The Warriors are second-to-last in the NBA in fouls committed this season. Kerr admitted after Tuesday’s contest that he’ll likely continue to concoct specific, bespoke game plans for the remainder of the regular season. We have to close the deal. That’s a brutal stat that sums up the team’s campaign. “You got to figure out your opponent and maybe throw something different at them, and then have the poise to stay with it.” With the pace of the NBA today, you can come back from down 30… But on Tuesday, we saw a bespoke defensive game plan from coach Steve Kerr and his staff for the first time this season. So the Warriors made it their mission to make anyone but Lillard beat them. But you overreact and you get out of character… As I said, every game remaining on the schedule is a big game for the Warriors. The Portland point guard scored 71 points on Sunday. “You just gotta make somebody else make a shot instead of him.

Warriors unleash a box-and-one on Damian Lillard, beat the Blazers ... (Golden State of Mind)

They unleashed the "junk" defense and also forced Lillard to defend in space.

Outscoring the Blazers by 22 points in a quarter they have historically owned has been more the exception rather than the norm; prior to the game, they had been a Remember the possession above during the end of the second quarter that got Poole a layup? The Blazers were outscored by 21 points during all of Lillard’s minutes in the second half. Take note of DiVincenzo faceguarding Lillard in an effort to deny him possession of the ball, all while the rest of the Warriors aren’t matched up on anyone — in other words, a box-and-one. It seemed like every time the Warriors went to a box-and-one against Lillard, the Blazers would be at a loss as to how to attack it. A combination of struggles creating advantages on offense and an inability to contain Damian Lillard — fresh off of his incandescent 71-point performance — and his teammates plagued the Warriors.

Poole, Thompson rally Warriors to beat Trail Blazers 123-105 (NBC Sports)

Sharpshooters Klay Thompson and Jordan Poole stepped up to rally the Warriors from 23 down to get the win over the Trail Blazers.

[Donte DiVincenzo](https://www.nbcsportsedge.com/basketball/nba/player/30588/donte-divincenzo) said. [Jonathan Kuminga](https://www.nbcsportsedge.com/basketball/nba/player/61631/jonathan-kuminga) delivered a high-flying one-handed dunk down the middle late in the third certain to make the highlight reels, then another shortly after to aid the comeback. “We’ve been battling all season and without and Steph and Wiggs for so much of the season. [Damian Lillard](https://www.nbcsportsedge.com/basketball/nba/player/29806/damian-lillard), without fouling the Trail Blazers star after he made all 16 of his free throws last time against the defending champs. Lillard was whistled for three quick fouls after halftime and Portland unsuccessfully challenged his fourth personal. [Draymond Green](https://www.nbcsportsedge.com/basketball/nba/player/29835/draymond-green) returned from a two-game absence with a bruised right knee, then injured his left wrist at the 9:15 mark of the second in a collision with [Drew Eubanks](https://www.nbcsportsedge.com/basketball/nba/player/27759/drew-eubanks) and went to the locker room before returning about four minutes later. “We know all too well what Dame can do when he gets rolling,” coach Steve Kerr said. [Jordan Poole](https://www.nbcsportsedge.com/basketball/nba/player/51434/jordan-poole) had 29 points, six assists and five rebounds, [Klay Thompson](https://www.nbcsportsedge.com/basketball/nba/player/29691/klay-thompson) scored 23 points and the Warriors rallied past the red-hot Lillard and Portland 123-105 on Tuesday night.

Steve Kerr's coaching staff decided to deploy a playoff-like specified scheme to slow the blazing-hot Portland point guard.

