MADISON, Wisconsin − Matt Painter already knew Thursday's game had no bearing on his team's place in the Big Ten standings. The Purdue coach, nosey as he ...
"I think you all saw it in the IU game, just how bad he wanted to win," freshman guard Fletcher Loyer said. He wanted the basketball at the end to shoot those free throws. "He lives for those moments. He wanted the ball. "His energy in the last game really from a staff standpoint, we just thought we needed that," Painter said. That’s what you work for," Newman said.
There's a saying in sports “every win is beautiful”. You'll see that expression come up after your team wins a game that you'd like to forget for one reason ...
In a season when Purdue was picked to finish in the middle of the pack it’s incredible what this team has accomplished. There was an outside chance that Purdue could clinch before that but it would have to be a Trips to Northwestern and Maryland resulted in some, ahem, rough and tumble basketball that saw Purdue lose back to back games for the first time all season. There’s still one conference game left in the season but at worst Purdue will walk away with a two game lead over the second place team, whoever that winds up being. Purdue lost both games and our Boilermakers stood and watched as the fans stormed the court for the second and third times this season. Despite a hard fought comeback in the second half Purdue never was able to take the lead and fell to the Hoosiers. Unfortunately for Purdue fans, it was more of the same against the Hoosiers this season. All was not lost though as Purdue returned home to the friendly confines of Mackey Arena and took down an Iowa team who tried their best to press Purdue into oblivion. Playing at Assembly is never an easy place to play and IU came out and punched Purdue in the mouth. Purdue was ranked #1 at the time for the second straight season. It took overtime to get by the Cornhuskers and move Purdue to 2-0 in conference play. Purdue now has 25 Big Ten championships with 13 of them being outright and 12 of them being shared.
Purdue is the Big Ten men's basketball regular-season champion after surviving at Wisconsin, 63-61, Thursday. The No. 5 Boilermakers (25-5, 14-5) got back ...
[Ethan Morton](//247sports.com/Player/Ethan-Morton-46047704) free throw with four seconds left gave Purdue the two point edge, and Wisconsin — with a chance to tie if not win the game — was unable to make anything out of the remaining time. 5 Boilermakers (25-5, 14-5) got back in the win column against their Big Ten West rival after losing the past two meetings — Purdue fell at home to the Badgers (16-13, 8-11) earlier in the season and dropped last year's contest at Kohl Center — as Matt Painter's group checked off the first of the team's major goals this season by winning the regular-season league title. Purdue held a one point lead with as few as four seconds left in a game in which all the scoring within the final two minutes came exclusively via free throws.
The Boilermakers 18-point comeback win is the second largest in Big Ten Tournament history.
The only thing that would have made the play better was for it to happen with less time remaining on the clock. “I'm really grateful to Coach Mo and the staff for bringing me along this last year. It was a two-possession game, 54-50, with 2:30 to go when the Badgers showed some of the mettle that helped them win four of their final five regular season game. Points became hard to come by and the turnovers increased significantly. The team raised its overall win total by three and its number of Big Ten wins from five to six. Maty Wilke’s three-pointer with 10.8 seconds left gave the Badgers women’s basketball team a one-point lead over Purdue in a second-round game at the Big Ten Tournament.
The No. 5 Purdue Boilermakers visit the Wisconsin Badgers. Purdue wants to win the Big Ten by itself, and Wisconsin seeks an NCAA tournament berth.
Out of the timeout, Wisconsin misses 3 3-pointers, and Purdue finally grabs the rebound. Purdue has doubled up the Badgers in rebounding (18-9) and is 12-of-14 on 2-point shots. Zach Edey is 1-of-6 on free throws. Sluggish start to the second half. Connor Essegian hits a 3 with 15:20 to go, and the Badgers lead 35-34. Wisconsin's Max Klesmit hits another 3 on the next play. Purdue's [Zach Edey](https://www.indystar.com/story/sports/college/purdue/2023/01/17/zach-edey-stats-nba-draft-profile-age-height-shoe-size-parents/69814176007/) remains a frontrunner for Big Ten Player of the Year. 6:34 left 2H: Wisconsin 53, Purdue 52 3:55 left 2H: Wisconsin 55, Purdue 54 The Boilermakers finish the regular season Sunday by hosting Illinois. 1:39 left 2H: Purdue 58, Wisconsin 57 They have the No.
No. 5 Purdue (24-5, 13-5 Big Ten) tips off against Wisconsin (16-12, 8-10) for its final road game of the regular season at the Kohl Center in Madison, Wis.
Purdue faces Wisconsin. Our college basketball odds series has our Purdue Wisconsin prediction, odds and pick.
