While our mission looks different in many ways than it did in 1865, the vision of service to our Commonwealth and the world remains the same. This is a private event; pre-registration is required: [https://www.ukalumni.net/s/event/a4k5G000000UUYbQAO/135-years-of-uk-women-luncheon-students](https://www.ukalumni.net/s/event/a4k5G000000UUYbQAO/135-years-of-uk-women-luncheon-students). The meeting will be in Spanglish (a mix of Spanish and English). The SIS Awards will recognize a graduate and undergraduate student and a staff and faculty member who have demonstrated commitment, sisterhood and service to other women on campus and beyond. This, like all events, are open to the community to learn and engage in intercultural exchange. The UK community is invited to stop by, take a selfie and pick up cupcakes, cookies, cuties and Womxn’s HERStory Month swag (buttons, stickers, etc.). We are confident in our decisions and only want the best for our ladies near and on campus.” The Womxn’s HERStory Month celebration will kick off at 11 a.m. (March 1, 2023) — March is Women's History Month — commemorating and encouraging the study, observance and celebration of the vital role of women in America. With programs like Ubuntu, Latinx Heritage Month, the MLK Day celebration and, most recently, Black History Month, UK is honoring the communities that have shaped the institution's story.

Women's History Month facts: When is Women's History Month? (Sky HISTORY)

celebrate women's roles in key historical events and how they've shaped our present and future.

Let’s explore some of the key facts about Women’s History Month and the work we still have to do: For some nations, International Women’s Day is celebrated as a joint holiday. Only four countries recognised the first event, but interest quickly spread, and now countries around the world recognise the importance of the annual event. 1910 marked the second International Conference of Working Women in Copenhagen. International Women’s Day has been observed since the early 20th century, as women began to recognise the inequality they experienced and mobilise due to this. Women continued to celebrate the occasion on the last Sunday of February until 1913.

This March, Tallahassee's Oasis Center for Women & Girls is honoring and recognizing six women and one girl for their trailblazing efforts.

By highlighting the accomplishments of women and understanding the past that has created inequities, we can envision a different future. We were not at the signing of the Declaration of Independence because white women weren’t allowed and black women were enslaved. Not because we didn't have the capability to manage or make money, but because women weren’t allowed to own property, estates were left to sons, and women were barred, and later discouraged from attending college. However, there are generations to go before the discriminatory practices of the past stop affecting the present-day reality of women. The value, or lack of value, placed on those contributions is why the history books are not equally filled with information about women who came before us. I wish the impact women have had on our country and in our community was woven through every story told, every documentary shown, and every history book.

The first Women's History Week was observed in 1978, when educators in Santa Rosa, California, publicly commended women's contributions and achievements with a local celebration to generate awareness. Finally, in 1987, Congress declared the entire month of March as Women's History Month. With March being Women's History Month — and March 8 specifically being International Women's Day — many organizations are likely planning to pay tribute to the women on their teams and recognize the many contributions that they have made. A consortium of women's groups and historians then successfully lobbied for national recognition of the observance, and in 1980, President Jimmy Carter issued a proclamation for March 8 to be the start of a National Women's History Week. And I am the Secretary of Health and Human Services for this incredible country. “I am the husband of an incredible woman and doctor. So, when I look across the conference room table and see the many women in leadership positions across the Department—or as I meet the next generation of women leaders at HHS—I know that we are truly fulfilling our mission. We will continue to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with women and girls across the country as we work to restore reproductive health care access for all. “Women are also contending with the loss of their constitutional right to abortion care.