[Anthony Lamb](https://theathletic.com/nba/player/anthony-lamb-B2uSjdPjkmH1V3fk/) and [Jordan Poole](https://theathletic.com/nba/player/jordan-poole-OKSId48WraP8pRNl/) populate the top of the box. The scheme produced a quieter-than-usual Lillard and a necessary win for the Warriors. You’re preparing for the playoffs, going series to series and switching coverage, going quarter to quarter and you can change your coverage and everyone figures it out.” The Warriors decided to commit heavier to the game plan to get the ball out of Lillard’s hands and made sure to sharpen up their execution of it. [Matisse Thybulle](https://theathletic.com/nba/player/matisse-thybulle-FecSqxC1FV1DRBU7/) hit a pair of 3s. [Nassir Little](https://theathletic.com/nba/player/nassir-little-Od7dn5q0wGPFlvRe/) and Reddish also connected from deep. Green sees [Jerami Grant](https://theathletic.com/nba/player/jerami-grant-QggzqMWqA3NR7yOG/) cutting to the middle and relays that to Lamb. Draymond Green and [Jonathan Kuminga](https://theathletic.com/nba/player/jonathan-kuminga-6xXExjD2A4eIrB46/) are at the bottom of it. They had better point-of-attack options, like a healthy [Gary Payton II](https://theathletic.com/nba/player/gary-payton-ii-nvluPOjR8pF1bTxB/), and more capable veterans, like [Otto Porter Jr.](https://theathletic.com/nba/player/otto-porter-jr-YZArJyJYbXqwrxSC/), to absorb and execute strategy. [Warriors](https://theathletic.com/nba/team/warriors/) were at their most fierce last season when their defense was at its most complex, bouncing from scheme to scheme dependent on opposing personnel. Lillard is unable to spring open and kind of wanders out of the action.

Thankfully for the Warriors and their three-game win streak, they're very willing to adjust. Meanwhile, the Warriors started exploiting Lillard and Portland's lack of size, going inside repeatedly and shooting 24-32 on two-pointers in the second half. Kerr and the Warriors have added it as a regular defensive option, breaking it out against Anthony Edwards at times in their win over Minnesota Sunday. In the second half, head coach Steve Kerr broke out a "junk" defense normally seen on the high school level: A box-and-one. After Jerami Grant hit a three-pointer to put Portland up 63-40, the Warriors outscored them 83-42 the rest of the way. Tuesday, the Warriors made a big comeback of their own, beating the Blazers after falling behind only 23 points.

Warriors come alive in third quarter to beat Portland (Paradise Post)

The Warriors outscored the Trail Blazers 39-17 in the third for their largest point differential in any quarter this season.

He recorded a quintessential Draymond stat line in his return to the floor after missing two games with a knee injury: 12 points, nine rebounds, eight assists, two steals and two blocked shots. Thompson drained a 3 with 1:46 left in the third to give the Warriors their first lead of the game. Though the Blazers’ lead swelled to 23 in the second quarter, Golden State closed out the half with an 8-2 run and carried that momentum out of the break. “Second half, we were more disciplined in what we wanted to do. But I think we weathered the storm, we stayed together, we were more disciplined in the second half on what we’re throwing at Damian, and ultimately when we’re together like that, you see the room that we make, and the crowd gets into it, once that happens, anything can happen.” The Warriors looked to be putting up another dud after an erratic first half, where they turned the ball over 11 times and committed too many fouls.

He scored 42 points in Santa Cruz’s most recent game and won G League Player of the Week. [Anthony Lamb](https://theathletic.com/nba/player/anthony-lamb-B2uSjdPjkmH1V3fk/) has played in 47. [Ty Jerome](https://theathletic.com/nba/player/ty-jerome-KpToHuCIKQKMUKrt/) has played in 40 but has been active for three others. But Quiñones spent the season in Santa Cruz and put up huge numbers. The cleaner choice for the Warriors would’ve been to choose Lamb or Jerome and convert one of the two into the open 15th roster spot, leaving a vacant two-way spot for Quiñones. He’s a younger prospect who the front office identified and targeted after he went undrafted. He is Kerr’s steadying backup point guard, careful with the ball and able to create a floater in a pinch. Once he is, Jerome is expected to sink out of the rotation. Curry’s return is on the horizon. The Athletic’s Shams Charania [reported it first](https://twitter.com/ShamsCharania/status/1631006316603887632?s=20). By adding Quiñones, Lamb is now cleared for three more games and Jerome has seven more. On Thursday, they are expected to sign Lester Quiñones off their Santa Cruz roster onto a 10-day contract, a move has been in the works for days and has some layers to it.

The deal helps them extend their decision window on two-way players Ty Jerome and Anthony Lamb, too.

They converted Juan Toscano-Anderson’s two-way contract and promptly signed him to a two-year deal in May 2021. He had an underwhelming camp and was dropped in favor of more experienced NBA players Lamb and Jerome for two-way deals. Two-way contracts do not count against the salary cap, while a converted contract filling a roster spot does. Quinones is tearing up the G League with the Santa Cruz Warriors this year.
