So, yeah, a lot of Syracuse basketball fans want the team to do away with the zone defense. More often than not, Syracuse basketball struggles to hold its own on the glass, and the zone can certainly be a big reason why. But Pittsburgh cleaned up on the offensive boards, and that gave it lots of second opportunities to score, whether in the interior or on the perimeter. And as I interact with fans on social media, my sense is that more and more of them are ready for the team to ditch the zone in favor of a man-to-man defense. The squad went 30-10 and 28-6, respectively, in 2012-13 and 2013-14. For me, I’m on the fence. That is unacceptable. We live in an era in Division I men’s basketball (and in the pros) where teams have lots of players who can shoot well from beyond the arc, and if the zone struggles to effectively defend the perimeter, and contain the glass, that results in blowout defeats. So, understandably, some Orange fans want to see Boeheim retire. I get that the affairs with the Tigers and the Panthers were on the road, but the ‘Cuse allowed a combined 190 points in those two games. A lot of Syracuse basketball fans, these days, are angry, disappointed and frustrated with the state of the Orange program.

With a downtown shooting clip sitting at 36.5%, which is good for fourth in the conference, it will be critical for Syracuse to make Georgia Tech pay by knocking down wide-open three’s to put the Yellow Jackets out of their misery. On paper, this is a roster that struggles offensively as they rank near the bottom of most statistical categories within the ACC, so playing some suffocating defense resulting in some points off of turnovers will be critical for their chances to cover. Nevertheless, the defense has gotten worse as of late as they have allowed their competition to score at least 90 points in their previous pair of outings. Alas, this bodes extremely well for Georgia Tech in the coming weeks as they have finally figured out the missing ingredient which results in winning games consistently. While their chances to make the big dance remain slightly better than the Yellow Jackets at the moment, the room for error is little to none from here on out. Regardless, the Yellow Jackets are fresh off of a sixteen-point victory at home versus Louisville and would surely love to continue their winning momentum into this evening.
