It’s a given that they’ll be there, and it’s a given that they’ll be a tough out. This Monday night, it’s the team that almost certainly wishes he still played for them. With the Portland Trail Blazers, Los Angeles Lakers, and Oklahoma City Thunder nipping at their heels for the final play-in spot, how much farther can they afford to slip? He also made the team’s final two free throws in a tight spot, no small feat for a player shooting 75 percent from the line. Julius Randle and Immanuel Quickley each scored 23 points to lead the Knicks, who jumped the Nets with this win and now own the fifth seed in the Eastern Conference. Significant flash from Paolo Banchero to close the game tonight. The Knicks also held Jayson Tatum to a six-for-18 night from the field before he was ejected for the first time in his career. Just in the last few days, the NBA has been the offense-heavy league where defense has gone to die, with the And just like that, the Celtics have been unseated as the league’s top team. Boston Celtics suffer horrendous loss vs NY Knicks: Key takeaways (Chowder and Champions)

The Boston Celtics lost to the New York Knicks after a horrendous shooting night. Celtics went 9/42 in three-point shooting. Jayson Tatum got ejected.

Tatum also had to be ejected late in the 4th quarter after getting two technical fouls. Brogdon and Smart were the only other ones that had 2 three-pointers on the night. The Celtics had the best three-point percentage in the league after the all-star break, but they were off for this game. Al Horford started the game with a three, but the Celtics would miss 17 straight three-pointers in the 1st Half. He only had one free throw attempt and made that one. 6 takeaways as cold-shooting Celtics fall to Knicks, drop to second ... (Boston.com)

Here are the takeaways as the cold-shooting Celtics fell to the Knicks on Monday, falling to second in the East by percentage points.

We want to make a run in the playoffs,” Hart said. For the first time in months, the Celtics are not the No. His confident drives to the basket gave the Celtics some badly needed offense in the first half, and he buried a pair of triples in the second as the Celtics tried to rally. The second technical came in the fourth, after Tatum missed a 3-pointer. “I thought we moved it, I thought we got the shots we wanted. The Celtics shot an unsustainably bad percentage from 3-point range and were without one of their two All-Stars, but the Knicks are a much tougher team than they have been even earlier this year. “I haven’t been home in two weeks,” Tatum said. “That would have been scary if I didn’t hold on to the rim. The first technical came after a big dunk in the third quarter. “That one was tough because they literally glided me to the rim, two hands in my back,” Tatum said. That’s a good defensive team, especially in the half-court, but I thought we got the shots we wanted. That narrowly edged their loss to the Clippers in December (9-for-39, 21.3 percent) and their two losses to the Magic, also in December (11-for-46, 23.9 percent and 12-for-47, 25.5 percent).

And it’s imperative that the Celtics make the most of the home games. And the After that marathon run in that weird game in Milwaukee, Muscala was inactive for the final game before the All-Star break. Then he was a DNP-CD in the first two games out of the break. The Celtics defense is very good, so we’ll chalk this up to an off night on that end of the floor too. He’s shot 36.7% from the floor and just 24.1% from behind the arc in the three games since the break. It’s not all that different from the three-game stretch in mid-November where Tatum shot even worse from the field. On the nights when the effort is bad, the opponent gets a lot of open and wide-open shots. The Celtics didn’t lose because of the refs. That sees Boston without the NBA’s best record and in second place in the conference for the first time since the fall. If anything, the numbers seem to point in the other direction. From the jump, New York was focused on getting in the lane to create scoring opportunities.

Jayson Tatum ejected in ugly Celtics loss to Knicks: 'I just told him ... (CelticsBlog)

The Celtics MVP candidate was tossed amidst his third rough shooting night in a row.

Boston shot a combined 9-of-42 (21.4%) from beyond the three-point arc - their worst shooting performance of the season. However, Tatum’s slump and Brown’s absence proved to be too much to overcome in Madison Square Garden on Monday. As the shots continued to miss, frustration quickly became apparent. Against the 76ers, they were able to do that, but with Jaylen Brown sidelined against the Knicks for personal reasons, there was even more pressure on Boston’s role players. Through the season, you’re going to have an off game here and there, and that’s just a part of it.” And in the Celtics’ loss to the [New York Knicks](https://www.postingandtoasting.com/) on Monday night, shooting woes and a distaste for the game’s officiating led to his first career ejection. There’s gonna be ups and downs, and he’s the last guy that I’m worried about. My biggest thing with him is making sure that he feels right and that he’s good to go in April once the playoffs start. The second one, I just told him, ‘this was probably the best officiated game I’ve been a part of.’ I tried to give him a compliment. With roughly four minutes remaining in the contest, Tatum took a three-pointer and thought he was fouled. Tatum’s frustrations with the officiating were compounded by a rough shooting night. “And those are the ones that are tough.

Why Celtics' Jayson Tatum's recent struggles don't worry Al Horford (masslive.com)

Jayson Tatum, even aside from ejection, had a forgettable game against the Knicks.

