in return for Namestnikov. It was 81.5 percent in the first 44 games of the season. ET when the Ducks aren't going to the Stanley Cup Playoffs and he's a pending unrestricted free agent? This is a smart bit of business for the Wild. The versatile forward has 21 points (seven goals, 14 assists) in 52 games this season. It apparently was not, because he found a depth forward in the bargain bin. Brothers were traded for each other, with forward Brett Ritchie going from the Calgary Flames to the Arizona Coyotes in a trade that sent forward Nick Ritchie to Calgary. He's signed for two more seasons ($1 million cap charge) and could be an extra forward for the Devils or a bottom-six regular.

Hurricanes stand pat Friday as other NHL playoff contenders in ... (Raleigh News & Observer)

Carolina Hurricanes chose not to make additions after acquiring Jesse Puljujarvi, Shayne Gostisbehere earlier in pro hockey trading window.

“We really needed to address that and with ‘Ghost’ I think we did,” Waddell said. “But we’ve got to get him in there.” We’re very comfortable with ‘KK’ and he gives us a lot of jam up there, too, which you need on your top two lines.” “You go in with what you think is your strategy for your needs and stick to it. The Canes were counting on Gostisbehere, obtained Wednesday from the Coyotes, to give a new look to the power play, which has been spotty this season. The Canes picked up Puljujarvi on Tuesday in a deal with Edmonton, bringing in a player who was the fourth overall pick of the 2016 NHL draft. One thing is this group is very close, and I know the concern was we were maybe going to have to lose someone off our roster to make a significant move.” Worry about what you can do to put yourself in the best position to keep us moving forward.” “He’s a big guy and we wanted to get a little bigger,” Waddell said. It’s always disappointing when you go after a player, but it’s also reality you’re not going to get everybody you want. “You can only put your best foot forward, which we did, and once you do that you can’t do anything more. But the “group” is set.

Following a white-hot month of December, the Washington Capitals entered the new year by erasing the ground they made up in the playoff race.

Realistically, the Caps need to add two forwards (one for depth) and a right handed defenseman to the roster for next season. The only pure goalscorer on the roster is Ovechkin, and the Caps need more scoring depth to be successful. There’s another forward slot available in the lineup that the Caps could use on a middle six forward. The Caps get a defenseman that’ll likely be in their top four for at least the rest of the Ovechkin Era. The Capitals need to get younger NHL-caliber talent on the roster to support the aging veteran group of players. The Capitals need to re-sign Alexander Alexeyev and Martin Fehervary, who are restricted free agents, to secure a young left side of the defensive corps along with You might wonder if the Caps could have received a bit better of a return on Hathaway and Orlov if he decided not to package them together. On top of that, there are some key types of players the Caps should be targeting this off-season. The first move in selling-off players on expiring contracts was a rather big one: the Caps traded long-time defenseman Dmitry Orlov and beloved fourth liner Garnet Hathaway to the league leading Boston Bruins. But, this is exactly the kind of move that MacLellan should have made; he acquired a 22 year-old, proven NHL defenseman, that’s in need of a bigger role than he was currently getting in Toronto.
