There will be no winners in Sixers vs. Nets trade if James Harden ... (The Philadelphia Inquirer)

MIAMI – Who will ultimately win the James Harden and Ben Simmons trade? There's a belief around the NBA that Harden will opt out of his $35.6 million player ...

Brooklyn has the assets needed to acquire another perennial All-Star in a future trade. So instead of having a basketball dynasty, the Nets are left with the struggling and untradeable Simmons on a middle-of-the-pack team. Brooklyn, however, was able to acquire Spencer Dinwiddle, Dorian Finney-Smith, a 2029 first-round pick, 2027 and 2029 second-rounders, and trade exceptions from Dallas in exchange for the package that included Irving. His seeking a change of scenery could all come after he opted out of a $47.4 million player option last summer to re-sign with the Sixers. The team also traded Durant to the Phoenix Suns. He played a little more than eight seasons in Houston before forcing a trade to the Brooklyn Nets on Jan. Right now, the first-place Milwaukee Bucks and second-place Boston Celtics appear to be a two-team race to come out of the East. However, one has to wonder if Harden is the right fit with the Rockets’ current young core. There’s a belief around the NBA that Harden will opt out of his $35.6 million player option with the 76ers and head back to the Houston Rockets in free agency. Harden is playing well for a squad that improved to 40-21 after Wednesday’s 119-96 victory over the Miami Heat at Miami-Dade Arena. In last season’s big trade deal, the Sixers packaged two first-round picks along with Simmons, Seth Curry and Andre Drummond to the Brooklyn Nets in exchange for Harden and Paul Millsap on Feb. One of the first-round picks was deferred to this summer’s NBA draft.

Sixers at Mavs: Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving total 82 points, Sixers ... (NBC Sports)

The Sixers couldn't stop the Luka Doncic-Kyrie Irving duo and dropped a high-scoring affair Thursday night in Dallas, falling to a 133-126 loss.

Maxey had 10 of those points and unsettled the Mavs with his energy and shotmaking as the leader of a lineup with four bench players. The Mavs had lost five of their previous six games, including a home defeat to the Lakers on Sunday in which they blew a 27-point lead. Bullock sunk two threes early in the third quarter and the Mavs’ lead swelled to 20 points when Irving split Harden and Embiid on the perimeter before making a tough, hanging hoop against Maxey at the rim. The eight-time All-Star got a wide-open three when Maxey had to tag the rolling Dwight Powell and Doncic kicked the ball out to the corner. The Sixers made a massive comeback push to begin the fourth quarter, posting the first 15 points of the period. Sixers head coach Doc Rivers reinserted Georges Niang into his rotation and the 29-year-old drew the second foul on Doncic by stepping in to take a charge. While this was clearly a subpar defensive showing by the Sixers, much of that is simply two great guards on their A-games facing a team on the second night of a back-to-back. Maxey scored on a nice leaner off the backboard, Tobias Harris looked sharp, and the Sixers’ offense flowed. Maxey brought the ball up on the game’s first play and Harden attacked downhill off of “Chicago action,” feeding Embiid for a pick-and-roll layup. Given Melton has ample experience coming off the bench and is a [versatile, instinctive, naturally adaptable player](https://www.nbcsports.com/philadelphia/sixers/deanthony-melton-sixers-crespi-high-school-doc-rivers-2022-23-sixers), there didn’t appear to be much risk in again having Maxey start. Despite making 57.7 percent of their field goals and 44.4 percent of their three-pointers, the Sixers dropped to 40-22 this season. [As we'd touched on Wednesday](https://www.nbcsports.com/philadelphia/sixers/sixers-at-heat-tyrese-maxey-paul-reed-joel-embiid-injury-doc-rivers), the argument for restoring Maxey to the starting lineup was quite strong.

Sixers come out on losing end of 133-126 shootout with Dallas ... (The Philadelphia Inquirer)

The Sixers inserted Tyrese Maxey back into the starting lineup and while he scored points, they also paid the price defensively.

Maxey added 29 points with 17 coming in the fourth quarter. We couldn’t get stops the whole night. Unfortunately for the Sixers, this outing was reminiscent of their Jan. So I didn’t think we did a good job when we were rotating in the entire night. They became the first Dallas teammates to both score at least 40 points in the same game. They’re five games ahead of the third-place Sixers. “But that was tough with one wizards with the basketball in Luka. I thought we were just late the entire night.” Those are some of the best guys with the basketball in the whole league. You got to give them a lot of credit, too, because they made tough shots.” But the familiar problems that arise when Maxey and Harden start together were also present against a Dallas Mavericks team that offers a very tough defensive assignment. Meanwhile, early on James Harden reminded everyone of his time as a prolific scorer before settling into the role of distributor.

Sixers explain what went wrong with Luka Doncic, Kyrie Irving in loss (Sixers Wire)

DALLAS–The Philadelphia 76ers were looking to build off a very solid win over the Miami Heat in South Florida when they paid a visit to the Dallas Mavericks ...

One of the issues that made the star duo so dangerous was the fact that they went one-on-one throughout the night. Those are some of the best guys with the basketball in the whole league and they just picked us apart tonight and just being able to raise up and score. “It was tough with one wizard with the basketball in Luka and now they got two of them out there so it was a tough matchup.

In the Sixers first matchup of the season against the Mavs, Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving were too much for them to handle.

Doncic, Irving sets record as Mavs upend Sixers, 133-126 (Mavs.com)

they were treated to something that's never happened before in the 43-year history of the Dallas Mavericks. Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving put on one of those ...

“Like I said the last time I was sitting up here (at the postgame press conference podium), I just had to join the party and just make sure my teammates were going to follow along,” Irving said. The Mavs stretched that lead to 131-115 with 3:09 remaining after a couple of free throws from Doncic and a triple from Irving. In the first half, both Doncic and Irving let the Sixers know what it was going to come down to and how serious they were about pulling the Mavs out of the doldrums. The Mavs are now 2-4 when Doncic – he also collected 12 assists — and Irving are in the lineup. If you watched them in the last Olympics, the first four games everyone was trying not to shoot, and then they kind of fell into place and figured it out. “I think just (Doncic and Irving) understand they’re leaders of the team,” Kidd said. “I just know when I’m out there I don’t want to lose the lead in a quick three-possession spurt, or they go on a 15-0 run or a 16-0 run. “I just think I was more ready and prepared for when he was going to pass me the ball. Doncic and Irving became the first pair of Mavs players to score at least 40 points in the same game. Doncic poured in 42 points and Irving added 40 as the Mavs built a 25-point lead in the third quarter and held on to upend the Philadelphia 76ers, 133-126. At the time, they knew pairing Irving with Doncic would lead to games where opponents would be bouncing off the balls trying to keep up with what has become the most feared backcourt in the NBA. This was the type of epic performance the Mavs anticipated when they acquired Irving in a trade with the Brooklyn Nets on Feb.
