Anthony Davis' unwinnable fight to save the Lakers' season (SB Nation)

With LeBron James out with an injury, the Lakers need Anthony Davis to play at his peak if they want to save their season.

As time has progressed, it is supposed to be Davis’ Lakers team with LeBron as one of the league’s best right-hand men. So much of what the Lakers have been built to be is around the idea of what LeBron and Anthony Davis are together. But without LeBron - which Davis will be eventually, one way or another - AD is forced to be the bearer of all that Lakers championship-or-bust burden weight. And in fairness, to an extent that isn’t possible - and also part of the Lakers problem. And while the Grizzlies are indeed one of the league’s best teams, things do not get easier from here with LeBron James out. They simply need Anthony Davis to be other-worldly in order for them to get back in the playoff conversation in a parity-riddled Western Conference. Anthony Davis continued to be a force, finishing the game with 28 points (on 19 shots), 19 rebounds, and 5 blocks. and being a menace on the glass and around the rim. The Lakers committed 25 turnovers in the Grizzlies game - certainly not helpful when scoring attempts give way to Memphis possessions, especially in transition where the Grizzlies thrive. LeBron and AD have shared the floor in 28 of them. Their sub-.500 regular season reflected that reality - as well as the intermittent availability of both James and Davis as a duo. was 4-1 since their major [NBA Trade Deadline](http://www.sbnation.com/nba-trade-rumors) acquisitions, bringing D’Angelo Russell back in to the fold alongside Malik Beasley, Jarred Vanderbilt, and Mo Bamba to help bolster a roster that was fairly mundane around superstars LeBron James and Anthony Davis.

Waters, who recently signed a full-time contract with the Thunder after being on a two-way deal, finished the half with six points on a pair of 3-pointers to go along with a block and a steal. The Thunder coaching staff has been encouraging Williams to play more and more aggressively and that determination was on display against the Lakers as the rookie finished the game with 24 points, four rebounds, seven boards and two steals. Thanks to 29 assists on 44 made baskets the Thunder kept the scoreboard moving, but the Lakers knocked down 16 3s and limited its turnovers to just 13, chipping away at the lead and eventually taking a 13-point lead in the fourth quarter. Even as the Lakers attempted to throw a zone the Thunder’s way to diffuse the shooting, the Thunder utilized its rapid ball movement to continue to find clean looks. Despite racking up 60 points in the paint, 26 more than the Lakers, as well as 25 fast-break points compared to just seven for Los Angeles, the Thunder dropped this one on Wednesday 123-117. The Lakers marched to the free throw line all night long, with 39 total attempts including 18 in the fourth quarter alone.

Player grades: The Oklahoma City Thunder's losing streak extended to five games with a 123-117 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers.

“I do feel like I end up answering a lot of questions from you guys about free-throw discrepancies and how the game’s called. Troy Brown Jr.’s close out on Joe caused him to fall following his release. Joe’s final 3-pointer came with some controversy because the sharpshooter’s landing space was non-existent. So it kinda speaks to that,” Giddey said about Williams. Williams also collected seven assists and four rebounds. He finished with 19 points on 7-of-16 shooting and went 4-of-6 from the free-throw line. [March 2, 2023] Giddey attacked the paint and shot 9-of-13 in that area. How the second half of this six-game homestand plays out will reveal a lot. For the Thunder, they caught fire but eventually cooled off. The Lakers shot 16-of-35 (45.7%) from 3 — meanwhile, the Thunder went 11-of-40 (27.5%) from 3. Someone who did receive some timely calls was former Thunder guard Dennis Schroder, who led the way for the Lakers with 26 points on 8-of-18 shooting and 7-of-8 shooting from the free-throw line.

Los Angeles shot 37% and Memphis 33% in the first half. But he said the team continues to strive for the postseason despite the injury. "I wouldn't say it's flipping the switch," Morant said. He was 12 of 15 in the final two quarters. He had made only three of his 14 attempts in the first half. "I was just feeling it," Morant said.