The Badgers know they can play their way into the NCAA Tournament. The Badgers obviously aren’t a better team than Purdue, but they can certainly play one complete game on one night and punch their ticket to the Big Dance. Purdue’s recent losses might present a good set of reasons to pick against the Boilermakers, but this team is too good to keep blundering around. Those teams shouldn’t be threatening the Badgers in Madison if UW basketball is in a good position and is performing up to expected standards. Wisconsin is going to give it a full effort, but the matchup doesn’t favor the Badgers. If Wisconsin doesn’t win here, it will have to win at least one game at the Big Ten Tournament, very possibly two. The Kohl Center in Madison has not been the strong fortress it used to be for visiting Big Ten teams. Northwestern has won in the Kohl Center. Wisconsin split its recent pair of games versus Iowa and Michigan, which adds to the need to beat Purdue. You know coach Matt Painter will want to kick his team into shape and generate positive momentum heading into the Big Ten Tournament. It is not an easy assignment for the Badgers, but if they can ace this test, they will be in the NCAA Tournament. However, this is Purdue, a really good team which has played really poorly in recent weeks and will naturally want to bounce back and play a solid game to generate momentum before tournament time.
The Boilermakers look to win the regular season conference title outright in their final true road game of the season.
Get a few quick points here and there and you can afford to play a slower, more calculated offensive set piece with your typical high level of ball movement to find a shot just like it was drawn up in practice. That, combined with occasionally looking muddled in the guarding of a driving guard, might put a guy like Braden Smith or Fletcher Loyer in prime position for some much needed non-Edey points down low. If the Boilermakers are taking shots from deep with everybody spaced out around the three point line with just Edey and one defender near the rim, even if the shot rims out, Edey is going to clean it up and get the ball in the basket four times out of five. I would like to see more urgency taking the ball up the court and taking quick shots around the perimeter when it’s just Zach Edey and Steven Crowl down low. For a team with a true seven-footer, Wisconsin’s shot blocking is miserable. The team’s turnover percentage of 13.4 is fourth in the country and Purdue continues to fall in the rankings of turnover creation (a 333rd ranked 15.4). Their defensive turnover percentage is 18.4, which puts them at 168th in the country. Where the discussion of pace comes into play: Wisconsin does not turn the ball over. If Purdue fouls Wisconsin into the bonus or double bonus, Matt Painter can and will call to manipulate the clock expecting a few free throws to be missed. The Badgers rely too heavily on open shots, and with the Boilermakers’ typically tight, clean defense and ability to close out shots, the home team is going to need an uncharacteristically great shooting night to outlast their guests. Hypothetically, it would be easier for them to pump that number up at home, given that their free throw percentage drops by almost 4% in road conference games. They are a decent three point shooting team, ranked 102nd, hitting 35.5% of shots from deep.
Purdue women's basketball pulled off a historic comeback win in dramatic fashion against Wisconsin to advance to the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament ...
The Boilermakers are road favorites over the Badgers on Thursday night.
The Badgers rate 67th overall in KenPom with a 148th-rated offense in adjusted efficiency and 23rd defensively. The Badgers are fighting for their NCAA Tournament lives, so they’ll need to rely on their strengths on the defensive end of the floor. Purdue rates sixth overall in KenPom including 11th in adjusted offensive efficiency and 19th on the defensive end. Connor Essegian scored a game-high 24 points, but leading scorer Chucky Hepburn left the game and didn’t return. The game will start at 9:00 p.m. Zach Edey led the Boilermakers with 26 points on 8-of-17 field goals with 16 rebounds.
The Badgers are arguably in must-win territory tonight as they look to keep their NCAA Tournament hopes alive against Purdue. Wisconsin enters into Thursday ...
The Boilermakers used late free throws to hold off the Badgers.
The lone miss came from Ethan Morton with 4.4 seconds left on the front end of a double bonus. Painter continues to harp on the belief those are good shots for his team and if the Boilermakers go down because they can't hit shots, so be it. The freshman guard had nine points in the first half and finished with 13. "I guess it was a blessing in disguise to lose to IU at home and then come here and win outright against Wisconsin." Loyer, who was a combined 9 of 33 in the last four games, went 6-for-11 from the field. I had to get going, had to get good looks and just keep practicing it," Loyer said. Obviously with that, no matter if I made the first two or missed the first two, they are going to keep swinging it to me and I’ve got to be aggressive." Edey made two free throws with 1:45 to go, giving the Boilermakers a 58-57 lead. Max Klesmit missed a layup in traffic with 27 seconds to go that was rebounded by Braden Smith. Illinois' win over Michigan in double overtime assured no team could catch Purdue in the Big Ten standings. Sometimes all the noise, you’ve got to be able to either shut it out or use it as motivation." "The one thing that comes obviously you want to win a championship and obviously Wisconsin won it last year, it’s the journey and it’s the things that you go through, some of the tough things.
After losing four of its last six, Purdue went on the road and earned a narrow 63-61 win over Wisconsin on Thursday night at the Kohl Center.
