Patrick Kane has spent his entire career with the Blackhawks, but now will help the Rangers' chase for a Stanley Cup, which could be his fourth.

1 overall by the Blackhawks in 2007 and won Stanley Cups in 2010, 2013 and 2015. He has been named to the All-Star Game nine times. After those moves, the Blackhawks made Kane a healthy scratch and sent him home. Now, Kane will get to reunite with former Blackhawks linemate Artemi Panarin. The second-round pick can become a first (in either 2024 or 2025) if the Rangers reach the conference final, reports say. The Rangers are sending a 2023 conditional second-round pick and a fourth-round pick to Chicago in the deal.

He leaves the organization ranked third in games (1,161), third in goals (446), second in assists (779) and second in points (1,225). In Kane waiting to make a decision as long as he did and then leaving the Blackhawks only with one team to negotiate with, Davidson lost his leverage. He was in a corner, and the Rangers knew that, too. And the last time he played alongside Panarin, he was the league MVP. Determined to go out strong, Kane reminded everyone how good he can be — he posted 92 points with a career-high-tying 66 assists last season, after all — by going on an absolute tear with seven goals and three assists in his last four games as a Blackhawk. Kane’s game isn’t predicated on speed or strength, but rather on shiftiness, creativity and some of the best vision of his generation. Now the Rangers have 22 games left in the regular season to figure out where Kane best fits, how to distribute power-play time among their stars and whether this move is the one that can put the Rangers in position to emerge from a packed Eastern Conference. The trade that everyone knew was coming has finally happened and Kane will make his Rangers debut in Philadelphia on Wednesday. At 34 years old, Kane has spent most of this season mired in the worst campaign of his career. The Rangers had ample chances to accrue extra cap space throughout the season, but never anticipated adding both Kane and high-scoring winger Vladimir Tarasenko. There are still concerns about a suspected hip injury, but the risk is much more palatable given the discounted price tag. Chicago's initial asking price was considered too high, but Kane's Blueshirts-or-bust mantra shifted the leverage to Drury. It wasn't the Cups or the highlights or the records that made Kane a singular Blackhawk. It was the way he made you feel as a hockey fan.

Patrick Kane made me love and hate the Blackhawks (Deadspin)

The star winger is reportedly headed to the New York Rangers in return for a 2023 conditional second pick and a 2023 fourth-round pick.

Kane was as big of a reason as anyone that the Hawks, unknown and unloved in Chicago before, suddenly became the biggest party in town and the biggest story in hockey, and one of the biggest in sports. What I do know, and what I knew then, was that if ever there was an athlete who didn’t deserve any benefit of the doubt, it was Kane. But he certainly was nothing less than the symbol, the center. And it was handled as if it was just kind of adorable, accepted as what would happen if any teenager was allowed access to the entire scope of the Chicago nightlife as Kane was. As the Hawks became relevant and then preeminent, Kane was usually leading the charge. But those in the know will tell you it was the game before, in Vancouver, when he put all four Canucks skaters and Roberto Luongo into a trance so heavy they never saw Dave Bolland completely naked on the other side with an open net to score the winner: And the stories from outside the United Center continued to pour in, a lot of them documented on these very pages. It was all on message boards and other dark corners of the internet or word of mouth. It’s hilarious now to think that [James van Riemsdyk](https://www.nhl.com/player/james-van-riemsdyk-8474037) and [Kyle Turris](https://www.nhl.com/player/kyle-turris-8474068) were seriously considered worthy of the top selection by some, but that’s how it was then. Even at that age, it was clear that Kane possessed something that only a precious few get, that ability to simply bend the game to their whims. Even in his first game in the NHL, in Minnesota when neither he nor any other Hawk scored, he was still putting everyone else on half-speed while he weighed up his options. That was the first thing anyone noticed about Patrick Kane before the Hawks made him the No.

The Blackhawks have agreed to trade Patrick Kane to the Rangers for a conditional 2023 second-round draft pick and a fourth-rounder, sources told ESPN.

Kane has been receiving treatment for a hip injury this year, which is one of the reasons the Rangers initially hit pause on acquiring the veteran, sources told ESPN. And last season, as the rebuild was just beginning to take shape in Chicago, he still managed 26 goals and 92 points. "It's not, like, the happiest I've been to hear about a trade," Kane told reporters shortly after. NHL trade grades: Does Patrick Kane put the Rangers over the top? (The Athletic)

The return is underwhelming for Chicago, but its options were limited by Kane's no-movement clause.