“My biggest thing with him is making sure that he feels right and that he’s good to go at any point once the playoffs start. But the Celtics are still Tatum’s team as the 24-year-old is the face of the franchise. [Massachusetts online sports betting](https://www.masslive.com/betting/massachusetts/)is coming soon. Just get back home, get some home-cooked meals and get ready for Wednesday.” It’s not the first time the four-time All-Star has gone through a slump, and he’s built up a track record of shaking off those cold stretches. While the C’s as a team failed to hit 3s, Tatum’s play was a black spot for a team looking to make a comeback. And even though he hit the game-winner against the Sixers, Tatum himself didn’t seem too concerned by the struggles. The 3-pointers seemingly refused to go down, partly why his frustrations boiled to the top as his sarcastic remark to a referee ended up in his ejection. “Jayson’s been playing, as we all know, at an MVP level for most of the season. He’s the last guy that I’m worried about.”

C's Finish Road Trip 2-1 After Off-Shooting Night in NYC (Celtics.com)

An uncharacteristic 3-point shooting performance by the Boston Celtics led to a frustrating loss in New York Monday night.

Only seven times in Celtics history has a reserve recorded 100-plus points and fewer than five turnovers over a five-game span without overlap, and Brogdon has now done it twice in the last two months alone. He’s the first Celtic reserve to average at least that many points over a five-game span since Isaiah Thomas in 2015. In three games since the All-Star break, he’s shot 36.7 percent from the field, including 24.1 percent from long range. It was also only one of six teams shooting at least 38 percent from deep on the season. The Celtics are 29-5 when hitting their average in total 3-point makes, and 24-0 when shooting at least 40 percent from deep. The C’s had been shooting brilliantly of late, making at least 41 percent of their long-range shots in seven of their previous eight outings.

The Celtics entered the playoffs dripping with swagger and screaming about how they weren’t going to run from anybody. The Celtics set a lofty standard early in the season, one they’ve struggled to maintain. Jaylen Brown has been able to play despite a facial fracture and Boston should have its preferred starting five available more often moving forward. Boston's offense ranks 16th in the NBA.

What If Celtics, 76ers Never Made 2017 NBA Draft Trade? (NESN.com)

Danny Ainge and the Celtics eyeing Jayson Tatum instead of other top prospects in the 2017 NBA Draft is a key decision in franchise history.

[two seasons in Philadelphia](https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/f/fultzma01.html) before he was traded to the Orlando Magic in Feb. He also was named the Eastern Conference finals MVP as he helped Boston to the 2021-22 NBA Finals and was named the MVP of the 2023 NBA All-Star Game after setting a scoring record. Ball has played for [three teams in his first five seasons](https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/b/balllo01.html), far from the ideal career path of a recent No. In his first six seasons in the league, Tatum has been named an NBA All-Star four times and was selected to two All-NBA teams. What Langford later became for the Celtics, however, remains notable. The Celtics can point directly to the 2017 NBA Draft for where they gained that level of separation. Admittedly, Langford was an afterthought during his two-plus seasons in green, though that was in large part because he was behind wings like Jaylen Brown and Tatum. Similarly, Ball lasted an identical two seasons in LA before he was traded to the New Orleans Pelicans in a deal that netted the Lakers star center Anthony Davis. Ainge remaining steadfast on drafting Tatum when others in league circles and analysts felt Fultz was well-deserving of the top selection, and it proved to be one of the biggest decisions of Ainge’s tenure in Boston. The rest, fortunately for the Celtics, is history. The 76ers sent the No. At the time of Embiid’s admission in October 2018, it was an admirable big-picture outlook from the usually outspoken big man.

Four encouraging late-season trends for the Celtics (NBC Sports Boston)

After spending much of the past three months atop the NBA, the Celtics slipped to second in the Eastern Conference with Monday's loss in New York.

That’s nearly 80 percent of Boston’s first 59 games without at least one starter on the court. Remember, the Cavaliers could be a second-round matchup for Boston depending on how the seedings shake out. Wednesday’s visit from the Cleveland Cavaliers should provide another glimpse of that group. White, despite his own bumps, bruises, cuts, and busted eardrum, is still the only Celtics player to appear in every game this season. Despite some encouraging moments, particularly when they are moving the ball on offense, the preferred 5 have struggled in their reunion. White, who earned a much-deserved Player of the Week nod earlier this month, has been exceptional throughout the month of February. Despite some bumps in the road, the team is still on a 56-win pace and there are still positives to pluck as the team tries to find its mojo over the final stretch of the 2022-23 regular season. The next closest Celtic for the month of February is Sam Hauser at +70. The next closest regular is What’s more, Boston has outscored opponents by 24 in Tatum’s 34 minutes on the bench. Three of Brogdon's top five performances in Game Score, a John Hollinger-created metric that distills a player’s nightly stat line down to a single number based on box score production and efficiency, have come in that 11-game stretch.
