Parts of central and upstate New York could see 2-5 inches of snow and up to a quarter inch of ice. The period between snow events is also likely to increase as the climate warms, and it may be especially true for coastal Northeastern cities. The highest snow amounts are expected across interior portions of New York, Connecticut and into the Berkshire mountains in Massachusetts, where up to a foot of fresh powder is possible. Boston has seen less than a third of its normal snowfall this winter, about 10 inches total compared to a normal of 3 feet, Miller said. New York City has only received 0.4” of snow so far this winter (since Dec 1), about 2 feet under their average,” CNN meteorologist Brandon Miller said. It could easily be New York’s biggest snow event of a nearly snowless season.

NYC winter storm: Forecaster details updated snow prediction for ... (silive.com)

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The storm that blanketed parts of southern California with snow has made its way across the country to Staten Island.

The collision of the storm system and the pressurized cold air that is lingering in the north are just the exact ingredients needed for the coldness that allows snow to form, the weatherman explicated. That western storm system is colliding with some high-pressurized cold air that is situated in the northern regions of New York and the Northeast, DePodwin explained. “We are forecasting this storm to surpass that total with a couple inches of snow in New York City itself.” This will cause issues with road slickness for New Yorkers’ Tuesday morning commutes; it is advised that commuters allot for extra time in their travels. “What we are looking at, at this point is one to maybe three inches of snow in Staten Island, Manhattan and Brooklyn.” “It is going to be a pretty tight gradient from north to south in terms of where the heaviest snow sets up at this point.”

It's too early to predict how much snow we might see from that system, but accumulation is more likely north and west of the city. This system is a bit more complicated for those in northwest New Jersey, the Hudson Valley and Connecticut. We're looking at a warming trend ahead of the upcoming weather system, with temperatures expected to climb back near 60 degrees on Thursday before highs plunge by double digits once again Friday. For now, it appears the storm may start out as snow (yes, even in NYC) but it will likely warm up and make the change to rain for the city and spots south. commute, around 5 or 6 p.m., with the worst weather coming during the evening and into the overnight hours.