The story is that Kane is where he wants to be and is ready to prove anyone who doubted him wrong. The return isn’t the story here — though it is nice for the Rangers that they didn’t have to pay much here to get their guy. The Rangers and Kane had all the leverage, so it’s hard to fault Chicago here too much, but the Blackhawks still let Kane go for an obviously underwhelming package. His expected goals rate has fallen way down to an ugly 37 percent and the Blackhawks have just 41 percent of the actual goals to show for it. Kane on an elite team is very different from Kane on one of the league’s worst. The questions about his defense are very real, but on this team — with this supporting cast and this goaltending — they’re less of an issue. It only emphasizes why they should have pushed for better returns on other trade pieces over the last year instead of over-relying on this duo to bring back the perfect returns that could facilitate their rebuild. The player wanted a certain team, and the Blackhawks had to either find a way to make it happen or not trade him at all. Already, on that struggling Blackhawks team, over his last stretch of play, he proved that he still has gas left in the tank. There’s truth to some of that, but a lot of it is exaggerated — a disservice to the talent Kane still brings to the ice. The key difference here, however, is that they’re not looking for them to be the game-breaker of their prime like other moves that fit this pattern. If we set aside the off-ice issues surrounding the player, the hip injury is a concern, that his offense has wilted is another, as are his defensive lapses.

At least Chicago fans can root for Kane and the Blackhawks in the playoffs in hopes that the conditional second-round pick becomes a first-round pick. As a team that often flirts with the salary cap floor, the Coyotes need to make these types of moves as they try to climb out of the NHL's basement. The Blackhawks gave up a legendary player for the type of return commanded by a middle-six forward. Kane had a full no-movement clause, and that benefited the Rangers in a major way. The bottom line is that the Rangers got another excellent offensive playmaker for a bargain bin price. At some point, this trade became more about doing Kane a favor and giving him a chance to win another Cup than anything else. Kane's best days may be behind him, but it's hard to believe he won't improve on a Rangers team that now boasts one of the best top-six forward groups in the league. If Rangers head coach Gerard Gallant puts Kane and Panarin back together, that could be the spark that ignites Kane again. In exchange for retaining 25% of Kane's cap hit, the Coyotes got a 2025 third-round pick from the Rangers. Despite being placed in a less-than-ideal situation, Kane has still produced 16 goals and 29 assists in 54 games. If the Rangers win two playoff rounds this year, the conditional second-round pick becomes a first-round pick in 2024 or 2025. At 34 years old, Kane probably isn't that player anymore, but rumors of his demise may be at least a little exaggerated.

"Definitely expectations are raised, but I think we've always had – especially after last year – high expectations on ourselves," Schneider said. "His numbers and his game speaks for itself. And there are serious doubts about the availability of defenseman Ryan Lindgren, who is still recovering from an upper-body injury. But the excitement from his acquisition was palpable among the players who made the trip to Philly. Every time I woke up in the morning, it was the first thing that I was watching. "He's one of the best to ever play," said 21-year-old defenseman Braden Schneider.

Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews — apart now and together forever (Chicago Sun-Times)

With the Blackhawks trading Kane to the Rangers, an era ends in Chicago but the memories won't.

He punched a cab driver in Buffalo in 2009, then was accused of rape in a messy 2015 case that led to no charges being filed against him. Sometimes Toews and Kane played on the same line, and sometimes they didn’t. Beach’s teammates said they didn’t know about the abuse, but the taint has covered everyone in the organization. Toews was the third overall pick in the 2006 NHL draft, and Kane the top overall pick the following year, when each made their debut with the Hawks. He was relentless, and he was strong. If it is, it’s for the death of imagination. They were inseparable almost from the start, in part because former team president John McDonough often pushed them out into the community to spread the gospel of Hawks hockey. It was always Kane and Toews, unless it was Toews and Kane. Toews, the team captain at 20, and Kane, the eternal Boy Wonder. For most of the past 16 seasons, Chicago has only known an existence that involved Toews and Kane. Kane was every opponent’s nightmare, a shell game of a player who could embarrass defenders at any moment. Toews probably will be gone in the not-too-distant future, whether that’s because of his health or because he decides he’s finally willing to play somewhere else as the Hawks’ rebuild continues.
