Gavin Lux injury: Dodgers shortstop suffers season-ending torn ACL ... (CBS sports.com)

Lux was expected to reclaim his shortstop position for the 2023 season.

Lux, a first-round pick out of high school by the Dodgers in 2016, spent most of his time in the minors at shortstop and was at one time considered a top-five prospect in all of baseball. [Dodgers](https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/teams/LAD/los-angeles-dodgers/) shortstop [Gavin Lux](/mlb/players/2250605/gavin-lux/) suffered a torn ACL and LCL in his right knee Monday afternoon in Arizona, manager Dave Roberts announced Tuesday ( [per MLB.com](https://twitter.com/juanctoribio/status/1630613950797840384)). Turner also signed elsewhere this past offseason, so the coast is clear for Lux, assuming this injury doesn't wipe out his entire season. I'm just hoping for the best." "It's a tough one. Gavin Lux Will Miss 2023 Season Due To Torn ACL (MLB Trade Rumors)

Dodgers shortstop Gavin Lux suffered a torn ACL and damaged LCL and will miss the 2023 season as a result. Read more at MLB Trade Rumors.

The Dodgers are no strangers to making small-scale trades and adding depth via waivers, of course, and this injury gives them the freedom to accommodate a new acquisition on the 40-man roster by shifting Lux to the 60-day injured list. Roberts added that Swiss army knife [Chris Taylor](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/t/tayloch03.shtml) could get some reps in the infield as well, and [Mookie Betts](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/bettsmo01.shtml) could see some extra work at second base for the Dodgers, too ( [Twitter link](https://twitter.com/Jack_A_Harris/status/1630616539945930753) via [Jack Harris](https://www.baseball-reference.com/search/search.fcgi?pid=harris010jac,harris009jac,harris004jac&search=Jack+Harris&utm_medium=linker&utm_source=www.mlbtraderumors.com&utm_campaign=2023-02-28_br) of the L.A. The outfield depth is also impacted, as any time Taylor spends in the infield cuts into his availability elsewhere on the diamond. [Miguel Vargas](https://www.baseball-reference.com/search/search.fcgi?pid=vargami01,vargas007mig,vargas006mig&search=Miguel+Vargas&utm_medium=linker&utm_source=www.mlbtraderumors.com&utm_campaign=2023-02-28_br) also dealing with a [hairline fracture in his pinkie finger](https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2023/02/injury-notes-whitlock-ahmed-vargas-reynolds.html). [Gavin Lux](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/luxga01.shtml) suffered a torn ACL in his right knee during yesterday’s Cactus League game and will miss the 2023 season ( [Twitter thread](https://twitter.com/juanctoribio/status/1630613950797840384) via Juan Toribio of MLB.com). While he did post a much more solid .277/.334/.398 line from 2019-21 (1208 plate appearances), Rojas just turned 34 and has seen his quality of contact degrade considerably over the past couple seasons. He’ll spend the year on the injured list, gaining Major League service time along the way and inching closer to free agency at the conclusion of the 2026 season. However, while he doesn’t have the offensive upside of Lux, Rojas should provide the Dodgers with lights-out glovework at the position. However, while advancing from second to third base on a grounder in yesterday’s game, Lux altered his course a bit to avoid a throw across the diamond. That was solid production — 13% better than average, per wRC+ — but it also bears mentioning that a woeful cold streak in September and October weighed down Lux’s end-of-season numbers. Rojas, who’s spent the past half decade as the Marlins’ primary shortstop (after being traded from the Dodgers to Miami), is a light hitter but grades out as one of the best defensive shortstops in the game. He’d been ticketed for a utility role but will now step up as the everyday shortstop in Lux’s absence.

Dodgers' Gavin Lux to miss 2023 season with torn right ACL (ESPN)

Dodgers infielder Gavin Lux will miss the 2023 season with a torn ACL in his right knee.

Lux, 25, is in his fifth year with the Dodgers after being drafted by Los Angeles in 2016. "He's a big part of this club," Rojas told reporters. "I kind of rolled up on my ankle, too. "I think every baseball player's dream is to play shortstop for the Los Angeles Dodgers." He said he felt something pop and his leg went numb. Lux suffered the injury and was carted off the field Monday after running between second and third base during Los Angeles' spring game against San Diego.

Dodgers' Gavin Lux expected to miss season with torn ACL (Los Angeles Times)

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts confirms that shortstop Gavin Lux has a torn ACL in his right knee and is expected to miss the 2023 season.

“I felt it kind of pop right away, and the outside of my leg kind of went numb,” Lux said. Playing second base last year, he impressed with a .276 batting average and power numbers that improved as the season went on. “It cuts into [our depth],” he said. [Gavin Lux](https://www.latimes.com/sports/dodgers/story/2023-02-28/dodgers-gavin-lux-knee-acl-injury-trade-free-agents) suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and it is expected to keep him out for the season, manager [Dave Roberts](https://www.latimes.com/sports/dodgers/story/2023-02-18/dave-roberts-positive-minded-outlook-season) announced Tuesday morning. His bat, however, has been in decline over the last couple of seasons, including a .236 average last year while he was hampered by right hand and wrist problems. “But we’ve got veteran guys that can take the reins. He had two surgeries in the offseason. Roberts said Lux’s recovery will take eight months and called it “a huge blow.” “It’s heartbreaking, you know,” Lux said, fighting back tears while leaning on crutches at the team’s Camelback Ranch spring-training facility. As a result, fellow outfielders David Peralta, Trayce Thompson and Jason Heyward could be forced into more regular playing time than anticipated. It will be performed by the team’s head physician, Dr.Neal ElAttrache. [The Dodgers](https://www.latimes.com/sports/dodgers) are in need of a new shortstop.

Dodgers suffer a big blow, losing starting SS Gavin Lux for the ... (USA TODAY)

Lux was set to be LA's everyday shortstop in 2023 after the Dodgers let Trea Turner go as a free agent in the offseason.

Now, Rojas will start a significant amount of games, but the downstream effect on the entire roster could be significant. Rojas was acquired in trade from the Miami Marlins and anticipated to fill a utility role. Turner's departure came one year after he was acquired in a July 2021 trade and paired up the middle with shortstop Corey Seager, who left after that year for a 10-year, $325 million pact with the Texas Rangers. Lux helped off the field and onto a cart by manager Dave Roberts. Now, a crucial part of that formula will miss the entire 2023 season. The club announced Tuesday he will undergo reconstructive surgery on March 7.

This probably makes more sense closer to the deadline. Profar wouldn’t be the cheapest option. Any player in this category probably wouldn’t see regular at-bats with the Dodgers. The Dodgers’ lineup likely would take a hit. But it’s already starting to look shaky. Their last position player spot likely would come down to Yonny Hernández or Luke Williams (infielders acquired after they were designated for assignment this offseason), Michael Busch or James Outman (highly touted prospects but with question marks), or Bradley Zimmer or Steven Duggar (veteran outfielders in camp on minor league contracts). The Dodgers would be without an established backup infielder. A Phoenix native, he originally interned at The Times before joining the staff in 2019. Before that, he covered the Angels, the Kings and almost everything else the L.A. Rojas can playshortstop, where he is strong defensively but might struggle at bat.
