Red Wings trade Bertuzzi to Bruins for first round pick (Detroit Hockey Now)

The Red Wings traded winger Tyler Bertuzzi to the Boston Bruins on Thursday, receiving a package that includes a 2024 first-round pick.

And it was red flags that convinced Yzerman signing Bertuzzi long-term wouldn’t pay dividends for Detroit in the long run. [broke both of his hands](https://detroithockeynow.com/2023/01/31/tyler-bertuzzi-contract-talks-nhl-trade-value-rumors/) – one while blocking the shot, the other when being hit with a shot while at the net front. The Red Wings would never elaborate on the cause of this injury. Bertuzzi missed the majority of the 2020-21 season after undergoing back surgery. There’s no questioning that Bertuzzi was bringing an element to the Red Wings that was unique to their roster. In essence, that’s what the Red Wings are doing. His brand of hockey leads to punishment and injury. [Tyler Bertuzzi](https://puckpedia.com/player/tyler-bertuzzi) in his new colors. The harsh reality was that this team is nowhere near ready to compete for postseason placings. These deals are also a clear message that Detroit’s rebuild is much further from being a finished product then the fanbase was hoping barely a week ago.

The priority for Detroit was always to try to get Bertuzzi, a pending unrestricted free agent, signed to a contract extension. But he is a pending unrestricted free agent and the Red Wings moved now to make sure they got something for one of their best players. Coming out of the All-Star break, Bertuzzi finally scored his second goal of an injury-filled season — and then his ice time increased dramatically, an indication the Red Wings could be trying to showcase him. Suffice to say Detroit’s management has pulled the chute on the team’s recent playoff push. The Bruins will have to execute a transaction today to achieve cap compliance. The question is, how far does this selling go? The severity of Hall’s lower-body injury, however, is unknown. Here’s what you need to know:

The Bruins added to their forward depth on Thursday, trading for scrappy Red Wings forward Tyler Bertuzzi in exchange for draft picks.

If either Hall or Foligno are ruled out for the season, Bertuzzi stands as a logical replacement on the wing. Adding a former 30-goal scorer like Bertuzzi to Boston’s bottom-six group adds significant scoring depth to an already-loaded roster. The 6-foot-1 winger has four goals and 14 points over 29 games in an injury-plagued season thus far.

Here's everything at stake as Detroit Red Wings count down to NHL ... (Detroit Free Press)

It'd be devastating for Detroit Red Wings to risk losing Tyler Bertuzzi for nothing in free agency, rather than deal him by 2023 NHL trade deadline.

Louis Blues' pick from last year's trade-deadline deal, and the Canucks. The Canucks also got a 2023 fourth-round pick. Bertuzzi, 28, is a goal scorer and a pest, but his significant injury history over the past two years (back surgery in 2021, surgery on both hands this season) has limited his availability and clouded contract talks. Hronek, 25, had nine goals and 38 points in 60 games this season. There's a year left on Vrana's contract with a $5.25 million salary cap hit, but the Wings have the space to retain 50% of that if it helps facilitate a trade. [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]). Other players on expiring deals are forwards Pius Suter and Oskar Sundqvist, defenseman Robert Hägg, and goaltenders Magnus Hellberg, and, in the minors, Alex Nedeljkovic. The Wings came into the season having earmarked Bertuzzi and Vrana for 30 goals apiece, but both were gone in the first week. The Wings (28-24-8) were off Wednesday, a brief respite between finishing playing three games in four days and going right back into another challenge. Yzerman's task is to put a competitive product on the ice, while prioritizing the future. Trading his rights is a possibility, but that wouldn't yield as good a return as moving him at the deadline, when buyers pay premium prices to stock up for the playoffs. But one week later, they're on a three-game skid headed into Thursday's contest against the Seattle Kraken.

But the two years remaining on his contract at a $1.825 million average annual value, coupled with his lack of production (two goals, four points in 19 games) would limit the return. Bertuzzi, 28, once was a core player on a rebuilding team, with a coveted blend of skill and grit. Bertuzzi’s trade value diminished during an injury-plagued season in which he’s missed a total of 29 games on separate occasions with broken left and right hands.

