Warriors 3 Things: The Dubs' win over Minnesota showed why you ... (The Mercury News)

The Warriors will have to fight for everything in the season's final weeks. Sunday, we saw they might be up for those battles.

There’s a reason Klay Thompson hasn’t lost a playoff series in close to a decade: The dude is a gamer. Put a bit of fight into the equation and it’s hard to bet against the Dubs. But the Warriors’ last two games have been a wonderful reminder that there is a difference between great players and good players. Is this a model to win a title? 7 in the Western Conference with the seventh-best odds to win the NBA title. But the team’s effort deserves praise. We’re in the crunch time of the season. But in games like Sunday’s, where the Warriors are playing a Western Conference peer, sustainability does not matter. They found a way to win. They brought it, full bore, in the moments they needed it. Did the Warriors find a formula for sustained success Sunday? But Klay Thompson refused to lose, and Donte DiVincenzo and Kevon Looney helped him.

Ty Jerome, Anthony Lamb emerge as Warriors leaders in special way (NBC Sports Bay Area)

Both Ty Jerome and Anthony Lamb are defective defenders, but their effort and intent are never in question.

If that example is followed by all, the next 21 games won’t look so much like so many of the previous 61. Both are eligible to be converted to a standard contract, but there is only one available roster spot. “We’re going to take our threes and we’re going to push in transition, but we really locked in defensively in the fourth quarter. “But at home when the crowd gets behind us, we play with a little bit of extra juice. Lamb does a whole lot of stuff that people don’t recognize. “They’ve helped us win a lot of games this year. He’s a good passer, a good 3-point shooter.” “We’ve been trying to do that all year, but we’ve been struggling – especially on the road,” said Kevon Looney, who contributed 12 points and 17 rebounds. The kind of defense coach Steve Kerr has been pushing for since, well, November. “Lamb and Ty have been huge,” Kerr said. Effort matters. But once we pressured to make them go downhill and we didn’t foul, they couldn’t make those layups around the rim with two or three guys were trying to block it.

Warriors observations: Dubs' huge fourth keys big win vs ... (NBC Sports Bay Area)

Klay Thompson and Donte DiVincenzo caught fire in the fourth quarter, leading the Warriors to a big comeback win over the Timberwolves.

Though they gain spasms of athleticism, it’s a lot to overcome if the scoring difference is negligible. That’s a judgment thing, and that’s the No. Poole can’t seem to shake his tendency to launch ill-advised 30-footers early in the shot clock or even when the Warriors seem to be finding a measure of rhythm on offense. 1 priority of anyone filling the role of point guard. But the level of pluck was at max in the fourth quarter. On this night, it showed up.

Klay Thompson will be the key to the Warriors surviving this stretch of injuries to their biggest players.

4 [Suns](https://www.cbssports.com/nba/teams/PHO/phoenix-suns/), could find themselves right back in the middle of the championship hunt. He scored 11 of his 32 points on Sunday in the fourth quarter, and his 30-foot 3 and one-leg floater over the last 50 seconds of the first half marked a momentum surge that will be forgotten with the way this game ended. The Warriors have become pretty top-heavy, and for that to work as a championship formula, those top guys have to be awesome. They have the experience. The pedigree. When his sidekick is also in vintage form, which, again, he absolutely has been for an extended period now, that's when it feels like the dynasty is still alive. And somehow, it seems the same chip on their shoulder in moments of the highest competition. He finished with 32 points on Sunday, backing up the 42 he posted in a win over Houston on Friday, and is now averaging better than 26 points per game since Jan. But the leeway has been earned. If you've settled into the "Thompson isn't what he used to be" narrative, you'll be surprised to learn that he has been scorching hot for almost two months now. Steve Kerr drew up “Elevator” for Klay Thompson as Warriors beat ... (Golden State of Mind)

Steve Kerr drew up a Mark Jackson special to get his star shooting guard going.

Thompson curls the screen by DiVincenzo and the Wolves switch, not taking any chances with Thompson getting loose for a three or a backdoor cut. The Wolves jump out at the threat of a Thompson pull-up and commit two defenders to him — which leaves Kuminga wide open underneath the rim for the dunk. The Wolves remembered this during the fourth quarter and tried to top-lock Thompson away from any off-ball screening action followed by a handoff. That is followed by a handoff for a man running from the corner, which is emptied out by someone “45-cutting” (a cut at a 45-degree angle). That’s the famed “Elevator” screens Jackson was so fond of running for Curry back in the day, revived a decade later for Thompson. The Warriors outscored the Wolves by nine points during his 38 minutes on the floor, a team best.

Warriors pick up big win for seeding and confidence against ... (The Mercury News)

Draymond Green underwent additional testing Sunday after a knee injury sidelined him for a second straight game.

Thompson hit a 3 to pad the Warriors’ lead to six. “We have a tough schedule ahead of us and we don’t know when guys will be back and who is going to play each game but we just have to play our style and compete at the highest level and try and win these games. Thompson fed DiVincenzo who knocked down a 3 to put the Warriors’ up 102-99 with three minutes left. But with Thompson off the floor, the Timberwolves started to pull away. After pouring in 42 points in a needed win over the Houston Rockets on Friday, Thompson stepped up again Sunday. Minnesota was up 10 when Thompson checked in at the 8:17 mark. Three Golden State turnovers and a few defensive lapses made it a three-point game and gave Timberwolves hope, but the Warriors managed to do just enough to hold on. DiVincenzo tied it at 96 with a reverse layup. The 31-30 Warriors are in sole possession of seventh place, while the 31-32 Timberwolves dropped to ninth. “This is a huge win, not only for the standings but for the confidence of the guys,” coach Steve Kerr said. Everything was looking good and he had a setback today so we’ll learn more today and we’ll have more tomorrow.” Andrew Wiggins, known for his durability, has now missed four straight games due to a family matter.

After Klay Thompson and Donte DiVincenzo helped lead the Warriors to a comeback over the Timberwolves, NBA Twitter exploded with reactions.

Warriors beat the Rockets and Timberwolves without Curry/Wiggins/Draymond. After starting 7-for-9 they went 10-for-36. Regression to the mean for Minnesota. Donte DiVincenzo (21/8/5) is a hell of a player. The only disappointment for me was Jordan Poole – had a couple of nice steals but he's gotta shoot better than 25% FG & 12.5% three. Post Achilles tear. Post ACL tear. [February 27, 2023] Looney notched 12 points to go along with a game-high 17 rebounds in 32 minutes. DiVincenzo added 21 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the floor with eight rebounds and five assists in 38 minutes. A knee problem for Draymond Green is the latest concern for a Golden State Warriors team already battling injury issues late in the season.

Golden State have already been absent two-time MVP Stephen Curry for the last eight games, with the superstar point-guard hopeful of a return at some point in the next fortnight. The Warriors can’t afford the same absence this season as they battle to simply make the postseason with a current 31-30 record.