Boston is the betting favorite to win the conference and the Cup. He’s due for a raise, and the Red Wings weren’t willing to give it to him. The Bruins sent a protected 2024 first-round pick and a 2025 fourth-round pick to Steve Yzerman in the deal. The Red Wings will retain half of the remaining hit, and the Bruins can also find short-term cap relief by potentially adding Hall or Foligno to long-term injured reserve. Bertuzzi is in the final season of his contract and carries a significant $4.75 million cap hit. Boston Bruins Trade For Red Wings Forward Tyler Bertuzzi (Boston Hockey Now)

The Boston Bruins have reportedly landed Detroit Red Wings winger Tyler Bertuzzi in a trade ahead of Friday night's deadline.

[Boston Bruins4 hours ago ](https://bostonhockeynow.com/2023/03/02/boston-bruins-game-61-boston-bruins-vs-buffalo-sabres-betting-lines-preview/) Veteran players like Lucic and Nick Bjugstad were available in trade and likely on Boston’s radar as a forward depth move before Bertuzzi became the desired target. The Hall lower body injury, in particular, had to have been a factor in Boston’s efforts to land Bertuzzi and hedge their bests with more quality depth at the wing position. [Tyler Bertuzzi](https://puckpedia.com/player/tyler-bertuzzi) has been informed that he’s been traded to the Boston Bruins. The Boston Bruins gave up a 2024 first round pick (top-10 protected) and a 2025 fourth round pick with Detroit retaining 50 percent of Bertuzzi’s salary. The first round pick is a pretty high price to be paid for a pure rental in Bertuzzi that’s having a very down season with the Red Wings.

For Detroit, targeting next year’s first was a savvy move given this being a Last Dance for the Bruins. And good for the Bruins for recognizing that and pushing all their chips into the table. This is the best team I’ve ever seen and it just got even better. Bertuzzi is in a scoring rut this year with just four goals and 14 points in 29 games, but he’s one year removed from scoring 30 goals and 62 points in 68 games. He’s projected to add roughly 1.7 wins to the Bruins — as if they needed it.

Grading the Red Wings-Bruins Tyler Bertuzzi trade (ClutchPoints)

The Detroit Red Wings traded star forward Tyler Bertuzzi to the Boston Bruins ahead of Friday's NHL trade deadline.

Boston gets quality depth on the wings and vastly improves what is potentially the greatest regular-season team of all time. Detroit continues to stack assets and build for the future. So the Bruins didn’t need to add a Tyler Bertuzzi to their lineup. Bertuzzi is an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season, and he wasn’t returning to Detroit. Detroit wasn’t bringing Bertuzzi back next season, so they make a move to acquire premium draft capital. However, they are falling behind, and their Filip Hronek trade on Wednesday signaled the first domino to fall in a sell-off. There is no reason to hold on to Betuzzi if he is going to leave for nothing in a few months. So while they don’t need Bertuzzi, the Bruins do well to acquire such a quality insurance plan. He is also a menace to play against. Bertuzzi is a perfect fit for this team. If the pick lands within the top 10 of the 2024 NHL Entry Draft, it slides to an unprotected 2025 first-round pick. In exchange, the Red Wings acquire a conditional 2024 first-round pick and a 2025 fourth-round pick.

With a team that remarkable, and an expiration date coming up, all you can ask of a GM is that he respects the gift and acts accordingly. His style of play will be great in the playoffs and fits in very well with how the Bruins want to play. What I like most about the move, I think, is that it’s both reactionary and utterly correct. “The Bruins are the best team in the NHL and should rightfully be doing all they can to maximize their chances at a Stanley Cup. How the Bruins make the money work will be interesting. The already unstoppable Bruins decided their perfect roster wasn’t perfect enough. He’s projected to add roughly 1.7 wins to the Bruins — as if they needed it”. Bertuzzi has a reputation as a grinder, but he’s not a hitter. He’s a very skilled, and highly competitive wing who is a pain in the ass to play against. He’s not a perfect player. He has been limited to 29 games and has four goals and 10 assists.
